Conformal constraints on defects

Abstract

Abstract In this paper we study the constraints imposed by conformal invariance on extended objects a.k.a. defects in a conformal field theory. We identify a particularly nice class of defects that is closed under conformal transformations. Correlation function of the defect with a bulk local operator is fixed by conformal invariance up to an overall constant. This gives rise to the notion of defect expansion, where the defect itself is expanded in terms of local operators. This expansion generalizes the idea of the boundary state. We will show how one can fix the correlation function of two defects from the knowledge of the defect expansion. The defect correlator admits a number of conformal cross-ratios depending on their dimensionality. We find the differential equation obeyed by the conformal block and solve them in certain special cases.

Cusped Defects: Cusp Operator Expansion, Conformal Properties and Bootstrap Applications

Lorenzo Bianchi, Andrea Cavaglià, A. David Gutiérrez +2 more

We analyze general properties of cusped defect lines embedded in generic conformal field theories (CFTs). We prove that suitably defined cusp scaling operators transform like primary operators under general conformal transformations. We show that, via the cusp operator expansion (COE), defects of general shape can be expanded in a basis of cusped defects. These findings are checked and exemplified in the case of the localized magnetic field defect. Finally, we derive analytic constraints on dynamical cusp data by making use of a crossing equation, and discuss possible numerical bootstrap applications of our results.

Method of images in defect conformal field theories

Tatsuma Nishioka, Yoshitaka Okuyama, Soichiro Shimamori

We propose a prescription for describing correlation functions in higher-dimensional defect conformal field theories (DCFTs) by those in ancillary conformal field theories (CFTs) without defects, which is a vast generalization of the image method in two-dimensional boundary CFTs. A correlation function of $n$ operators inserted away from a defect in a DCFT is represented by a correlation function of $2n$ operators in the ancillary CFT, each pair of which is placed symmetrically with respect to the defect. We establish the correspondence by matching the constraints on correlation functions imposed by conformal symmetry on both sides. Our method has the potential to shed light on new aspects of DCFTs from the viewpoint of conventional CFTs.

Conformal defects of general dimensions at finite temperature

Yucheng Li, Haruki Nakayama, 辰磨 西岡

We consider defect conformal field theories (DCFTs) at finite temperature, where a $p$-dimensional conformal defect wraps the thermal circle. Extending the previous study of line defects to defects of general dimensions, we determine the general forms of the thermal one-point functions of bulk scalars, conserved currents and the stress tensor by imposing the residual symmetry and the conservation laws. The low temperature expansion of the thermal one-point functions is shown to be reproduced by the bulk-defect operator expansion, allowing us to read off the thermal one-point coefficients of defect operators. We examine the general results in four classes of examples with free bulk theories: the trivial defect, free scalar and fermion theories with a boundary, the free scalar theory with a localized $ϕ$ deformation in $d=2\,p+2$ dimensions and the free $\mathrm{O}(N)$ model with a localized $ϕ^2$ deformation in $d=p+2-ε$ dimensions. In the last example with $ε= 1$, where the defect becomes an interface, we find that the thermal one-point functions coincide with those of the free scalar theory with the Dirichlet boundary condition, in accordance with the conjectured factorization of an interface CFT into two decoupled boundary CFTs.

Subdimensional disorder and logarithmic defect

Soichiro Shimamori, Yifan Wang

A bstract We study quenched disorder localized on a p -dimensional subspacetime in a d -dimensional conformal field theory. Motivated by the logarithmic behavior often associated with disorder, we introduce a defect setup in which bulk local operators transform in ordinary conformal representations, while defect local operators assemble into logarithmic multiplets. We refer to such objects as logarithmic defects and investigate their model-independent properties dictated solely by conformal symmetry and its representation theory, including correlation functions, logarithmic defect operator expansions, and conformal blocks. As a concrete example, we analyze the free scalar theory with a generalized pinning defect subject to random coupling fluctuations, and we identify a half-line of fixed points describing the corresponding logarithmic conformal defects. Along the way, we propose a candidate monotone governing defect renormalization group flows induced by subdimensional disorder, and demonstrate its consistency with such flows in the free theory across various dimensions. We further comment on generalizations and outline a broader program for bootstrapping logarithmic defects.

Calogero-Sutherland approach to defect blocks

Mikhail Isachenkov, Pedro Liendo, Yannick Linke +1 more

Abstract Extended objects such as line or surface operators, interfaces or boundaries play an important role in conformal field theory. Here we propose a systematic approach to the relevant conformal blocks which are argued to coincide with the wave functions of an integrable multi-particle Calogero-Sutherland problem. This generalizes a recent observation in [1] and makes extensive mathematical results from the modern theory of multi-variable hypergeometric functions available for studies of conformal defects. Applications range from several new relations with scalar four-point blocks to a Euclidean inversion formula for defect correlators.

Radial coordinates for defect CFTs

Edoardo Lauria, Marco Meineri, Emilio Trevisani

Abstract We study the two-point function of local operators in the presence of a defect in a generic conformal field theory. We define two pairs of cross ratios, which are convenient in the analysis of the OPE in the bulk and defect channel respectively. The new coordinates have a simple geometric interpretation, which can be exploited to efficiently compute conformal blocks in a power expansion. We illustrate this fact in the case of scalar external operators. We also elucidate the convergence properties of the bulk and defect OPE decompositions of the two-point function. In particular, we remark that the expansion of the two-point function in powers of the new cross ratios converges everywhere, a property not shared by the cross ratios customarily used in defect CFT. We comment on the crucial relevance of this fact for the numerical bootstrap.
