Abstract

We consider a quasi-one-dimensional two-component Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a coherent coupling between its components, such as realized in spin-orbit coupled condensates. We study how nonlinearity modifies the dynamics of the elementary excitations. The spectrum has two branches, which are affected in different ways. The upper branch experiences a modulational instability, which is stabilized by a long-wave--short-wave resonance with the lower branch. The lower branch is stable. In the limit of weak nonlinearity and small dispersion it is described by a Korteweg--de Vries equation or by the Gardner equation, depending on the value of the parameters of the system.

Nonlinear waves of polarization in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

A. M. Kamchatnov, Yaroslav V. Kartashov, Pierre-Élie Larré +1 more

Waves with different symmetries exist in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) whose dynamics is described by a system of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations. A first type of waves corresponds to excitations for which the motion of both components is locally in phase. In the second type of waves the two components have a counter-phase local motion. In the case of different values of inter- and intra-component interaction constants, the long wave-length behavior of these two modes corresponds to two types of sound with different velocities. In the limit of weak nonlinearity and small dispersion the first mode is described by the well-known Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. We show that in the same limit the second mode can be described by the Gardner (modified KdV) equation, if the intra-component interaction constants have close enough values. This leads to a rich phenomenology of nonlinear excitations (solitons, kinks, algebraic solitons, breathers) which does not exist in the KdV description.

Weak nonlinear matter waves in a trapped two-component Bose–Einstein condensates

Yong Wen-Mei, Ju-Kui Xue

The dynamics of the weak nonlinear matter solitary waves in two-component Bose–Einstein condensates (BEC) with cigar-shaped external potential are investigated analytically by a perturbation method. In the small amplitude limit, the two-components can be decoupled and the dynamics of solitary waves are governed by a variable-coefficient Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation. The reduction to the KdV equation may be useful to understand the dynamics of nonlinear matter waves in two-component BEC. The analytical expressions for the evolution of soliton, emitted radiation profiles and soliton oscillation frequency are also obtained.

Modulational instability of nonlinear spin waves in an atomic chain of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Xing-Dong Zhao, Zhengwei Xie, Weiping Zhang

The modulational instability of coherently excited spin waves is studied in an atomic spin chain of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) confined in an optical lattice. We examine the dependence of the stability on the long-range nonlinear interaction of spin waves excited at different lattice sites. The long-range nonlinear spin coupling in the optical lattice is due to light-induced and static magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between atoms. We compare the spin wave dynamics in an atomic spin chain of spinor BECs formed in an optical lattice with that in a Heisenberg-like spin chain in solid-state physics. This reveals the important differences of the spin chain with long-range spin coupling from that with the short-range one.

Localized nonlinear waves and dynamical stability in spinor Bose–Einstein condensates with time–space modulation

Yuqin Yao, Wei Han, Ji Li +1 more

Abstract Nonlinearity is one of the most remarkable characteristics of Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs). Much work has been done on one- and two-component BECs with time- or space-modulated nonlinearities, while there is little work on spinor BECs with space–time-modulated nonlinearities. In the present paper we investigate localized nonlinear waves and dynamical stability in spinor Bose–Einstein condensates with nonlinearities dependent on time and space. We solve the three coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations by similarity transformation and obtain two families of exact matter wave solutions in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions and the Mathieu equation. The localized states of the spinor matter wave describe the dynamics of vector breathing solitons, moving breathing solitons, quasi-breathing solitons and resonant solitons. The results show that one-order vector breathing solitons, quasi-breathing solitons, resonant solitons and the moving breathing solitons ψ ±1 are all stable, but the moving breathing soliton ψ 0 is unstable. We also present the experimental parameters to realize these phenomena in future experiments.

Modulation instability associated nonlinear dynamics of spin–orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates *

Thudiyangal Mithun, Kenichi Kasamatsu

Abstract We study pattern-forming nonlinear dynamics starting from a continuous wave state of quasi-one-dimensional two-component Bose–Einstein condensates with synthetic spin–orbit coupling induced by Raman lasers. Modulation instability (MI) can occur even when the miscibility condition due to the interatomic interactions is satisfied. We find that the initial stage of the nonlinear development is consistent with the prediction of MI, where the two primary and secondary instability bands lead to the spontaneous growth of the modulation and the subsequent complicated dynamics of pattern formation. At later stages of the evolution, the wave functions undergo clear separation in the momentum space, reflected in the dispersion of the single particle Hamiltonian.

Modulational instability of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice

Guangri Jin, Chul Koo Kim, Kyun Nahm

We study modulational instability of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice, which is modeled as a coupled discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger (DNLS) equation. The excitation spectrum and the modulational instability condition of the total system are presented analytically. In the long-wavelength limit, our results agree with the homogeneous two-component Bose-Einstein condensates case. The discreteness effects result in the appearance of the modulational instability for the condensates in miscible region. The numerical calculations confirm our analytical results and show that the interspecies coupling can transfer the instability from one component to another.
