Abstract

We derive a model of quantum-classical hybrids for a simplified model of quantum electrodynamics in the framework of the stochastic variational method. In this model, charged particle trajectories are affected by the interaction with quantized electromagnetic fields, and this quantum-classical interaction induces a displacement current. We further investigate a geometric phase in the wave functional of the gauge field configuration, which is induced by adiabatic motions of the charged particles. This phase contains the quantum-classical backreaction effect and usual Berry's phase is reproduced in the vanishing limit of the fluctuation of the charged particle trajectories.

Gauge invariance of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in a quantum electrodynamics framework

Pablo L. Saldanha

The gauge invariance of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect with a quantum treatment for the electromagnetic field is demonstrated. We provide an exact solution for the electromagnetic ground energy due to the interaction of the quantum electromagnetic field with the classical charges and currents that act as sources of the potentials in a classical description, in the Lorenz gauge. Then, we use first-order perturbation theory to compute an extra change on the electromagnetic ground energy due to the presence of a quantum charged particle with known wave function in the system. This energy in general depends on the quantum particle path in an interferometer, which results in an AB phase difference between the paths. The gauge invariance of this AB phase difference is then shown for the magnetic, electric, and the recently proposed electrodynamic versions of the AB effect. However, the AB phase difference could depend on the gauge for nonclosed paths, which reinforces the view that it only can be measured in closed paths.

Backreaction in spinor QED and decoherence functional

R. Zh. Shaisultanov

Using the Schwinger-Keldysh (closed time path or CTP) and Feynman-Vernon influence functional formalisms we obtain an expression for the influence functional in terms of Bogoliubov coefficients for the case of spinor quantum electrodynamics. Then we derive a CTP effective action in semiclassical approximation and its cumulant expansion. Using it we obtain a equation for the description of the charged particle creation in electric field and of backreaction of charged quantum fields and their fluctuations on time evolution of this electric field. Also an intimate connection between CTP effective action and decoherence functional will allow us to analyze how macroscopic electromagnetic fields are ``measured'' through interaction with charges and thereby rendered classical.

Stochastic Variational Method as a Quantization Scheme II: Quantization of Electromagnetic Fields

Takeshi Kodama, Kazuo Tsushima

Quantization of electromagnetic fields is investigated in the framework of stochastic variational method (SVM). Differently from the canonical quantization, this method does not require canonical form and quantization can be performed directly from the gauge invariant Lagrangian. The gauge condition is used to choose dynamically independent variables. We verify that, in the Coulomb gauge condition, SVM result is completely equivalent to the traditional result. On the other hand, in the Lorentz gauge condition, SVM quantization can be performed without introducing the indefinite metric. The temporal and longitudinal components of the gauge filed, then, behave as c-number functionals affected by quantum fluctuation through the interaction with charged matter fields. To see further the relation between SVM and the canonical quantization, we quantize the usual gauge Lagrangian with the Fermi term and argue a stochastic process with a negative second order correlation is introduced to reproduce the indefinite metric.

Quantum-classical crossover in electrodynamics

János Polonyi

A classical field theory is proposed for the electric current and the electromagnetic field interpolating between microscopic and macroscopic domains. It represents a generalization of the density functional for the dynamics of the current and the electromagnetic field in the quantum side of the crossover and reproduces standard classical electrodynamics on the other side. The effective action derived in the closed time path formalism and the equations of motion follow from the variational principle. The polarization of the Dirac-sea can be taken into account in the quadratic approximation of the action by the introduction of the deplacement field strengths as in conventional classical electrodynamics. Decoherence appears naturally as a simple one-loop effect in this formalism. It is argued that the radiation time arrow is generated from the quantum boundary conditions in time by decoherence at the quantum-classical crossover and the Abraham-Lorentz force arises from the accelerating charge or from other charges in the macroscopic or the microscopic side, respectively. The functional form of the quantum renormalization group, the generalization of the renormalization group method for the density matrix, is proposed to follow the scale dependence through the quantum-classical crossover in a systematical manner.

Quantum phase effects for electrically charged particles: Updated analysis

Alexander L. Kholmetskii, Tolga Yarman, O. Missevitch

Abstract We present an updated analysis of the total expression for the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field, which we previously obtained through the superposition principle for quantum phases of charges and dipoles ( Sci. Rep. , 8 (2018) 11937), and here we re-derive it directly in the framework of the general approach, when the source, the electromagnetic field and the charged particle are quantized. The disclosure of the full set of quantum phase effects for a moving charged particle allows an important update of the wave-particle duality concept by generalizing the de Broglie relationship, where the wave vector associated with the particle is proportional to the vector sum of the mechanical and interactional electromagnetic momenta.

A Classical Explanation of the Bohm-Aharonov Effect

O. Chavoya-Aceves

The motion of a system of particles under electromagnetic interaction is considered. Under the assumption that the force acting on an electric charge is given by the sum of the electromagnetic fields produced by any other charged particles in its neighborhood, we prove that the vector potential of the electromagnetic field has to be considered for the balance of kinetic momentum. The theory cannot be quantized in the usual form -- because it involves a mass matrix that depends on spatial variables -- and the Hamilton's function becomes singular at a distance equal to the geometric mean of the electrodynamic radiuses of electrons and protons.
