Abstract

We investigate the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) patterns, the critical and multicritical behaviors of three-dimensional mixtures of bosonic gases with density-density interactions, characterized by a global $\mathrm{U}(1)\ensuremath{\bigoplus}\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry [one U(1) transformation for each species]. In particular, we consider the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model for two lattice bosonic gases coupled by an on-site interspecies density-density interaction. We study the phase diagram and the critical behaviors along the transition lines of the BEC of one or both species. We present mean-field calculations and finite-size scaling analyses of quantum Monte Carlo data. We also investigate the nature of the multicritical points where the BEC transition lines of the two species meet. The corresponding universality classes are inferred from a renormalization-group analysis of the corresponding multicritical $\mathrm{U}(1)\ensuremath{\bigoplus}\mathrm{U}(1)$ Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}^{4}$ theory. We find two distinct critical behaviors, associated with bicritical and tetracritical points, respectively, depending on the relative strength of the interspecies and intraspecies interactions.

Bose-Einstein condensation and critical behavior of two-component bosonic gases

Giacomo Ceccarelli, Jacopo Nespolo, Andrea Pelissetto C +1 more

We study Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in three-dimensional two-component bosonic gases, characterizing the universal behaviors of the critical modes arising at the BEC transitions. For this purpose, we use field-theoretical (FT) renormalization-group (RG) methods and perform mean-field and numerical calculations. The FT RG analysis is based on the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}^{4}$ theory with two complex scalar fields which has the same symmetry as the bosonic system. In particular, for identical bosons with exchange ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry, coupled by effective density-density interactions, the global symmetry is ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2,e}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{U}(1)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{U}(1)$. At the BEC transition, it may break into ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2,e}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ when both components condense simultaneously, or to $\mathrm{U}(1)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ when only one component condenses. This implies different universality classes for the corresponding critical behaviors. Numerical simulations of the two-component Bose-Hubbard model in the hard-core limit support the RG prediction: when both components condense simultaneously, the critical behavior is controlled by a decoupled XY fixed point, with unusual slowly decaying scaling corrections arising from the onsite interspecies interaction.

First-order, continuous, and multicritical Bose-Einstein condensation in Bose mixtures

Paweł Jakubczyk, Krzysztof Myśliwy, Marek Napiórkowski

We address the possibility of realizing Bose-Einstein condensation as a first-order phase transition by admixture of particles of different species. To this aim we perform a comprehensive analysis of phase diagrams of two-component mixtures of bosons at finite temperatures. As a prototype model, we analyze a binary mixture of Bose particles interacting via an infinite-range (Kac-scaled) two-body potential. We obtain a rich phase diagram, where the transition between the normal and Bose-Einstein-condensed phases may be either continuous or first order. The phase diagram hosts lines of triple points, tricritical points, and quadruple points. We address the structure of the phase diagram depending on the relative magnitudes of the inter- and intraspecies interaction couplings. In addition, even for purely repulsive interactions, we identify a first-order liquid-gas-type transition between noncondensed phases characterized by different particle concentrations. In the obtained phase diagram, a surface of such first-order transitions terminates with a line of critical points.

Phase diagrams, critical, and multicritical behavior of hard-core Bose-Hubbard models

Christian Pich, Erwin Frey

We determine the zero-temperature phase diagram of the hard-core Bose-Hubbard model on a square lattice by mean-field theory supplemented by a linear spin-wave analysis. Due to the interplay between nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interaction and cubic anisotropy several supersolid phases with checkerboard, stripe-domain, or intermediate symmetry are stabilized. The phase diagrams show three different topologies depending on the relative strength of nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interaction. We also find a rich variety of new quantum critical behavior and multicritical points and discuss the corresponding effective actions and universality classes.

Multicriticality and interaction-induced first-order phase transitions in mixtures of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice

Sergii Anufriiev, T. A. Zaleski

We study a critical behavior of mixtures of two species of ultracold bosons trapped in an optical lattice. Using mean-field approximation, we determine the ground-state phase diagram of the system for a wide range of parameters. The introduction of interactions between different species of atoms strongly renormalizes the phase diagram. It can alter the critical behavior modifying multicriticality of crossing points and order of phase transitions in their vicinity between mixed and superfluid states. For selected values of model parameters, the behavior of the system falls out of the $XY$ model universality class, which usually is a hallmark of superfluid phase transition. We supplement our analysis with analytical calculations to explain the observed scenario.

Large- N approximation for one- and two-component dilute Bose gases

Chih-Chun Chien, Fred Cooper, Eddy Timmermans

We discuss the mean-field theories obtained from the leading order in a large-$N$ approximation for one- and two-component dilute Bose gases. For a one-component Bose gas, this approximation has the following properties: the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) phase transition is second order but the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$ is not shifted from the noninteracting gas value ${T}_{0}$. The spectrum of excitations in the BEC phase resembles the Bogoliubov dispersion with the usual coupling constant replaced by the running coupling constant which depends on both temperature and momentum. We then study two-component Bose gases with both inter- and intraspecies interactions and focus on the stability of the mixture state above ${T}_{c}$. Our mean-field approximation predicts an instability from the mixture state to a phase-separated state when the ratio of the interspecies interaction strength to the intraspecies interaction strength (assuming equal strength for both species) exceeds a critical value. At high temperature this is a structural transition and the global translational symmetry is broken. Our work complements previous studies on the instability of the mixture phase in the presence of BEC.

Phase separation in a two-species Bose mixture

Tapan Mishra, Ramesh V. Pai, Bhanu Pratap Das

We obtain the ground-state quantum phase diagram for a two-species Bose mixture in a one-dimensional optical lattice using the finite-size density-matrix renormalization group method. We discuss our results for different combinations of inter- and intraspecies interaction strengths with commensurate and incommensurate fillings of the bosons. The phases we have obtained are a superfluid and a Mott insulator, and a phase separation where the two different species reside in spatially separate regions. The spatially separated phase is further classified into phase-separated superfluid and Mott insulator. The phase separation appears for all the fillings we have considered, whenever the interspecies interaction is slightly larger than the intraspecies interactions.
