Abstract

Recently the power of positive partial transpose preserving (PPTp) and no-signalling (NS) codes in quantum communication has been studied. We continue with this line of research and show that the NS/PPTp/NS∩PPTp codes assisted zero-error quantum capacity depends only on the non-commutative bipartite graph of the channel and the one-shot case can be computed efficiently by semidefinite programming (SDP). As an example, the activated PPTp codes assisted zero-error quantum capacity is carefully studied. We then present a general SDP upper bound QΓof quantum capacity and show it is always smaller than or equal to the “Partial transposition bound” introduced by Holevo and Werner, and the inequality could be strict. This upper bound is found to be additive, and thus is an upper bound of the potential PPTp assisted quantum capacity as well. We further demonstrate that QΓis strictly better than several previously known upper bounds for an explicit class of quantum channels. Finally, we show that QΓcan be used to bound the super-activation of quantum capacity.

Semidefinite Programming Strong Converse Bounds for Classical Capacity

Xin Wang, Wei Dong Xie, Runyao Duan

We investigate the classical communication over quantum channels when assisted by no-signaling and positive-partial-transpose-preserving (PPT) codes, for which both the optimal success probability of a given transmission rate and the one-shot E-error capacity are formalized as semidefinite programs (SDPs). Based on this, we obtain improved SDP finite blocklength converse bounds of general quantum channels for entanglement-assisted codes and unassisted codes. Furthermore, we derive two SDP strong converse bounds for the classical capacity of general quantum channels: for any code with a rate exceeding either of the two bounds of the channel, the success probability vanishes exponentially fast as the number of channel uses increases. In particular, applying our efficiently computable bounds, we derive an improved upper bound on the classical capacity of the amplitude damping channel. We also establish the strong converse property for the classical and private capacities of a new class of quantum channels. We finally study the zero-error setting and provide efficiently computable upper bounds on the one-shot zero-error capacity of a general quantum channel.

On the Power of PPT-Preserving and Non-Signalling Codes

Debbie Leung, William Matthews

We derive one-shot upper bounds for quantum noisy channel codes. We do so by regarding a channel code as a bipartite operation with an encoder belonging to the sender and a decoder belonging to the receiver, and imposing constraints on the bipartite operation. We investigate the power of codes whose bipartite operation is non-signalling from Alice to Bob, positive-partial transpose (PPT) preserving, or both, and derive a simple semidefinite program for the achievable entanglement fidelity. Using the semidefinite program, we show that the non-signalling-assisted quantum capacity for memoryless channels is equal to the entanglement-assisted capacity. We also relate our PPT-preserving codes and the PPT-preserving entanglement distillation protocols studied by Rains. Applying these results to a concrete example, the 3-dimensional Werner-Holevo channel, we find that codes that are non-signalling and PPT-preserving can be strictly less powerful than codes satisfying either one of the constraints, and therefore provide a tighter bound for unassisted codes. Furthermore, PPT-preserving non-signalling codes can send 1 qubit perfectly over two uses of the channel, which has no quantum capacity. We discuss whether this can be interpreted as a form of superactivation of quantum capacity.

Semidefinite programming converse bounds for classical communication over quantum channels

Xin Wang, Wei Dong Xie, Runyao Duan

We study the classical communication over quantum channels when assisted by no-signalling (NS) and PPT-preserving (PPT) codes. We first show that both the optimal success probability of a given transmission rate and one-shot ϵ-error capacity can be formalized as semidefinite programs (SDPs) when assisted by NS or NS∩PPT codes. Based on this, we derive SDP finite blocklength converse bounds for general quantum channels, which also reduce to the converse bound of Polyanskiy, Poor, and Verdu for classical channels. Furthermore, we derive an SDP strong converse bound for the classical capacity of a general quantum channel: for any code with a rate exceeding this bound, the optimal success probability vanishes exponentially fast as the number of channel uses increases. In particular, applying our efficiently computable bound, we derive improved upper bounds to the classical capacity of the amplitude damping channels and also establish the strong converse property for a new class of quantum channels.

Multiplicative Semidefinite Programming Upper Bounds on Quantum No-Signalling-Assisted Zero-Error Capacity

Xin Li, Yinan Li

We study zero-error communication and exact simulation of quantum channels assisted by quantum no-signalling correlations. For a channel with Kraus operator space $K$, we introduce a semidefinite programming parameter $Γ(K)$ that is exactly multiplicative under tensor products and upper-bounds $Θ_{\rm NS}(K)$, where $\log_2Θ_{\rm NS}(K)=C_{0,\rm NS}(K)$ and $C_{0,\rm NS}(K)$ denotes the asymptotic quantum no-signalling-assisted zero-error capacity. Among known upper bounds on $Θ_{\rm NS}$ given by semidefinite programs, $Γ$ is the tightest. We also prove that the previously introduced simulation lower bound $Σ^{-}(K)$ is exactly multiplicative and satisfies $Θ_{\rm NS}(K)\leqΓ(K)\leqΣ^{-}(K)\leqΓ(K)^2$. Using this multiplicativity, we show that neither $S_{0,\rm NS}(K)=\log_2Σ^{-}(K)$ nor its regularized extension $S_{0,\rm NS}(K)=\lim\nolimits_{n\to\infty}n^{-1}\log_2Σ^{-}(K^{\otimes n})$ holds in general. This answers an open question about the asymptotic simulation cost $S_{0,\rm NS}(K)$. For classical-quantum channels, we obtain sharp bounds. If $r$ is the effective output dimension, then $Θ_{\rm NS}\leqΓ\leq(1+r^{1/2})Θ_{\rm NS}/2$ and $Γ\leqΣ^{-}\leq(1+r^{1/2})Γ/2$. If $k$ is the minimum rank of the output support projections, then $Σ^{-}/Θ_{\rm NS}\leq[(1+r^{1/2})/(1+k^{1/2})]^2$, and this bound is sharp for every $1\leq k\leq r$. Thus, we obtain the sharp bound $S_{0,\rm NS}-C_{0,\rm NS}\leq2\log_2[(1+r^{1/2})/(1+k^{1/2})]$.

Semidefinite Programming Converse Bounds for Quantum Communication

Xin Wang, Kun Fang, Runyao Duan

We derive several efficiently computable converse bounds for quantum communication over quantum channels in both the one-shot and asymptotic regime. First, we derive one-shot semidefinite programming (SDP) converse bounds on the amount of quantum information that can be transmitted over a single use of a quantum channel, which improve the previous bound from [Tomamichel/Berta/Renes, Nat. Commun. 7, 2016]. As applications, we study quantum communication over depolarizing channels and amplitude damping channels with finite resources. Second, we find an SDP-strong converse bound for the quantum capacity of an arbitrary quantum channel, which means the fidelity of any sequence of codes with a rate exceeding this bound will vanish exponentially fast as the number of channel uses increases. Furthermore, we prove that the SDP-strong converse bound improves the partial transposition bound introduced by Holevo and Werner. Third, we prove that this SDP strong converse bound is equal to the so-called max-Rains information, which is an analog to the Rains information introduced in [Tomamichel/Wilde/Winter, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 63:715, 2017]. Our SDP strong converse bound is weaker than the Rains information, but it is efficiently computable for general quantum channels.

Activated zero-error classical capacity of quantum channels in the presence of quantum no-signalling correlations.

Runyao Duan, Xin Wang

Recently the one-shot quantum no-signalling assisted zero-error classical capacity of a quantum channel has been formulated as a semidefinite programming (SDP) depending only on the Choi-Kraus operator space of the channel. In this paper, we study the \textit{activated quantum no-signalling assisted zero-error classical capacity} by first allowing the assistance from some noiseless forward communication channel and later paying back the cost of the helper. We show that the one-shot activated capacity can also be formulated as a SDP and derive a number of striking properties of this number. In particular, this number is additive under direct sum, and is always greater than or equal to the super-dense coding bound. An a remarkable consequence, we find that one bit noiseless classical communication is able to fully activate any classical-quantum channel to achieve its asymptotic capacity, or the semidefinite fractional packing number. We also discuss the condition under which a noisy channel can activate an activatable channel. Interestingly, a channel is able to activate itself if its one-shot capacity is greater than or equal to the Golden Ratio - $(1+\sqrt{5})/2$. We also show that the asymptotic activated capacity is still equal to the usual no-signalling assisted capacity. Finally, we show that general the asymptotic no-signalling assisted zero-error capacity does not equal to the semidefinite (fractional) packing number by an explicit construction.

We study zero-error communication and exact simulation of quantum channels assisted by quantum no-signalling correlations. For a channel with Kraus operator space KKK, we introduce a semidefinite programming parameter Γ(K)Γ(K)Γ(K) that is exactly multiplicative under tensor products and upper-bounds ΘNS(K)Θ_{\rm NS}(K)ΘNS(K), where log⁡2ΘNS(K)=C0,NS(K)\log_2Θ_{\rm NS}(K)=C_{0,\rm NS}(K)log2ΘNS(K)=C0,NS(K) and C0,NS(K)C_{0,\rm NS}(K)C0,NS(K) denotes the asymptotic quantum no-signalling-assisted zero-error capacity. Among known upper bounds on ΘNSΘ_{\rm NS}ΘNS given by semidefinite programs, ΓΓΓ is the tightest. We also prove that the previously introduced simulation lower bound Σ−(K)Σ^{-}(K)Σ−(K) is exactly multiplicative and satisfies ΘNS(K)≤Γ(K)≤Σ−(K)≤Γ(K)2Θ_{\rm NS}(K)\leqΓ(K)\leqΣ^{-}(K)\leqΓ(K)^2ΘNS(K)≤Γ(K)≤Σ−(K)≤Γ(K)2. Using this multiplicativity, we show that neither S0,NS(K)=log⁡2Σ−(K)S_{0,\rm NS}(K)=\log_2Σ^{-}(K)S0,NS(K)=log2Σ−(K) nor its regularized extension S0,NS(K)=lim⁡n→∞n−1log⁡2Σ−(K⊗n)S_{0,\rm NS}(K)=\lim\nolimits_{n\to\infty}n^{-1}\log_2Σ^{-}(K^{\otimes n})S0,NS(K)=limn→∞n−1log2Σ−(K⊗n) holds in general. This answers an open question about the asymptotic simulation cost S0,NS(K)S_{0,\rm NS}(K)S0,NS(K). For classical-quantum channels, we obtain sharp bounds. If rrr is the effective output dimension, then ΘNS≤Γ≤(1+r1/2)ΘNS/2Θ_{\rm NS}\leqΓ\leq(1+r^{1/2})Θ_{\rm NS}/2ΘNS≤Γ≤(1+r1/2)ΘNS/2 and Γ≤Σ−≤(1+r1/2)Γ/2Γ\leqΣ^{-}\leq(1+r^{1/2})Γ/2Γ≤Σ−≤(1+r1/2)Γ/2. If kkk is the minimum rank of the output support projections, then Σ−/ΘNS≤[(1+r1/2)/(1+k1/2)]2Σ^{-}/Θ_{\rm NS}\leq[(1+r^{1/2})/(1+k^{1/2})]^2Σ−/ΘNS≤[(1+r1/2)/(1+k1/2)]2, and this bound is sharp for every 1≤k≤r1\leq k\leq r1≤k≤r. Thus, we obtain the sharp bound S0,NS−C0,NS≤2log⁡2[(1+r1/2)/(1+k1/2)]S_{0,\rm NS}-C_{0,\rm NS}\leq2\log_2[(1+r^{1/2})/(1+k^{1/2})]S0,NS−C0,NS≤2log2[(1+r1/2)/(1+k1/2)].
