Abstract

Penning ionization reactions in merged beams with precisely controlled collision energies have been shown to accurately probe quantum mechanical effects in reactive collisions. A complete microscopic understanding of the reaction is, however, faced with two major challenges-the highly excited character of the reaction's entrance channel and the limited precision of even the best state-of-the-art ab initio potential energy surfaces. Here, we suggest photoassociation spectroscopy as a tool to identify the character of orbiting resonances in the entrance channel and probe the ionization width as a function of interparticle separation. We introduce the basic concept, using the example of metastable helium and argon, and discuss the general conditions under which this type of spectroscopy will be successful.

Observation of Resonances in Penning Ionization Reactions at Sub-Kelvin Temperatures in Merged Beams

Alon Henson, Sasha Gersten, Yuval Shagam +2 more

Experiments have lagged theory in exploring chemical interactions at temperatures so low that translational degrees of freedom can no longer be treated classically. The difficulty has been to realize in the laboratory low-enough collisional velocities between neutral reactants to access this regime. We report here the realization of merged neutral supersonic beams and the manifestation of clear nonclassical effects in the resulting reactions. We observed orbiting resonances in the Penning ionization reaction of argon and molecular hydrogen with metastable helium, leading to a sharp absolute ionization rate increase in the energy range corresponding to a few degrees kelvin down to 10 millikelvin. Our method should be widely applicable to many canonical chemical reactions.

On the role of Penning ionization in photoassociation spectroscopy

E van der Zwan, D. van Oosten, Driss Nehari +2 more

We study the role of Penning ionization on the photoassociation spectra of He(^3S)-He(^3S). The experimental setup is discussed and experimental results for different intensities of the probe laser are shown. For modelling the experimental results we consider coupled-channel calculations of the crossing of the ground state with the excited state at the Condon point. The coupled-channel calculations are first applied to model systems, where we consider two coupled channels without ionization, two coupled channels with ionization, and three coupled channels, for which only one of the excited states is ionizing. Finally, coupled-channel calculations are applied to photoassociation of He(^3S)-He(^3S) and good agreement is obtained between the model and the experimental results.

Coherent-control mechanisms of Penning and associative ionization in cold He*(2 3S)−He*(2 3S) reactive scattering

Juan J. Omiste, Timur V. Tscherbul, Paul W. Brumer

We explore coherent control of Penning and associative ionization in cold collisions of metastable ${\mathrm{He}}^{*}(2{\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}}^{3}S)$ atoms via the quantum interference between different states of the ${\mathrm{He}}_{2}^{*}$ collision complex. By tuning the preparation coefficients of the initial atomic spin states, we can benefit from the quantum interference between molecular channels to maximize or minimize the cross sections for Penning and associative ionization. In particular, we find that we can enhance the ionization ratio by 30% in the cold regime. This work is significant for the coherent control of chemical reactions in the cold and ultracold regimes.

Ultracold collisions in metastable helium

G. Peach, Daniel Cocks, Ian B. Whittingham

Photoassociation processes are studied in ultracold collisions between different isotopes of metastable He(2 3 S) and He(2 3 P) atoms; Penning and associative ionization rates for collisions between two He(2 3 S) atoms are also obtained. Comparisons are made with data from existing experiments.

Photoassociation Spectroscopy of Cold He(23S) Atoms

Norbert Herschbach, Paul J. J. Tol, W. Vassen +5 more

We observe vibrational states by photoassociation spectroscopy of cold He(2 3S) atoms. Photoassociation resonances are detected as peaks in the Penning ionization rate over a frequency range of 20 GHz below the atomic 2 3S1-2 3P2 transition frequency. We have observed three vibrational series, of which two can be identified. A possible mechanism to explain the observed increase of the Penning ionization rate is discussed.

Coherence in penning ionization and first kind collisions: volume recombination of ions/electrons. Technical report no. 12, dec 78-dec 79

L. D. Schearer, W. F. Parks

A thermal-energy beam of helium atoms in the metastable state is used to coherently excite ions of Sr, Ca, and Ba in a Penning collision. The anisotropic excited state distributions appears as Polarized line emission from the excited ions. The degree of ion alignment may be used to determine the populations of the quasi-molecular states of the ion-atom pair. The coherent emission is also utilized to obtain Hanle signals from which the radiative decay rate of the excited ion is determined. This is the first case in which coherence is produced in a collision process involving Penning ionization. The alignment of the Penning ions is an important new parameter in the description of these reactions. In an effort to extend such observations to molecular systems a nitrogen molecular metastable beam source was demonstrated. The use of metal vapor targets and the excitation rate of the excited states of Cd and Zn in energy transfer collisions with the N2/sub (m)/ enable us to determine the vibrational distribution of the A /sup 3/SIGMA state of N/sub 2/ in the beam. Energy transfer cross sections and some Penning cross sections were measured in the beam system.
