Two cold atoms in a time‐dependent harmonic trap in one dimension

Abstract

We analyze the dynamics of two atoms with a short‐ranged pair interaction in a one‐dimensional harmonic trap with time‐dependent frequency. Our analysis is focused on two representative cases: (i) a sudden change of the trapping frequency from one value to another, and (ii) a periodic trapping frequency. In case (i), the dynamics of the interacting and the corresponding non‐interacting systems turn out to be similar. In the second case, however, the interacting system can behave quite differently, especially close to parametric resonance. For instance, in the regions where such resonance occurs we find that the interaction can significantly reduce the rate of energy increase. The implications for applications of our findings to cool or heat the system are also discussed.

Dynamics of entanglement entropy of interacting fermions in a 1D driven harmonic trap

J. R. McKenney, William J. Porter, Joaquín E. Drut

Following up on a recent analysis of two cold atoms in a time-dependent harmonic trap in one dimension, we explore the entanglement entropy of two and three fermions in the same situation when driven through a parametric resonance. We find that the presence of such a resonance in the two-particle system leaves a clear imprint on the entanglement entropy. We show how the signal is modified by attractive and repulsive contact interactions, and how it remains present for the three-particle system. Additionaly, we extend the work of recent experiments to demonstrate how restricting observation to a limited subsystem gives rise to locally thermal behavior.

Detailed analysis of two simplified Rydberg dressed atoms confined in a harmonic trap

Leila Chia, Nabila Grar

By using a step-like potential, it is possible to mimic the Rydberg short range part of the interaction between two atoms. It is easy in this case to establish an analytical solution of the Schrödinger equation. In this contribution, we are analyzing in detail this simplified model by highlighting the major players in different interaction schemes (strengths and ranges), different dimensionalities and the impact on spatial correlation. We are able to achieve an improvement to this model by applying a perturbation treatment to the potential. The dynamical aspects related to a sudden change of the potential features are also investigated.

Exact dynamics of a one dimensional Bose gas in a periodic time-dependent harmonic trap

Stefano Scopa, Jérémie M. Unterberger, Dragi Karevski

Abstract We study the unitary dynamics of a 1D gas of hard-core bosons trapped into a harmonic potential which varies periodically in time with frequency . Such periodic systems can be classified into orbits of different monodromies corresponding to two different physical situations, namely the case in which the bosonic cloud remains stable during the time-evolution and the case where it turns out to be unstable. In the present work we derive in the large particle number limit exact results for the stroboscopic evolution of the energy and particle densities in both physical situations.

Fermionic Properties of Two Interacting Bosons in a Two-Dimensional Harmonic Trap

Pere Mujal, Artur Polls, Bruno Juliá-Díaz

The system of two interacting bosons in a two-dimensional harmonic trap is compared with the system consisting of two noninteracting fermions in the same potential. In particular, we discuss how the properties of the ground state of the system, e.g., the different contributions to the total energy, change as we vary both the strength and range of the atom–atom interaction. In particular, we focus on the short-range and strong interacting limit of the two-boson system and compare it to the noninteracting two-fermion system by properly symmetrizing the corresponding degenerate ground state wave functions. In that limit, we show that the density profile of the two-boson system has a tendency similar to the system of two noninteracting fermions. Similarly, the correlations induced when the interaction strength is increased result in a similar pair correlation function for both systems.

Analytical solutions for the dynamics of two trapped interacting ultracold atoms

Zbigniew Idziaszek, Tommaso Calarco

We discuss exact solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation for the system of two ultracold atoms confined in an axially symmetric harmonic potential. We investigate different geometries of the trapping potential, in particular we study the properties of eigenenergies and eigenfunctions for quasi-one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional traps. We show that the quasi-one-dimensional and the quasi-two-dimensional regimes for two atoms can be already realized in the traps with moderately large (or small) ratios of the trapping frequencies in the axial and the transverse directions. Finally, we apply our theory to Feshbach resonances for trapped atoms. Introducing in our description an energy-dependent scattering length we calculate analytically the eigenenergies for two trapped atoms in the presence of a Feshbach resonance.
