Abstract

The Ising square lattice model with nearest-neighbor (nn) interactions ($J_1$) is one of the few exactly solvable models [1]. Adding next-neareast- neighbor (nnn) interactions ($J_2$) or a magnetic field (or both) leads to the non solvability of the model and only some approximate solutions are possible. In this brief report we will review some results obtained within effective field theory. We will show that besides second-order transitions there are also lines of first-order transitions and the coordinates of tricritical points are calculated.

First-order phase transitions in the Ising square lattice with first- and second-neighbor interactions

José Luis Morán-López, F. Aguilera‐Granja, J. M. Sánchez

The phase diagram of the Ising square lattice with first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions (${\mathit{J}}_{1}$ and ${\mathit{J}}_{2}$) is calculated within the framework of the cluster-variation method. The Hamiltonian is solved within the nine-point-cluster approximation. In contrast to previous studies we find that the phase transition from the superantiferromagnetic to the paramagnetic state is of first order in the range 0.5R=${\mathit{J}}_{1}$/${\mathit{J}}_{2}$1.144. The non-Ising critical behavior observed in that range of interactions might be due to that phenomenon.

Triangular Ising model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor couplings in a field

Xiaofeng Qian, Henk W. J. Blöte

The authors study the Ising model on the triangular lattice with nearest-neighbor couplings K(nn) , next-nearest-neighbor couplings K(nnn) >0 , and a magnetic field H . This work is done by means of finite-size scaling of numerical results of transfer matrix calculations, and Monte Carlo simulations. We determine the phase diagram and confirm the character of the critical manifolds. The emphasis of this work is on the antiferromagnetic case K(nn) <0 , but we also explore the ferromagnetic regime K(nn) >/=0 for H=0 . For K(nn) <0 and H=0 we locate a critical phase presumably covering the whole range -infinity< K(nn) <0 . For K(nn) <0 , H not equal 0 we locate a plane of phase transitions containing a line of tricritical three-state Potts transitions. In the limit H-->infinity this line leads to a tricritical model of hard hexagons with an attractive next-nearest-neighbor potential.

Analysis of the phase transition for the Ising model on the frustrated square lattice

Ansgar Kalz, A. Honecker, Marion Moliner

We analyze the phase transition of the frustrated ${J}_{1}$-${J}_{2}$ Ising model with antiferromagnetic nearest- and strong next-nearest-neighbor interactions on the square lattice. Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations we show that the nature of the phase transition for $1/2<{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}1$ is not of the weakly universal type---as commonly believed---but we conclude from the clearly doubly peaked structure of the energy histograms that the transition is of weak first order. Motivated by these results, we analyze the phase transitions via field-theoretic methods; i.e., we calculate the central charge of the underlying field theory via transfer-matrix techniques and present, furthermore, a field-theoretic discussion on the phase-transition behavior of the model. Starting from the conformally invariant fixed point of two decoupled critical Ising models (${J}_{1}=0$), we calculate the effect of the nearest-neighbor coupling term perturbatively using operator product expansions. As an effective action we obtain the Ashkin-Teller model.

Frustrated spin- 12 Ising antiferromagnet on a square lattice in a transverse field

A. Bobák, E. Jurčišinová, Marian Jurčisin +1 more

We investigate the phase transitions and tricritical behaviors of the frustrated Ising antiferromagnet with first- (J_{1}<0) and second- (J_{2}<0) nearest-neighbor interactions in a transverse field Ω on the square lattice using an effective-field theory with correlations based on a single-spin approximation. We have proposed a functional for the free energy to obtain the phase diagram in the T-R (R=J_{2}/|J_{1}|) or T-Ω planes. It is shown that due to the transverse field the phase transition between ordered and disordered phases changes in the tricritical point (TCP) from the second order to the first order. The longitudinal and transverse magnetizations are also studied for selected values of R and Ω. In particular, the variation of TCP at the ground state in the three-dimensional space is constructed. For some special cases, values of the critical temperature and the critical transverse field have been determined analytically.

Effects of third-neighbour interactions on the criticality of the quantum Ising model on the frustrated square lattice

Matheus José Passos Bento Vianna de [UNIFESP] Oliveira

In the present work, we investigate the phase transitions of the Ising model with interactions between first (J1), second (J2) and third (J3) neighbours in the square lattice with transverse magnetic field. In this study, we adopt antiferromagnetic interactions between first and second neighbours and consider third-neighbours interactions to be both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic. The description of the classical and quantum phase transitions of the model is carried out by adopting the cluster mean-field approximation with four sites. As a result, we identified that strong enough third-neighbor interactions lead to the disappearance of tricriticality at the boundary between the superantiferromagnetic (SAF) and paramagnetic (PM) phases. In particular, tricriticality is more sensitive to the presence of ferromagnetic interactions, disappearing for |J3| ă 0.3|J1| in the absence of transverse field. In the presence of antiferromagnetic J3, we find first-order transitions between the degenerate staggered dimer phase and the PM phase. Furthermore, we find a change in the nature of the SAF-PM phase transitions introduced by quantum fluctuations. This phenomenon, called quantum annealed criticality (QAC), consists of classical first-order phase transitions that become second-order phase transitions in the presence of a strong enough transverse field. Our results allow establishing a range of parameters J2 and J3 for which it is possible to find QAC. The analysis of the model criticality allows concluding that a strong enough J3 interaction eliminates the QAC phenomenon. Therefore, our results suggest that attempts to realize QAC in a square lattice system should avoid strong interactions between third neighbors, mainly if these interactions are ferromagnetic.

Phase diagram and critical behavior of the square-lattice Ising model with competing nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions

Junqi Yin, David Paul Landau

Using the parallel tempering algorithm and graphics processing unit accelerated techniques, we have performed large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model on a square lattice with antiferromagnetic (repulsive) nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions of the same strength and subject to a uniform magnetic field. Both transitions from the (2x1) and row-shifted (2x2) ordered phases to the paramagnetic phase are continuous. From our data analysis, re-entrance behavior of the (2x1) critical line and a bicritical point which separates the two ordered phases at T=0 are confirmed. Based on the critical exponents we obtained along the phase boundary, Suzuki's weak universality seems to hold.
