Single photons from dissipation in coupled cavities

Abstract

We propose a single-photon source based on a pair of weakly nonlinear optical cavities subject to a one-directional dissipative coupling. When both cavities are driven by mutually coherent fields, sub-Poissonian light is generated in the target cavity even when the nonlinear energy per photon is much smaller than the dissipation rate. The sub-Poissonian character of the field holds over a delay measured by the inverse photon lifetime, as in the conventional photon blockade, thus allowing single-photon emission under pulsed excitation. We discuss a possible implementation of the dissipative coupling relevant to photonic platforms.

Sub-Poissonian light generation in a coupled quantum dot-photonic molecule system

Yuanan Zhang, Zhongyuan Yu, Wen Zhang +2 more

We theoretically investigate the photon statistics in a cavity quantum electrodynamics system of a single quantum dot (QD) coupled to photonic molecule. Our previous work [Wen Zhang et.al, Phys. Rev. A 89, 043832 (2014)] has shown that QD-bimodal cavity system can generate ultrastrongly sub-Poissonian light by regulating the ratio between driving strengths of two cavity modes. Here we study two coupled single-mode nanocavities with a QD coupling to one of them as a photonic molecule system. Statistical character of photon emission is presented by evaluating the zero-delay secondorder correlation function g2(0). When both cavities with/without QD are driven, the sub-Poissonian character can be optimized by regulating the ratio between driving strengths of each cavities. We also present the dependences of other system parameters on the photon statistics. The physical mechanism of both effects is to optimize the combination of super-Poissonian and coherent light which results in sub-Poissonian light generation. As a result g2(0) can be reduced up to several orders of magnitude compared with the QD coupled one-mode-cavity system.

Loss-Enabled Sub-Poissonian Light Generation in a Bimodal Nanocavity

Arka Majumdar, Michal Bajcsy, Armand Rundquist +1 more

We propose an implementation of a source of strongly sub-poissonian light in a system consisting of a quantum dot coupled to both modes of a lossy bimodal optical cavity. When one mode of the cavity is resonantly driven with coherent light, the system will act as an efficient single photon filter, and the transmitted light will have a strongly sub-poissonian character. In addition to numerical simulations demonstrating this effect, we present a physical explanation of the underlying mechanism. In particular, we show that the effect results from an interference between the coherent light transmitted through the resonant cavity and the super-poissonian light generated by photon-induced tunneling. Peculiarly, this effect vanishes in the absence of the cavity loss.

Photon Blockade in a Two-Cavity System with Two-Photon Dissipation

Hongming Tao

The photon blockade is a key quantum-nonlinear effect in which the admission of a second photon to a resonator is inhibited, enabling on-demand single-photon emission. Its practical use is limited by the weak intrinsic nonlinearity of most optical platforms. We address this limitation in a coupled-cavity architecture by engineering two-photon dissipation as a control resource rather than a detrimental loss. Within a quantum-master-equation framework, we model single-photon loss, engineered two-photon decay, and pure dephasing, and analyze their joint impact on the steady-state statistics of the driven cavities. We track the zero-delay correlation, photon populations, and detuning/drive dependences under distinct driving schemes (both cavities driven vs. single-cavity drive with. The results show that adding two-photon dissipation (i) suppresses multiphoton occupation and strengthens antibunching, (ii) broadens the operating window in detuning and drive amplitude, and (iii) improves robustness against moderate dephasing and device imperfections. A mechanism analysis attributes these gains to interference between coherent second-order processes and dissipative selection that stabilizes the odd-photon manifold. The study yields design guidelines for realizing stable, cavity-based single-photon sources using dissipation engineering.

A Photon Blockade in a Coupled Cavity System Mediated by an Atom

Ming-Cui Li, Aixi Chen

We investigate theoretically the photon statistics in a coupled cavity system mediated by a two-level atom. The system consists of a linear cavity weakly driven by a continuous laser, and a nonlinear cavity containing an atom inside. We find that there exists a photon blockade in the linear cavity for both parameter regimes where the coupling strength between the atom and the nonlinear cavity is greater (or less) than the dissipation rate of the linear cavity. We also extend our model by pumping the two cavities simultaneously and find that the conventional photon blockade is apparent in the linear cavity, whereas the unconventional photon blockade appears in the nonlinear cavity. These results show that our work has potential applications for a single photon source in a weakly nonlinear system.

Single Photon Generation in a Cavity Optomechanical System induced by a Nonlinear Photonic Crystal

Bijita Sarma, Amarendra K. Sarma

We propose a novel scheme for realizing single-photon blockade in a weakly driven hybrid cavity optomechanical system consisting of a nonlinear photonic crystal. Sub-Poissonian statistics is realized even when the single-photon optomechanical coupling strength is smaller than the decay rate of the optical mode. The scheme relaxes the requirement of strong coupling for photon blockade in optomechanical systems. It is shown that photon blockade could be generated at the telecommunication wavelength.

Sub-Poissonian photon emission in coupled double quantum dots–cavity system

Han Ye, Yiwei Peng, Zhong-Yuan Yu +2 more

In this work, we theoretically analyze the few-photon emissions generated in a coupled double quantum dots (CDQDs)-single mode microcavity system, under continuous wave and pulse excitation. Compared with the uncoupled case, strong sub-Poissonian character is achieved in a CDQDs–cavity system at a certain laser frequency. Based on the proposed scheme, single photon generation can be obtained separately under QD–cavity resonant condition and off-resonant condition. For different cavity decay rates, we reveal that laser frequency detunings of minimum second-order autocorrelation function are discrete and can be divided into three regions. Moreover, the non-ideal situation where two QDs are not identical is discussed, indicating the robustness of the proposed scheme, which possesses sub-Poissonian character in a large QD difference variation range.
