Hall effect, edge states, and Haldane exclusion statistics in two-dimensional space

Abstract

We clarify the relation between two kinds of statistics for particle excitations in planar systems: the braid statistics of anyons and the Haldane exclusion statistics (HES). It is shown nonperturbatively that the HES exists for incompressible anyon liquid in the presence of a Hall response. We also study the statistical properties of a specific quantum anomalous Hall model with Chern-Simons term by perturbation in both compressible and incompressible regimes, where the crucial role of edge states to the HES is shown.

Quantum Hall systems

Lucjan Jacak, Piotr Sitko, Konrad Wieczorek +1 more

Abstract The book presents the wide range of topics in two-dimensional physics of quantum Hall systems, especially fractional quantum Hall states. It starts with the fundamental problems of quantum statistics in two dimensions and the corresponding braid group formalism. The braid group formalism of anyons (previously known) is developed for composite fermions. The effective formalism used in many-body quantum Hall theories — the Chern–Simons theory is also presented. The Chern–Simons theory of anyons (particles obeying fractional statistics) and composite fermions (related to Hall systems) is given, in detail. Numerical studies, which play the important role in quantum Hall analyses, are presented for spherical systems (Haldane sphere). The composite fermion theory is tested in numerical studies. The concept of the hierarchy of condensed states of composite fermion excitations is introduced (in analogy to the Haldane hierarchy). The hierarchies of odd-denominator states and even-denominator states are presented. The BCS paired Hall state is also discussed. An introduction to multi-component quantum Hall systems and spin quantum Hall systems is sketched.

Fractional exclusion and braid statistics in one dimension: a study via dimensional reduction of Chern–Simons theory*

Fei Ye, P. A. Marchetti, Zhixun Su +1 more

Abstract The relation between braid and exclusion statistics is examined in one-dimensional systems, within the framework of Chern–Simons statistical transmutation in gauge invariant form with an appropriate dimensional reduction. If the matter action is anomalous, as for chiral fermions, a relation between braid and exclusion statistics can be established explicitly for both mutual and nonmutual cases. However, if it is not anomalous, the exclusion statistics of emergent low energy excitations is not necessarily connected to the braid statistics of the physical charged fields of the system. Finally, we also discuss the bosonization of one-dimensional anyonic systems through T-duality.

Exclusion Statistics for Non-Abelian Quantum Hall States

Kareljan Schoutens

We determine the exclusion statistics properties of the fundamental edge quasiparticles over a specific $\ensuremath{\nu}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\frac{1}{2}$ non-Abelian quantum Hall state known as the $q\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}2$ Pfaffian state. The fundamental excitations are the edge electrons of charge $\ensuremath{-}e$ and the edge quasiholes of charge $+e/4$. We explicitly determine thermodynamic distribution functions and establish a duality which generalizes the duality for fractional exclusion statistics as described by F. D. M. Haldane.

Study of Quantum Hall Effect and Its Relation to Conformal Field Theory

Shima Bahrampour Lomer, M. N. Najafi, Hosein Mohammadzadeh

The quantum Hall effect is one of the most challenging problems in condensed matter physics in which many rare physical phenomena like fractional charges and generally the fractional statistics are involved. In the integer quantum Hall effect the role of the disorder is more than others. The important point in describing these systems is that their bulk states should be gapful and in this sense the system should be incompressible. For describing the electron condensates in an arbitrary filling fraction with the odd denominator one needs the topological U(1) Chern-Simons effective field theory. Our motivation for using these field theories is the emergence of quantized conductivity. This effective field theory also has the ability of constructing the hierarchical fractional condensates with various filling factors. The excitations of these theories have fractional statistics which are investigated in this review. The non-Abelian Chern-Simons for quantum Hall systems will be also investigated. The interesting point is that the edge states of these systems are gapless and their excitations are equipped with the Kac-Moody algebra. The connection to the conformal field theories can be established using this point. The investigation of this correspondence is one of the aims of the present thesis. The connection to the logarithmic conformal field theories (e.g. for the Haldane-Rezaei wave function) is also reported in some works which will be addressed in this thesis.

Non-Abelian statistics in quantum Hall systems

Kareljan Schoutens, Eddy Ardonne

It has long been known that, under the laws of quantum mechanics, particles in two spatial dimensions may exhibit non-abelian braid statistics. In this note we briefly discuss particular states of matter, so-called paired and clustered quantum Hall states, which offer a concrete realization of this scenario: quasi-holes over these quantum Hall states satisfy non-abelian braid statistics. The associated degeneracies have their origin in combinatorial properties of (para-)fermions in conformal field theory. We also discuss the exclusion statistics of edge excitations in these quantum Hall systems.
