Abstract

We study how one-particle correlations transfer to manifest as two-particle correlations in the context of parametric down-conversion (PDC), a process in which a pump photon is annihilated to produce two entangled photons. We work in the polarization degree of freedom and show that for any two-qubit generation process that is both trace-preserving and entropy-nondecreasing, the concurrence $C(\ensuremath{\rho})$ of the generated two-qubit state $\ensuremath{\rho}$ follows an intrinsic upper bound with $C(\ensuremath{\rho})\ensuremath{\le}(1+P)/2$, where $P$ is the degree of polarization of the pump photon. We also find that for the class of two-qubit states that is restricted to have only two nonzero diagonal elements such that the effective dimensionality of the two-qubit state is the same as the dimensionality of the pump polarization state, the upper bound on concurrence is the degree of polarization itself, that is, $C(\ensuremath{\rho})\ensuremath{\le}P$. Our work shows that the maximum manifestation of two-particle correlations as entanglement is dictated by one-particle correlations. The formalism developed in this work can be extended to include multiparticle systems and can thus have important implications towards deducing the upper bounds on multiparticle entanglement, for which no universally accepted measure exists.

Intrinsic degree of coherence of two-qubit states and measures of two-particle quantum correlations

Nilakantha Meher, Abu Musa Patoary, Girish Ashok Kulkarni +1 more

Recently, a basis-invariant measure of coherence known as the intrinsic degree of coherence has been established for classical and single-particle quantum states [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 36 , 2765 ( 2019 ) JOBPDE 0740-3224 10.1364/JOSAB.36.002765 ]. In this article, we use the same mathematical construction to define the intrinsic degree of coherence of two-qubit states and demonstrate its usefulness in quantifying two-particle quantum correlations and entanglement. In this context, we first show that the intrinsic degree of coherence of a two-qubit state puts an upper bound on the violations of Bell inequalities that can be achieved with the state and that a two-qubit state with an intrinsic degree of coherence less than 1 / 3 cannot violate Bell inequalities. We then show that the quantum discord of a two-qubit state, which quantifies the amount of quantum correlations available in the two-qubit state for certain tasks, is bounded from above by the intrinsic degree of coherence of the state. Next, in the context of two-particle entanglement, we show that the range of values that the concurrence of a two-qubit state can take is decided by the intrinsic degree of coherence of the two-qubit state together with that of the individual qubits. Finally, for the polarization two-qubit states generated by the parametric down-conversion of a pump photon, we propose an experimental scheme to measure the intrinsic degree of coherence of two-qubit states. We also present our theoretical study that shows how the intrinsic degree of coherence of a pump photon dictates the maximum intrinsic degree of coherence of the generated two-qubit state.

Full-field mapping of spatially varying polarization entanglement generated from spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Cheng Li, Girish Kulkarni, Isaac Soward +6 more

Two-photon states generated from spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) can display entanglement in all degrees of freedom (DoFs) of light, including spatial, temporal, and polarization. The coupling between different DoFs of a two-photon state has been shown to display rich structures that enable novel and robust information processing schemes. While existing literature has studied these couplings by post-selecting the SPDC field, a comprehensive understanding of the inherent spatial-polarization coupling produced in the SPDC process is still lacking. This work produces a full spatial map of the polarization entanglement generated across the entire SPDC field, which contains an entire class of near-maximally polarization-entangled states with an average concurrence of 0.8303 +/- 0.0004. The spatial-polarization coupling manifests as radially or linearly varying polarization-entangled states, whose wavefunctions are dependent on the transverse momenta of the down-converted photons and the pump beam, respectively. Our study lays important groundwork for further exploiting the coupling between entanglement in different DoFs for future quantum technologies

Experimental Demonstration of Polarization Entanglement from a Spatiotemporally Incoherent Source

Cheng Li, Boris Braverman, Girish Ashok Kulkarni +1 more

Spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC)-based sources of photonic entangled states are usually generated using coherent pump fields. For temporal, spatial, and polarization degree of freedom, the down-converted light entanglement is limited by the coherence of the pump in the same degree of freedom. However, the effect of pump coherence on the entanglement in a different degree of freedom remains largely unexplored. Here we experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization entanglement from SPDC pumped by a light emitting diode (LED), a spatiotemporally incoherent pump. The two-photon state is found to have a concurrence of 0.562 and purity of 0.647.

Transfer of classical non-separable state to hybrid entangled two photon state in parametric down conversion process

M. V. Jabir, N. Apurv Chaitanya, G. K. Samanta

Summary form only given. Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), one of the most important nonlinear processes, is of paramount interest especially in the field of quantum optics due to its intrinsic capability in generating entangled photon pairs in different degree of freedoms (DoFs). The spatial distribution of the paired photons generated through SPDC process are highly influenced by different crystal parameters including birefringence and length, and the spatial structure of the pump beam [1]. Recent studies have shown the transfer of pump properties such as phase profile and doughnut intensity distribution [2] into the transverse amplitude of heralded single photon. Here we report, first time to best of our knowledge, the direct transfer of the non-separable state in OAM and polarization DoFs of classical pump beam to generate two photons state with hybrid entanglement in both OAM and polarization. Using same scheme one can produce macroscopic entanglement with very high quanta of OAM.

Dimensionality of the spatiotemporal entanglement of parametric down-conversion photon pairs

A. Gatti, T. Corti, E. Brambilla +1 more

In this work, the Schmidt number of the two-photon state generated by parametric down-conversion (PDC) is evaluated in the framework of a fully spatiotemporal model for PDC. A comparison with the results obtained in either purely spatial or purely temporal models shows that the degree of entanglement of the PDC state cannot be trivially reduced to the product of the Schmidt numbers obtained in models with lower dimensionality, unless the detected bandwidth is very narrow. This result is a consequence of the nonfactorability of the state in the spatial and temporal degrees of freedoms of twin photons. In the limit of a broad pump beam, we provide a geometrical interpretation of the Schmidt number as the ratio between the volume of the phase-matching region and of a correlation volume.

Transfer of temporal coherence in parametric down-conversion

Girish Ashok Kulkarni, Prashant Kumar, Anand K. Jha

We show that in parametric down-conversion the coherence properties of a temporally partially coherent pump field get entirely transferred to the down-converted entangled two-photon field. Under the assumption that the frequency bandwidth of the down-converted signal-idler photons is much larger than that of the pump, we derive the temporal coherence functions for the down-converted field, for both infinitely fast and time-averaged detection schemes. We show that in each scheme the coherence function factorizes into two separate coherence functions with one of them carrying the entire statistical information of the pump field. In situations in which the pump is a Gaussian Schell-model field, we derive explicit expressions for the coherence functions. Finally, we show that the concurrence of time-energy-entangled two-qubit states is bounded by the degree of temporal coherence of the pump field. This study can have important implications for understanding how correlations of the pump field manifest as two-particle entanglement as well as for harnessing energy-time entanglement for long-distance quantum communication protocols.
