Abstract

We investigate a free one-dimensional spinless Fermi gas, and the Tonks–Girardeau gas interacting with a single impurity particle of equal mass. We obtain a Fredholm determinant representation for the time-dependent correlation function of the impurity particle. This representation is valid for an arbitrary temperature and an arbitrary repulsive or attractive impurity-gas δ -function interaction potential. It includes, as particular cases, the representations obtained for zero temperature and arbitrary repulsion in (Gamayun et al 2015 Nucl. Phys. B 892 83–104 ), and for arbitrary temperature and infinite repulsion in (Izergin and Pronko 1998 Nucl. Phys. B 520 594–632 ).

Zero temperature momentum distribution of an impurity in a polaron state of one-dimensional Fermi and Tonks-Girardeau gases

Oleksandr Gamayun, Oleg Lychkovskiy, Mikhail B. Zvonarev

We investigate the momentum distribution function of a single distinguishable impurity particle which formed a polaron state in a gas of either free fermions or Tonks-Girardeau bosons in one spatial dimension. We obtain a Fredholm determinant representation of the distribution function for the Bethe ansatz solvable model of an impurity-gas \delta δ -function interaction potential at zero temperature, in both repulsive and attractive regimes. We deduce from this representation the fourth power decay at a large momentum, and a weakly divergent (quasi-condensate) peak at a finite momentum. We also demonstrate that the momentum distribution function in the limiting case of infinitely strong interaction can be expressed through a correlation function of the one-dimensional impenetrable anyons.

Impurity Green's function of a one-dimensional Fermi gas

Oleksandr Gamayun, A. G. Pronko, Mikhail B. Zvonarev

We consider a one-dimensional gas of spin-1/2 fermions interacting through δ-function repulsive potential of an arbitrary strength. For the case of all fermions but one having spin up, we calculate time-dependent two-point correlation function of the spin-down fermion. This impurity Green's function is represented in the thermodynamic limit as an integral of Fredholm determinants of integrable linear integral operators.

Exact nonequilibrium dynamics of finite-temperature Tonks-Girardeau gases

Y. Y. Atas, Dimitri M. Gangardt, Isabelle Bouchoule +1 more

Describing finite-temperature nonequilibrium dynamics of interacting many-particle systems is a notoriously challenging problem in quantum many-body physics. Here we provide an exact solution to this problem for a system of strongly interacting bosons in one dimension in the Tonks-Girardeau regime of infinitely strong repulsive interactions. Using the Fredholm determinant approach and the Bose-Fermi mapping, we show how the problem can be reduced to a single-particle basis, wherein the finite-temperature effects enter the solution via an effective ``dressing'' of the single-particle wave functions by the Fermi-Dirac occupation factors. We demonstrate the utility of our approach and its computational efficiency in two nontrivial out-of-equilibrium scenarios: collective breathing-mode oscillations in a harmonic trap and collisional dynamics in the Newton's cradle setting involving real-time evolution in a periodic Bragg potential.

Perpetual motion of a mobile impurity in a one-dimensional quantum gas

Oleg Valentinovich Lychkovskiy

Consider an impurity particle injected in a degenerate one-dimensional gas of noninteracting fermions (or, equivalently, Tonks-Girardeau bosons) with some initial momentum ${p}_{0}$. We examine the infinite-time value of the momentum of the impurity, ${p}_{\ensuremath{\infty}}$, as a function of ${p}_{0}$. A lower bound on $|{p}_{\ensuremath{\infty}}({p}_{0})|$ is derived under fairly general conditions. The derivation, based on the existence of the lower edge of the spectrum of the host gas, does not resort to any approximations. The existence of such bound implies the perpetual motion of the impurity in a one-dimensional gas of noninteracting fermions or Tonks-Girardeau bosons at zero temperature. The bound admits an especially simple and useful form when the interaction between the impurity and host particles is everywhere repulsive.

From multiple integrals to Fredholm determinants

Alexander Seel, Frank Göhmann, Andreas Klümper +1 more

We consider a multiple integral representation for the finite temperature density-density correlation functions of the one-dimensional Bose gas with delta function interaction in the limits of infinite and vanishing repulsion. In the former case a known Fredholm determinant is recovered. In the latter case a similar expression appears with permanents replacing determinants.

Correlation Functions for Impenetrable Bosons. The Determinant Representation

V. E. Korepin, N. M. Bogoliubov, Anatoli G. Izergin

Introduction Impenetrable bosons in one space dimension are a special case (at coupling constant c → ∞) of the one-dimensional Bose gas (NS model) considered in detail in Chapter I. The results obtained there for the NS model can be specialized to the case of impenetrable bosons. It is to be said that all the formulæe are considerably simplified in this case. From the point of view of physics this is due to the fact that the δ-function potentials in the N -particle Hamiltonian (I.1.11) are now infinitely strong and the bosons cannot penetrate one another, so that the wave function should be equal to zero if the bosons' coordinates coincide. In this respect impenetrable bosons are rather similar to free fermions (see Appendix I.I). In this chapter correlation functions of impenetrable bosons are considered and their representations as Fredholm determinants of linear integral operators are given. The (very essential) simplification with respect to the general case is due to the fact that now all the auxiliary quantum fields can be set equal to zero (see IX.6), so that the kernels of these operators do not contain quantum fields. The determinant representation for the time-dependent correlator is easy to obtain in this case. Temperature correlation functions are considered as well as zero temperature ones.
