Topological order in the Kitaev/Majorana chain in the presence of disorder and interactions

Abstract

We study the combined effect of interactions and disorder on topological order in one dimension. Toward that end, we consider a generalized Kitaev chain including fermion-fermion interactions and disorder in the chemical potential. We determine the phase diagram by performing density-matrix renormalization-group calculations on the corresponding spin-1/2 chain. We find that moderate disorder or repulsive interactions individually stabilize the topological order, which remains valid for their combined effect. However, both repulsive and attractive interactions lead to a suppression of the topological phase at strong disorder.

Density matrix renormalization group study of the interacting Kitaev chain with quasi-periodic disorder

Kevin S.C. Decker, Christoph Karrasch

Abstract We document the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional Kitaev chain with quasi-periodic disorder in the presence of two-body interactions. Our data were obtained for systems of $$L=1000$$ L = 1000 sites using large-scale density-matrix renormalization group numerics and is benchmarked against known results for the clean system. We demonstrate that moderate quasi-periodic disorder stabilizes the topological phase both for repulsive and attractive interactions. For larger disorder strengths, the system features re-entrance behavior and multiple phase transitions. Robustness of Majorana edge modes and topological order: Exact results for the symmetric interacting Kitaev chain with disorder

Max McGinley, Johannes Knolle, Andreas Nunnenkamp

We investigate the robustness of Majorana edge modes under disorder and interactions. We exploit a recently found mapping of the interacting Kitaev chain in the symmetric region ($\ensuremath{\mu}=0, t=\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$) to free fermions. Extending the exact solution to the disordered case allows us to calculate analytically the topological phase boundary for all interaction and disorder strengths, which has been thought to be only accessible numerically. We discover a regime in which moderate disorder in the interaction matrix elements enhances topological order well into the strongly interacting regime $U>t$. We also derive the explicit form of the many-body Majorana edge wave function, revealing how it is dressed by many-particle fluctuations from interactions. The qualitative features of our analytical results are valid beyond the fine-tuned integrable point, as expected from the robustness of topological order and as corroborated here by an exact diagonalization study of small systems.

Phase diagram and entanglement of two interacting topological Kitaev chains

Loïc Herviou, Christophe Mora, Karyn Le Hur

A superconducting wire described by a $p$-wave pairing and a Kitaev Hamiltonian exhibits Majorana fermions at its edges and is topologically protected by symmetry. We consider two Kitaev wires (chains) coupled by a Coulomb-type interaction and study the complete phase diagram using analytical and numerical techniques. A topological superconducting phase with four Majorana fermions occurs until moderate interactions between chains. For large interactions, both repulsive and attractive, by analogy with the Hubbard model, we identify Mott phases with Ising-type magnetic order. For repulsive interactions, the Ising antiferromagnetic order favors the occurrence of orbital currents spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry. By strongly varying the chemical potentials of the two chains, quantum phase transitions towards fully polarized (empty or full) fermionic chains occur. In the Kitaev model, the quantum critical point separating the topological superconducting phase and the polarized phase belongs to the universality class of the critical Ising model in two dimensions. When increasing the Coulomb interaction between chains, then we identify an additional phase corresponding to two critical Ising theories (or two chains of Majorana fermions). We confirm the existence of such a phase from exact mappings and from the concept of bipartite fluctuations. We show the existence of negative logarithmic corrections in the bipartite fluctuations, as a reminiscence of the quantum critical point in the Kitaev model. Other entanglement probes such as bipartite entropy and entanglement spectrum are also used to characterize the phase diagram. The limit of large interactions can be reached in an equivalent setup of ultracold atoms and Josephson junctions.

Effect of Interaction on the Majorana Zero Modes in the Kitaev Chain at Half Filling

Zhidan Li, Qiang Han

The one-dimensional interacting Kitaev chain at half filling is studied. The symmetry of the Hamiltonian is examined by dual transformations, and various physical quantities as a function of the fermion-fermion interaction U are calculated systematically using the density matrix renormalization group method. A special value of interaction U p is revealed in the topological region of the phase diagram. We show that at U p the ground states are strictly two-fold degenerate even though the chain length is finite and the zero-energy peak due to the Majorana zero modes is maximally enhanced and exactly localized at the end sites. Here U p may be attractive or repulsive depending on other system parameters. We also give a qualitative understanding of the effect of interaction under the self-consistent mean field framework.

Interaction effects in topological superconducting wires supporting Majorana fermions

Edwin Miles Stoudenmire, Jason Alicea, Oleg A. Starykh +1 more

Among the broad spectrum of systems predicted to exhibit topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions, one-dimensional wires with strong spin-orbit coupling provide one of the most promising experimental candidates. Here we investigate the fate of the topological superconducting phase in such wires when repulsive interactions are present. Using a combination of density matrix renormalization group, bosonization, and Hartree--Fock techniques, we demonstrate that while interactions degrade the bulk gap---consistent with recent results of Gangadharaiah et al.---they also greatly expand the parameter range over which the topological phase arises. In particular, we show that with interactions this phase can be accessed over a broader chemical potential window, thereby leading to greater immunity against disorder-induced chemical potential fluctuations in the wire. We also suggest that in certain wires strong interactions may allow Majorana fermions to be generated without requiring a magnetic field.

Majorana zero modes and long range edge correlation in interacting Kitaev chains: analytic solutions and density-matrix-renormalization-group study

Jian-Jian Miao, Hui-Ke Jin, Fu‐Chun Zhang +1 more

We study Kitaev model in one-dimension with open boundary condition by using exact analytic methods for non-interacting system at zero chemical potential as well as in the symmetric case of Δ = t, and by using density-matrix-renormalization-group method for interacting system with nearest neighbor repulsion interaction. We suggest and examine an edge correlation function of Majorana fermions to characterize the long range order in the topological superconducting states and study the phase diagram of the interating Kitaev chain.
