Abstract

We present the experimental measurement of a squeezed vacuum state by means of a bichromatic local oscillator (BLO). A pair of local oscillators at ±5 MHz around the central frequency ω(0) of the fundamental field with equal power are generated by three acousto-optic modulators and phase-locked technology and used as a BLO. The squeezed vacuum light is detected by a phase-sensitive balanced-homodyne detection with a BLO. The baseband signal around ω(0) combined with a broad squeezed field can be detected with the sensitivity below the shot-noise limit, in which the baseband signal is shifted to the vicinity of 5 MHz (the half of the BLO separation). This work has important applications in quantum state measurement and quantum information.

Enhanced detection of a low-frequency signal by using broad squeezed light and a bichromatic local oscillator

We experimentally study a protocol of using the broadband high-frequency squeezed vacuum to detect the low-frequency signal. In this scheme, the lower sideband field of the squeezed light carries the low-frequency modulation signal, and the two strong coherent light fields are applied as the bichromatic local oscillator in the homodyne detection to measure the quantum entanglement of the upper and lower sideband for the broadband squeezed light. The power of one of the local oscillators for detecting the upper sideband can be adjusted to optimize the conditional variance in the low-frequency regime by subtracting the photocurrent of the upper sideband field of the squeezed light from that of the lower sideband field. By means of the quantum correlation of the upper and lower sideband for the broadband squeezed light, the low-frequency signal beyond the standard quantum limit is measured. This scheme is appropriate for enhancing the sensitivity of the low-frequency signal by the aid of the broad squeezed light, such as gravitational waves detection, and does not need to directly produce the low-frequency squeezing in an optical parametric process.

Observation of a comb of squeezed states with a strong squeezing factor by a bichromatic local oscillator

Shaoping Shi, Yajun Wang, Long Tian +3 more

We demonstrate the experimental detection of an optical squeezing covering several higher resonances of the optical parametric amplifier (OPA) by adopting a bichromatic local oscillator (BLO). The BLO is generated from a waveguide electro-optic phase modulator (WGM) and subsequent optical mode cleaner (OMC), without the need of additional power balance and phase control. The WGM is used for generating the frequency-shifted sideband beams with equal power and certain phase difference, and the OMC is used for filtering the unwanted optical modes. Among a measurement frequency range from 0 to 16.64 GHz, the maximum squeezing factors are superior to 10 dB below the shot noise limit for the first three discrete odd-order resonances of the OPA.

Generation and Measurement of Squeezed Vacuum States at Audio-Band Frequencies

Yinghao Gao, Jinxia Feng, Yuanji Li +1 more

Squeezed vacuum states at audio-band frequencies are important quantum resources for practical applications. We demonstrated the generation of squeezed vacuum states at the audio-band frequencies from a subthreshold optical parametric oscillator with a periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal pumped by a homemade continuous wave single-frequency dual-wavelength laser. To detect squeezed vacuum states at audio-band frequencies, the influences of the local oscillator (LO) power, the common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of balanced homodyne detectors, and the phase jitter between the LO and squeezed vacuum field on the measurement of squeezed vacuum states at audio-band frequencies were considered. By optimizing the LO power, improving the CMRR of photodetectors to 67 dB based on the design of differential fine-tuning circuit and adjustable bias voltage, and reducing the phase jitter between the LO and squeezed vacuum field to 1.7° with the help of the coherent locking technique, 6.1 ± 0.3 dB squeezed vacuum states at audio frequencies from 5 kHz to 20 kHz were generated. A 3.0 ± 0.3 dB phase squeezed vacuum state was obtained at the audio frequency of 3.5 kHz.

Coherent control of broadband vacuum squeezing

We present the observation of optical fields carrying squeezed vacuum states at sideband frequencies from $10\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{Hz}$ to above $35\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$. The field was generated with type-I optical parametric oscillation below threshold at $1064\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$. A coherent, unbalanced classical modulation field at $40\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$ enabled the generation of error signals for stable phase control of the squeezed vacuum field with respect to a strong local oscillator. Broadband squeezing of approximately $\ensuremath{-}4\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{dB}$ was measured with balanced homodyne detection. The spectrum of the squeezed field allows a quantum noise reduction of ground-based gravitational wave detectors over their full detection band, regardless of whether homodyne readout or radio-frequency heterodyne readout is used.

Bichromatic local oscillator for detection of two-mode squeezed states of light

Alberto M. Marino, Carlos R. Stroud, Vincent Wong +2 more

We present a new technique for the detection of two-mode squeezed states of light that allows for a simple characterization of these quantum states even for arbitrary frequency separation between the modes. The proposed technique is based on the use of a bichromatic field as the local oscillator in a balanced heterodyne measurement scheme. By the proper selection of the frequencies of the bichromatic field, it is possible to arbitrarily select the frequency around which the squeezing information is located, thus making it possible to use a low-bandwidth detection system and to move away from any excess noise present in the system.

Phase locking of squeezed vacuum generated by a single-pass optical parametric amplifier

Yoshitaka Taguchi, Kenichi Oguchi, Zicong Xu +5 more

In high-precision optical measurements, squeezed vacuum states are a promising resource for reducing the shot noise. To utilize a squeezed vacuum, it is important to lock the phase of the local oscillator (LO) to the squeezed light. The coherent control sideband (CCSB) scheme has been established for the precise phase locking, while the previous CCSB scheme was designed for the squeezed vacuum generated with an optical parametric oscillator (OPO). Thus the previous CCSB scheme is not applicable to squeezing by a single-pass optical parametric amplifier (OPA), which is attractive for generating broadband squeezed vacuum states. In this study, we propose a variant of CCSB scheme, which is applicable to the squeezing by single-pass OPA. In this scheme, we inject pump light and frequency-shifted signal light into an OPA crystal in the same way as the previous CCSB scheme. The parametric process in the OPA crystal generates a squeezed vacuum, amplifies the signal light, generates an idler light, and causes the pump depletion reflecting the interference of the amplified signal light and the idler light. Through the lock-in detection of the pump depletion, we can phase-lock the injected signal light to the pump light. Then, after the heterodyne detection of the signal and the idler light, we get the error signal of LO and realize the precise phase locking of LO to the squeezed quadrature. We show the feasibility of the proposed scheme by deriving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the modulated pump signal. We experimentally demonstrate the proposed scheme on pulsed squeezing by a single-pass OPA.
