Abstract

We analyze the properties of a non-Abelian spin-one chiral spin liquid state proposed by Greiter and Thomale [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 207203 (2009)] using Monte Carlo. In this state the bosonic $\ensuremath{\nu}=1$ Moore-Read Pfaffian wave function is used to describe a gas of bosonic spin flips on a square lattice with one flux quantum per plaquette. For toroidal geometries there is a three-dimensional space of these states corresponding to the topological degeneracy of the bosonic Moore-Read state on the torus. We show that spin correlations for different states in this space become indistinguishable for large system size. We also calculate the Renyi entanglement entropy for different system partitions to extract the topological entanglement entropy and provide evidence that the topological order of the lattice spin-liquid state is the same as that of the continuum Moore-Read state from which it is constructed.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

Yixuan Huang, Wei Kang Zhu, Shou-Shu Gong +2 more

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings ${J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Topological entanglement entropy of Z2 spin liquids and lattice Laughlin states

Yi Zhang, Tarun Grover, Ashvin Vishwanath

We study entanglement properties of candidate wave functions for SU(2) symmetric gapped spin liquids and Laughlin states. These wave functions are obtained by the Gutzwiller projection technique. Using topological entanglement entropy $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ as a tool, we establish topological order in chiral spin liquid and ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquid wave functions, as well as a lattice version of the Laughlin state. Our results agree very well with the field theoretic result $\ensuremath{\gamma}=\mathrm{log}D$ where $D$ is the total quantum dimension of the phase. All calculations are done using a Monte Carlo technique on a $12\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}12$ lattice enabling us to extract $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ with small finite-size effects. For a chiral spin liquid wave function, the calculated value is within $4%$ of the ideal value. We also find good agreement for a lattice version of the Laughlin $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/3$ phase with the expected $\ensuremath{\gamma}=\mathrm{log}\sqrt{3}$.

Non-Abelian chiral spin liquid in a spin-111 antiferromagnet on the square lattice

Xiao-Tian Zhang, Yuan Yang, D. N. Sheng +1 more

Non-Abelian chiral spin liquids (CSLs) host non-Abelian anyon excitations and are promising platforms for topological quantum computation. However, realizing non-Abelian CSLs in short-range interacting spin systems remains elusive. Here, we study a spin-$1$ square-lattice model with the first- and second-neighbor bilinear ($J_1,J_2$) and biquadratic interactions ($K_1,K_2$), as well as the three-spin scalar chiral coupling $J_χ$. Inspired by the evidence of the Moore-Read state in exact diagonalization and infinite Projected Entangled Pair States calculations, we fix $J_1=1.0$, $J_2/J_1=0.623$, $K_1/J_1=-0.176$, and obtain a quantum phase diagram for $0 \leq K_2/J_1 \leq 0.4$ and $0.3 \leq J_χ/J_1 \leq 0.6$ by using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. We identify a stripe antiferromagnetic phase, a Néel antiferromagnetic phase, a magnetically ordered chiral spin state phase, and a non-Abelian CSL phase emerging near the boundaries of the ordered phases. The unbiased DMRG results provide strong evidence for the Moore-Read state, including the three topological sectors, the quantized spin Chern number $C=1$, and the level counting of low-lying entanglement spectra which is consistent with the chiral SU(2)$_2$ conformal field theory. Our results may shed new light on searching for non-Abelian CSLs in other higher-spin ($S > 1/2$) systems with short-range couplings.

Resonating valence bond realization of spin-1 non-Abelian chiral spin liquid on the torus

Hua-Chen Zhang, Ying-Hai Wu, Hong-Hao Tu +1 more

We propose resonating valence bond wave functions for a spin-1 system on the torus that realize a non-Abelian chiral spin liquid. The wave functions take the form of infinite-dimensional matrix product states constructed from conformal blocks of the $\mathrm{SO}{(3)}_{1}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. This means that they are lattice analogs of the bosonic Moore-Read state introduced in fractional quantum Hall systems. The topological order of this system is revealed by explicit construction of threefold-degenerate ground states and analytical computation of the modular $S$ and $T$ matrices.

Non-Abelian chiral spin liquid in a quantum antiferromagnet revealed by an iPEPS study

Ji-Yao Chen, Laurens Vanderstraeten, Sylvain Capponi +1 more

Abelian and non-Abelian topological phases exhibiting protected chiral edge modes are ubiquitous in the realm of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect. Here, we investigate a spin-1 Hamiltonian on the square lattice which could, potentially, host the spin liquid analog of the (bosonic) non-Abelian Moore-Read FQH state, as suggested by exact diagonalization of small clusters. Using families of fully SU(2)-spin symmetric and translationally invariant chiral projected entangled pair states (PEPS), variational energy optimization is performed using infinite-PEPS methods, providing good agreement with density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) results. A careful analysis of the bulk spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlation functions in the optimized spin liquid suggests that they exhibit long-range ``gossamer tails''. From the investigation of the entanglement spectrum, we observe sharply defined chiral edge modes following the prediction of the SU(2)${}_{2}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theory and exhibiting a conformal field theory (CFT) central charge $c=3/2$, as expected for a Moore-Read chiral spin liquid. Using the PEPS bulk-edge correspondence, we argue the ``weak'' criticality of the bulk is in fact a finite-$D$ artifact of the chiral PEPS, which quickly becomes (practically) irrelevant as the PEPS bond dimension $D$ is increased. We conclude that the PEPS formalism offers an unbiased and efficient method to investigate non-Abelian chiral spin liquids in quantum antiferromagnets.

Full characterization of a spin liquid phase: from topological entropy to robustness and braid statistics

Saeed S. Jahromi, A. Langari

Abstract We use the topological entanglement entropy (TEE) as an efficient tool to fully characterize the Abelian phase of a Z 2 × Z 2 spin liquid emerging as the ground state of topological color code (TCC), which is a class of stabilizer states on the honeycomb lattice. We provide the fusion rules of the quasiparticle (QP) excitations of the model by introducing single- or two-body operators on physical spins for each fusion process which justify the corresponding fusion outcome. Besides this, we extract the TEE from Renyi entanglement entropy (EE) of the TCC, analytically and numerically by finite size exact diagonalization on the disk shape regions with contractible boundaries. We obtain that the EE has a local contribution, which scales linearly with the boundary length in addition to a topological term, i.e. the TEE, arising from the condensation of closed strings in the ground state. We further investigate the ground state dependence of the TEE on regions with non-contractible boundaries, i.e. by cutting the torus to half cylinders, from which we further identify multiple independent minimum entropy states (MES) of the TCC and then extract the U and S modular matrices of the system, which contain the self and mutual statistics of the anyonic QPs and fully characterize the topological phase of the TCC. Eventually, we show that, in spite of the lack of a local order parameter, TEE and other physical quantities obtained from the ground state wave function such as the entanglement spectrum (ES) and ground state fidelity are sensitive probes to study the robustness of a topological phase. We find that the topological order in the presence of a magnetic field persists until the vicinity of the transition point, where the TEE and fidelity drops to zero and the ES splits severely, signaling breakdown of the topological phase of the TCC.
