Mutually unbiased product bases for multiple qudits

Abstract

We investigate the interplay between mutual unbiasedness and product bases for multiple qudits of possibly different dimensions. A product state of such a system is shown to be mutually unbiased to a product basis only if each of its factors is mutually unbiased to all the states which occur in the corresponding factors of the product basis. This result implies both a tight limit on the number of mutually unbiased product bases which the system can support and a complete classification of mutually unbiased product bases for multiple qubits or qutrits. In addition, only maximally entangled states can be mutually unbiased to a maximal set of mutually unbiased product bases.

Mutually unbiased maximally entangled bases from difference matrices

Abstract Based on maximally entangled states, we explore the constructions of mutually unbiased bases in bipartite quantum systems. We present a new way to construct mutually unbiased bases by difference matrices in the theory of combinatorial designs. In particular, we establish q mutually unbiased bases with q − 1 maximally entangled bases and one product basis in C q ⊗ C q for arbitrary prime power q . In addition, we construct maximally entangled bases for dimension of composite numbers of non-prime power, such as five maximally entangled bases in C 12 ⊗ C 12 and C 21 ⊗ C 21 , which improve the known lower bounds for d = 3 m , with (3, m ) = 1 in C d ⊗ C d . Furthermore, we construct p + 1 mutually unbiased bases with p maximally entangled bases and one product basis in C p ⊗ C p 2 for arbitrary prime number p .

Mutually Unbiased Product Bases

Daniel McNulty

A pair of orthonormal bases are mutually unbiased (MU) if the inner products across all their elements have equal magnitude. In quantum mechanics, these bases represent observables that are complementary, i.e. a measurement of one observable implies maximal uncertainty about the possible outcome of a subsequent measurement of a second observable. MU bases have attracted interest in recent years because their properties seem to depend dramatically on the dimension d of the quantum system in hand. If the dimension is given by a prime or prime-power, the state space is known to accommodate a complete set of d+1 MU bases. However, for composite dimensions, such as d = 6, 10, 12, ..., complete sets seem to be absent and it is not understood why. In this thesis we carry out a comprehensive study of MU product bases in dimension six. In particular, we construct all MU bases in dimension six consisting of product states only. The exhaustive classification leads to several non-existence results. We also present a new construction of complex Hadamard matrices of composite order, which is a consequence of our work on MU product bases. Based on this construction we obtain several new isolated Hadamard matrices of Butson-type. \n

All mutually unbiased product bases in dimension 6

Daniel McNulty, Stefan Weigert

All mutually unbiased bases in dimension 6 consisting of product states only are constructed. Several continuous families of pairs and two triples of mutually unbiased product bases are found to exist but no quadruple. The exhaustive classification leads to a proof that a complete set of seven mutually unbiased bases, if it exists, cannot contain a triple of mutually unbiased product bases.

On mutually unbiased bases

Rahim Taghikhani

Two orthonormal bases in the complex space of dimension d, are said to be mutually unbiased if the square of the magnitude of the inner product of any vector from one basis with any vector in other basis is equal to the reciprocal of the dimension d. Mutually unbiased bases are used for optimal state determination of mixed quantum states. It is known that in any dimension d, the number of mutually unbiased bases is at most d+1. Ivanovic found a complete set of mutually unbiased bases for prime dimensions. His construction was generalized by Wootters and Fields for prime power dimensions. There is a strong connection between maximally commuting bases of orthogonal unitary matrices and mutually unbiased bases. Based on this connection, there exits a constructive proof of the existence of a complete set of mutually unbiased bases for prime power dimensions. This thesis is an exploration on construction of mutually unbiased bases.

ON MUTUALLY UNBIASED BASES

Thomas Durt, Berthold‐Georg Englert, Ingemar Bengtsson +1 more

Mutually unbiased bases for quantum degrees of freedom are central to all theoretical investigations and practical exploitations of complementary properties. Much is known about mutually unbiased bases, but there are also a fair number of important questions that have not been answered in full as yet. In particular, one can find maximal sets of N + 1 mutually unbiased bases in Hilbert spaces of prime-power dimension N = p M , with p prime and M a positive integer, and there is a continuum of mutually unbiased bases for a continuous degree of freedom, such as motion along a line. But not a single example of a maximal set is known if the dimension is another composite number (N = 6, 10, 12,…). In this review, we present a unified approach in which the basis states are labeled by numbers 0, 1, 2, …, N - 1 that are both elements of a Galois field and ordinary integers. This dual nature permits a compact systematic construction of maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases when they are known to exist but throws no light on the open existence problem in other cases. We show how to use the thus constructed mutually unbiased bases in quantum-informatics applications, including dense coding, teleportation, entanglement swapping, covariant cloning, and state tomography, all of which rely on an explicit set of maximally entangled states (generalizations of the familiar two–q-bit Bell states) that are related to the mutually unbiased bases. There is a link to the mathematics of finite affine planes. We also exploit the one-to-one correspondence between unbiased bases and the complex Hadamard matrices that turn the bases into each other. The ultimate hope, not yet fulfilled, is that open questions about mutually unbiased bases can be related to open questions about Hadamard matrices or affine planes, in particular the notorious existence problem for dimensions that are not a power of a prime. The Hadamard-matrix approach is instrumental in the very recent advance, surveyed here, of our understanding of the N = 6 situation. All evidence indicates that a maximal set of seven mutually unbiased bases does not exist — one can find no more than three pairwise unbiased bases — although there is currently no clear-cut demonstration of the case.
