Abstract

We consider a geometrically frustrated spin-(1/2) Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain, which is an exactly solvable model when assuming part of the exchange interactions as Heisenberg ones and another part as Ising ones. A small XY part is afterwards perturbatively added to the Ising couplings, which enabled us to derive an effective Hamiltonian describing the low-energy behavior of the modified but full quantum version of the initial model. The effective model is much simpler and free of frustration. It is shown that the XY part added to the originally Ising interaction gives rise to the spin-liquid phase with continuously varying magnetization, which emerges between the magnetization plateaus and is totally absent in the initial hybrid diamond-chain model. The elaborated approach can also be applied to other hybrid Ising-Heisenberg spin systems.

Geometric frustration in the class of exactly solvable Ising–Heisenberg diamond chains

Lucia Čanová, Jozef Strečka, M. Jaščur

Ground-state and finite-temperature properties of the mixed spin- and spin- S Ising–Heisenberg diamond chains are examined within an exact analytical approach based on the generalized decoration–iteration map. A particular emphasis is laid on the investigation of the effect of geometric frustration, which is generated by the competition between Heisenberg- and Ising-type exchange interactions. It is found that an interplay between the geometric frustration and quantum effects gives rise to several quantum ground states with entangled spin states in addition to some semi-classically ordered ones. Among the most interesting results to emerge from our study one could mention rigorous evidence for quantized plateaux in magnetization curves, an appearance of the round minimum in the thermal dependence of susceptibility times temperature data, double-peak zero-field specific heat curves, or an enhanced magnetocaloric effect when the frustration comes into play. The triple-peak specific heat curve is also detected when applying small external field to the system driven by the frustration into the disordered state.

Spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg distorted diamond chain with antiferromagnetic Ising and ferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions

Bohdan Lisnyi

The exactly solvable spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg distorted diamond chain in the presence of the external magnetic field is investigated for the case of antiferromagnetic Ising and ferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg interactions. The influence of quantum fluctuations and the distortion on the ground state, magnetic and thermal properties of the model are studied in detail. In particular, it is established that the zero-temperature magnetization curve may involve intermediate plateaus just at zero and 1/3 of the saturation magnetization. It is demonstrated that the temperature dependence of the specific heat reveals up to four distinct peaks at zero magnetic field and up to five distinct peaks at a weak magnetic field. The physical origin of all observed additional peaks of the specific heat has been clarified on the grounds of dominating thermal excitations. We have shown that the quantum fluctuations give rise to an effective geometrical frustration in this chain.

Spin-1/2 asymmetric diamond Ising-Heisenberg chain

B. M. Lisnii

The ground state and the thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 asymmetric diamond Ising--Heisenberg chain are considered. For the $XYZ$ anisotropic Heisenberg interaction, the exact calculations of the free energy, entropy, heat capacity, magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility are performed using the method of decoration-iteration transformation. In the case of antiferromagnetic interactions (Ising and $XXZ$ anisotropic Heisenberg ones), the ground state, magnetization process, temperature dependence of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity are investigated. The influence of geometric frustration and quantum fluctuations on these characteristics is studied.

Multiple frustration-induced plateaus in a magnetization process of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain

Jozef Strečka, L Čanová, T. Lučivjanský +1 more

Magnetization process of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain is examined by combining three exact analytical techniques: Kambe projection method, decoration-iteration transformation and transfer-matrix method. Multiple frustration-induced plateaus in a magnetization process of this geometrically frustrated system are found provided that a relative ratio between the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg- and Ising-type interactions exceeds some particular value. By contrast, there is just a single magnetization plateau if the frustrating Heisenberg interaction is sufficiently small compared to the Ising one.

Exactly solvable mixed-spin Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with biquadratic interactions and single-ion anisotropy

Onofre Rojas, S. M. de Souza, Vadim Ohanyan +1 more

An exactly solvable variant of a mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain is considered. Vertical spin-1 dimers are taken as quantum ones with Heisenberg bilinear and biquadratic interactions and with single-ion anisotropy, while all interactions between spin-1 and spin-1/2 residing on the intermediate sites are taken in the Ising form. The detailed analysis of the $T=0$ ground-state phase diagram is presented. The phase diagrams have been shown to be rather rich, demonstrating a large variety of ground states: a saturated one, three ferrimagnetic ones with magnetization equal to 3/5, and another four ferrimagnetic ground states with magnetization equal to 1/5. There are also two frustrated macroscopically degenerated ground states that could exist at zero magnetic filed. Solving the model exactly within a classical transfer-matrix formalism we obtain exact expressions for all thermodynamic functions of the system. The thermodynamic properties of the model have been described exactly by exact calculation of the partition function within the direct classical transfer-matrix formalism.

Ground-state and magnetization behavior of the frustrated spin-1/2 antisymmetric diamond chain

Yang Zhao, Qi Yan, An Du +5 more

The low-dimensional quantum spin systems have been extensively studied in the past three decades due to the novel ground states and rich magnetic behaviors, especially the quantum spin chain with diamond topology structure. Motivated by recent experimental success in Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 compound, which is regarded as a model material of spin-1/2 diamond chain, researchers have paid a lot of attention to various variants of diamond spin chains. In this paper,we mainly examine the magnetic properties of an antisymmetric spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the secondneighbor interaction between nodal spins.By using exact diagonalization and transfer-matrix methods, the ground-state phase diagram, magnetization behavior and macroscopic thermodynamics are exactly solved for the particular case that all magnetic bonds yield antiferromagnetic couplings, which usually shows the most interesting magnetic features closely related to a striking interplay between geometric frustration and quantum fluctuations. To clearly illustrate the effect of second-neighbor interaction item,we consider a highly frustrated situation that all Ising-Heisenberg bonds and Heisenberg bonds possess the same interaction strength. The calculation results indicate that the second-neighbor interaction item will enrich ground states and magnetization plateaus.A classical ferrimagnetic phase FRI1 corresponding to a novel two-thirds of intermediate plateau with translationally broken symmetry is introduced, manifesting itself as up-up-up-down-up-up spin configuration at a ground-state.In addition, there are other four distinct ground states which can be identified from the phase diagram,i.e.,one saturated paramagnetic phase SP,one classical ferrimagnetic phase FRI2,one quantum ferrimagnetic phase QFI and the unique quantum antiferromagnetic phase QAF.The classical phase FRI2 and quantum phase QFI both generate one-third of magnetization plateau. It is worth mentioning that all the values of these magnetization plateaus satisfy the Oshikawa-Yamanaka-Affleck condition.Besides, the results also have shown a rich variety of temperature dependence of total magnetization and specific heat. The magnetization displays the remarkable thermal-induced changes as the external field is sufficiently close to critical value where two or more than two different ground states coexist. At the critical field relevant to a coexistence of two different states, the total magnetization displays a monotonic decrease trend. The thermal dependence of zero-field specific heat displays relative complex variations for different second-neighbor interactions between nodal spins. At first, the specific heat presents only a single rounded Schottky-type maximum.Using the second-neighbor interaction, another sharp peak arises at low-temperature and is superimposed on this round maximum, and the specific heat exhibits a double-peak structure. On further strengthening, the low-temperature one keeps its height shifting towards high temperature, while the hightemperature round peak suffers great enhancement and moves in an opposite direction. Finally, the low temperature peak entirely merges with the Schottky-type peak at a certain value of second-neighbor interaction, and above this value, the specific curve recovers its single peak structure. The observed double-peak specific heat curves mainly originate from thermal excitations between the ground-state spin configuration QAF and the ones close enough in energy to the ground state.
