Abstract

We study the performance of two measures of non-Markovianity in detecting memory effects in two-qubit dephasing channels. By combining independent Markovian and non-Markovian noise on the qubits, our results show that the trace distance measure is able to detect the memory effects when at least one of the local channels displays non-Markovianity. A measure based on channel capacity, in turn, becomes nonzero when the global two-qubit dynamics shows memory effects. We apply these schemes to a well-known superdense coding protocol and demonstrate an optimal noise configuration to maximize the information transmission with independent local noises.

Non-Markovian dynamics in quantum optical dephasing channels

Henri Lyyra

Quantum computation and quantum communication are two of the most promising future applications of quantum mechanics. Since the information carriers used in both of them are essentially open quantum systems it is necessary to understand both quantum information theory and the theory of open quantum systems in order to investigate realistic implementations of such quantum technologies. In this thesis we consider the theory of open quantum systems from a quantum information theory perspective. The thesis is divided into two parts: review of the literature and original research. In the review of literature we present some important definitions and known results of open quantum systems and quantum information theory. We present the definitions of trace distance, two channel capacities and superdense coding capacity and give a reasoning why they can be used to represent the transmission efficiency of a communication channel. We also show derivations of some properties useful to link completely positive and trace preserving maps to trace distance and channel capacities. With the help of these properties we construct three measures of non-Markovianity and explain why they detect non-Markovianity. In the original research part of the thesis we study the non-Markovian dynamics in an experimentally realized quantum optical set-up. For general one-qubit dephasing channels we calculate the explicit forms of the two channel capacities and the superdense coding capacity. For the general two-qubit dephasing channel with uncorrelated local noises we calculate the explicit forms of the quantum capacity and the mutual information of a four-letter encoding. By using the dynamics in the experimental implementation as a set of specific dephasing channels we also calculate and compare the measures in one- and two-qubit dephasing channels and study the options of manipulating the environment to achieve revivals and higher transmission rates in superdense coding protocol with dephasing noise. Oman tutkimuksen osiossa tutkimme epä-Markovista dynamiikkaa kokeellisesti toteutetussa kvanttioptisessa mittausjärjestelyssä.

Optimal superdense coding capacity in the non-Markovian regime

Y. Aiache, Saif M. Al-Kuwari, K. El Anouz +1 more

Abstract Superdense coding (SDC) is a significant technique widely used in quantum information processing. Indeed, it consists of sending two bits of classical information using a single qubit, leading to faster and more efficient quantum communication. In this paper, we propose a model to evaluate the effect of backflow information in a SDC protocol through a non-Markovian dynamics. The model considers a qubit interacting with a structured Markovian environment. In order to generate a non-Markovian dynamic, an auxiliary qubit contacts a Markovian reservoir in such a way that the non-Markovian regime can be induced. By varying the coupling strength between the central qubit and the auxiliary qubit, the two dynamical regimes can be switched interchangeably. An enhancement in non-Markovian effects corresponds to an increase in this coupling strength. Furthermore, we conduct an examination of various parameters, namely temperature weight, and decoherence parameters in order to explore the behaviors of SDC, quantum fisher information (QFI), and local quantum uncertainty using an exact calculation. The obtained results show a significant relationship between non-classical correlations and QFI since they behave similarly, allowing them to detect what is beyond entanglement. In addition, the presence of non-classical correlations enables us to detect the optimal SDC capacity in a non-Markovian regime.

Experimental demonstration of efficient superdense coding in the presence of non-Markovian noise

Bi‐Heng Liu, Xiao‐Min Hu, Yun‐Feng Huang +7 more

Many quantum information tasks rely on entanglement, which is used as a resource, for example, to enable efficient and secure communication. Typically, noise, accompanied by loss of entanglement, reduces the efficiency of quantum protocols. We demonstrate experimentally a superdense coding scheme with noise, where the decrease of entanglement in Alice's encoding state does not reduce the efficiency of the information transmission. Having almost fully dephased classical two-photon polarization state at the time of encoding, we reach values of mutual information close to 1.52 (1.89) with 3-state (4-state) encoding. This high efficiency relies both on non-Markovian features, that Bob exploits just before his Bell-state measurement, and on very high visibility (99.6$\%$) of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference within the experimental set-up. Our proof-of-principle results pave the way for exploiting non-Markovianity to improve the efficiency and security of quantum information processing tasks.

Characterizing Two‐Qubit Non‐Classical Correlations and Non‐Locality in Mixed Local Dephasing Noisy Channels

Atta Ur Rahman, Youssef Khedif, Muhammad Javed +2 more

Abstract The dephasing effects of two independent local mixed static‐Ornstein Uhlenbeck (STC‐OUK) noisy channels on the dynamics of two‐qubit non‐classical correlations, non‐locality, and entanglement are addressed. Here, i) local quantum Fisher information; ii) local quantum uncertainty; iii) uncertainty‐induced non‐locality; iv) Bell non‐locality; and v) negativity to quantify two‐qubit non‐classical correlations, non‐locality and entanglement, respectively, and their loss under the influence of mixed noise are used. The findings show that measure (i) compared to measure (ii) remains more effective in demonstrating non‐classical correlations. For the two‐qubit state with maximum purity, measure (iii) remains less fragile to the mixed STC‐OUK noise than measure (iv) but gets more vulnerable as the initial purity of the two‐qubit state falls. It is intriguing that measures (i), (ii), and (v) completely freeze after a particular interval, yet measures (iii) and (iv) remains partially preserved indefinitely. When compared to other two‐qubit correlation quantifiers, measure (v) exhibits non‐Markovian behavior and the phenomenon of sudden death and birth. Markovian and non‐Markovian dynamical maps, and extended two‐qubit correlations, can be induced by optimizing the current configuration. Finally, under the influence of mixed dephasing effects, robust and strengthened quantum correlations beyond entanglement in the two‐qubit Werner state is shown.

Superiority in dense coding through non-Markovian stochasticity

Abhishek Muhuri, Rivu Gupta, Srijon Ghosh +1 more

We investigate the distributed dense coding (DC) protocol, involving multiple senders and a single or two receivers under the influence of non-Markovian noise, acting on the encoded qubits transmitted from the senders to the receiver(s). We compare the effects of non-Markovianity on DC for both the dephasing and depolarizing channels. In the case of dephasing channels, we illustrate that for some classes of states, high non-Markovian strength can eradicate the negative influence of noisy channels which is not observed for depolarizing noise. Furthermore, we incorporate randomness into the noise models by replacing the Pauli matrices with random unitaries and demonstrate the constructive impact of stochastic noise models on the quenched averaged dense coding capacity. Interestingly, we report that the detrimental effect of non-Markovian depolarizing channels in the DC protocol can be eliminated when randomness is added to the channel.

Non-Markovianity through multipartite correlation measures

F. M. de Paula, Paola Concha Obando, M. S. Sarandy

We provide a characterization of memory effects in non-Markovian system-bath interactions from a quantum information perspective. More specifically, we establish sufficient conditions for which generalized measures of multipartite quantum, classical, and total correlations can be used to quantify the degree of non-Markovianity of a local quantum decohering process. We illustrate our results by considering the dynamical behavior of the trace-distance correlations in multiqubit systems under local dephasing and generalized amplitude damping.
