Abstract

Abstract Using a corner transfer matrix approach, we compute the bipartite entanglement Rényi entropy in the off-critical perturbations of non-unitary conformal minimal models realised by lattice spin chains Hamiltonians related to the Forrester–Baxter RSOS models (Bianchini et al 2015 J. Stat. Mech. P03010 ) in regime III. This allows to show on a set of explicit examples that the Rényi entropies for non-unitary theories rescale near criticality as the logarithm of the correlation length with a coefficient proportional to the effective central charge. This complements a similar result, recently established for the size rescaling at the critical point (Bianchini et al 2015 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 48 04FT01 ), showing the expected agreement of the two behaviours. We also compute the first subleading unusual correction to the scaling behaviour, showing that it is expressible in terms of expansions of various fractional powers of the correlation length, related to the differences between the conformal dimensions of fields in the theory and the minimal conformal dimension. Finally, a few observations on the limit leading to the off-critical logarithmic minimal models of Pearce and Seaton (2012 J. Stat. Mech. P09014 ) are put forward.

Entanglement entropy in integrable quantum systems

Davide Bianchini

In this thesis I present the results I have been developing during my PhD studies at City University London. The original results are based on D Bianchini et al, D Bianchini, O Castro-Alvaredo and B Doyon, D Bianchini and F Ravanini, D Bianchini et al and D Bianchini and O Castro-Alvaredo. In all but one publications, we compute the entanglement of various systems. Using the celebrated “replica trick” we compute the entanglement entropy of non unitary systems using integrable tools in continuum and discrete models. In particular, in the first article we generalise the method described in the seventh article in order to take into account non unitary conformal systems. In the second article we use a form factor expansion to probe a non unitary system outside the critical point. In the fourth article we derive the explicit expressions of one dimensional quantum Hamiltonians which provide a lattice realisation of off critical non unitary minimal models. Using a Corner Transfer Matrix approach we compute the scaling of the entanglement of such spin chains. In the fifth article we study the scaling of various twist field correlation functions in order to compute the entanglement entropy and the logarithmic negativity in free boson massive theories.

Entanglement entropy of non-unitary conformal field theory

D Bianchini, Olalla A. Castro-Alvaredo, B Doyon +2 more

Here we show that the Rényi entanglement entropy of a region of large size ℓ in a one-dimensional critical model whose ground state breaks conformal invariance (such as in those described by non-unitary conformal field theories), behaves as , where is the effective central charge, c (which may be negative) is the central charge of the conformal field theory and is the lowest holomorphic conformal dimension in the theory. We also obtain results for models with boundaries, and with a large but finite correlation length, and we show that if the lowest conformal eigenspace is logarithmic ( with N nilpotent), then there is an additional term proportional to . These results generalize the well known expressions for unitary models. We provide a general proof, and report on numerical evidence for a non-unitary spin chain and an analytical computation using the corner transfer matrix method for a non-unitary lattice model. We use a new algebraic technique for studying the branching that arises within the replica approach, and find a new expression for the entanglement entropy in terms of correlation functions of twist fields for non-unitary models.

Rényi entanglement entropy of critical SU(N) spin chains

Jonathan D’Emidio, Matthew S. Block, Ribhu K. Kaul

We present a study of the scaling behavior of the R\'enyi entanglement entropy (REE) in $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ spin chain Hamiltonians, in which all of the spins transform under the fundamental representation. These $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ spin chains are known to be quantum critical and described by a well known Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) nonlinear sigma model in the continuum limit. Numerical results from our lattice Hamiltonian are obtained using stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo for both closed and open boundary conditions. As expected for this 1D critical system, the REE shows a logarithmic dependence on the subsystem size with a prefactor given by the central charge of the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ WZW model. We study in detail the subleading oscillatory terms in the REE under both periodic and open boundaries. Each oscillatory term is associated with a WZW field and decays as a power law with an exponent proportional to the scaling dimension of the corresponding field. We find that the use of periodic boundaries (where oscillations are less prominent) allows for a better estimate of the central charge, while using open boundaries allows for a better estimate of the scaling dimensions. We also present numerical data on the thermal R\'enyi entropy which equally allows for extraction of the central charge.

Entanglement entropy of non-unitary integrable quantum field theory

Davide Bianchini, Olalla A. Castro-Alvaredo, Benjamin Doyon

In this paper we study the simplest massive 1+1 dimensional integrable quantum field theory which can be described as a perturbation of a non-unitary minimal conformal field theory: the Lee-Yang model. We are particularly interested in the features of the bi-partite entanglement entropy for this model and on building blocks thereof, namely twist field form factors. Non-unitarity selects out a new type of twist field as the operator whose two-point function (appropriately normalized) yields the entanglement entropy. We compute this two-point function both from a form factor expansion and by means of perturbed conformal field theory. We find good agreement with CFT predictions put forward in a recent work involving the present authors. In particular, our results are consistent with a scaling of the entanglement entropy given by $\frac{c_{\text{eff}}}{3}\log \ell$ where $c_{\text{eff}}$ is the effective central charge of the theory (a positive number related to the central charge) and $\ell$ is the size of the region. Furthermore the form factor expansion of twist fields allows us to explore the large region limit of the entanglement entropy and find the next-to-leading order correction to saturation. We find that this correction is very different from its counterpart in unitary models. Whereas in the latter case, it had a form depending only on few parameters of the model (the particle spectrum), it appears to be much more model-dependent for non-unitary models.

Correlation length and unusual corrections to entanglement entropy

Elisa Ercolessi, Stefano Evangelisti, Fabio Franchini +1 more

We study analytically the corrections to the leading terms in the R\'enyi entropy of a massive lattice theory, showing significant deviations from naive expectations. In particular, we show that finite size and finite mass effects give rise to different contributions (with different exponents) and thus violate a simple scaling argument. In the specific, we look at the entanglement entropy of a bipartite $XYZ$ spin-$1/2$ chain in its ground state. When the system is divided into two semi-infinite half-chains, we have an analytical expression of the R\'enyi entropy as a function of a single mass parameter. In the scaling limit, we show that the entropy as a function of the correlation length formally coincides with that of a bulk Ising model. This should be compared with the fact that, at criticality, the model is described by a $c=1$ conformal field theory and the corrections to the entropy due to finite size effects show exponents depending on the compactification radius of the theory. We will argue that there is no contradiction between these statements. If the lattice spacing is retained finite, the relation between the mass parameter and the correlation length generates new subleading terms in the entropy, whose form is path dependent in phase space and whose interpretation within a field theory is not available yet. These contributions arise as a consequence of the existence of stable bound states and are thus a distinctive feature of truly interacting theories, such as the $XYZ$ chain.

Corner entanglement scaling with projected entangled pair states

Chloé Van Bastelaere, Rui-Zhen Huang, Laurens Vanderstraeten

Entanglement scaling provides a powerful probe of universal properties at quantum critical points. In two dimensions, contributions originating from a corner-shaped bipartition exhibit a universal scaling, which is determined by the underlying conformal field theory. We develop a method to extract this corner entanglement entropy from projected entangled pair states directly in the thermodynamic limit. When applied to models at a quantum critical point, we show that the corner contribution exhibits scaling with the effective correlation length, in agreement with the hypothesis of finite-entanglement scaling. Our results for the corner coefficients are consistent with other methods, demonstrating the efficiency of our method for diagnosing strongly-correlated quantum critical points in two dimensions.
