Abstract

We consider an efficient scheme to simulate fermionic Hubbard models with nonlocal density-density interactions in two dimensions, based on bond-centered auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo. The simulations are shown to be sign-problem-free within a finite, restricted parameter range. Using this approach, we first study the Hubbard model on the half-filled square lattice bilayer, including an interlayer repulsion term in addition to the local repulsion, and present the ground-state phase diagram within the accessible parameter region. Starting from the antiferromagnetically ordered state in the absence of interlayer repulsion, the interlayer interactions are found to destabilize the antiferromagnetic order, leading to a band insulator state. Moreover, for sufficiently strong interlayer tunneling, we also observe the emergence of a direct dimer product state of mixed D-Mott and S-Mott character along the equal coupling line. We discuss the stability range of this state within strong-coupling perturbation theory. Furthermore, we consider the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Such an interaction is found to enhance both charge density and spin-current correlations within the semimetallic region. However, inside the accessible parameter region, they do not stabilize long-ranged charge density wave order nor a quantum spin Hall state, and the only insulating state that we observe exhibits long-range antiferromagnetism.

Electronic instabilities of the extended Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice from functional renormalization

Yanick Volpez, Daniel D. Scherer, Michael M. Scherer

Interacting fermions on the half-filled honeycomb lattice with short-range repulsions have been suggested to host a variety of interesting many-body ground states, e.g., a topological Mott insulator. A number of recent studies of the spinless case in terms of exact diagonalization, the infinite density matrix renormalization group, and the functional renormalization group, however, indicate a suppression of the topological Mott insulating phase in the whole range of interaction parameters. Here, we complement the previous studies by investigating the quantum many-body instabilities of the physically relevant case of spin-1/2 fermions with onsite, nearest-neighbor, and second-nearest-neighbor repulsion. To this end, we employ the multipatch functional renormalization group for correlated fermions with refined momentum resolution observing the emergence of an antiferromagnetic spin-density wave and a charge-density wave for dominating onsite and nearest-neighbor repulsions, respectively. For dominating second-nearest neighbor interaction our results favor an ordering tendency towards a charge-modulated ground state over the topological Mott insulating state. The latter evades a stabilization as the leading instability by the additional onsite interaction.

Determinant quantum Monte Carlo for the half-filled Hubbard model with nonlocal density-density interactions

Meng Yao, Da Wang, Qiang-Hua Wang

We design a novel formalism of determinant quantum Monte Carlo method for the half-filled Hubbard model with on-site Hubbard interaction $U$ and nearest-neighbor density-density interaction $V$ on the square lattice. The formalism is free of sign problem for $|U|\ensuremath{\ge}4|V|$, and is achieved by introducing discrete auxiliary fields on the nearest-neighbor bonds alone. Based on this formalism, we study the ground-state phase diagram of the model systematically using the projector algorithm. Within the sign-problem free parameter space $|U|\ensuremath{\ge}4|V|$, we obtain antiferromagnetism for $U\ensuremath{\ge}4|V|>0$, charge density wave for $U<\ensuremath{-}4V$ and $V>0, s$-wave superconductivity for $U<0$ and small negative $V$, and phase separation for $U<0$ and a larger negative $V$. We also obtain the single particle gap and spin excitation spectra, and by comparison to mean field results, as well as available literatures, we discuss the possible phase boundary beyond the sign-problem free region. The unbiased numerically exact results can be taken as benchmarks in future studies. Finally, we discuss possible extension for longer-range interactions in the model.

Ground-state phase diagram of the half-filled bilayer Hubbard model

Michael Golor, Timo Reckling, Laura Classen +2 more

Employing a combination of functional renormalization group calculations and projective determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we examine the Hubbard model on the square lattice bilayer at half filling. From this combined analysis, we obtain a comprehensive account of the ground-state phase diagram with respect to the extent of the system's metallic and (antiferromagnetically ordered) Mott-insulating as well as band-insulating regions. By means of an unbiased functional renormalization group approach, we exhibit the antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating state as the relevant instability of the free metallic state, induced by any weak finite on-site repulsion. Upon performing a careful analysis of the quantum Monte Carlo data, we resolve the difficulty of identifying this antiferromagnetic ground state for finite interlayer hopping in the weak-coupling regime, where nonmonotonic finite-size corrections are shown to relate to the two-sheeted Fermi surface structure of the metallic phase. On the other hand, quantum Monte Carlo simulations are well suited to identify the transition between the Mott-insulating phase and the band insulator in the intermediate-to-strong coupling regime. Here, we compare our numerical findings to indications for the transition region obtained from the functional renormalization group procedure.

Extended Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice

Welberth Kennedy, Sebastião dos Anjos Sousa-Júnior, Natanael C. Costa +1 more

We investigate the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model on a half-filled honeycomb lattice through determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations. At zero temperature, the repulsive Hubbard model undergoes a transition to an antiferromagnetic state only for sufficiently strong on-site coupling $U$. However, the inclusion of a repulsive extended interaction $V$ between fermions in nearest-neighbor orbitals induces a charge-ordered phase. For attractive interactions, we also identify superconducting and phase-separated phases. We have determined a complete phase diagram with the aid of structure factors associated with various orderings, combined with measurements of double occupancy and the average sign of fermionic determinants. We have established that the semimetallic phase forms a zone from which ordered phases are excluded, preventing the stabilization of a superconducting phase with $d$-wave symmetry, i.e., only $s$-wave pairing is allowed.

Phase diagram of the half-filled extended Hubbard model in two dimensions

Biplab Chattopadhyay, D. M. Gaitonde

We consider an extended Hubbard model of interacting fermions on a lattice. The fermion kinetic energy corresponds to a tight-binding Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor (-t) and next-nearest-neighbor (${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$) hopping matrix elements. In addition to the on-site Hubbard interaction (U) we also consider a nearest-neighbor repulsion (V). We obtain the zero-temperature phase diagram of our model within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We consider ground states having charge- and spin-density-wave ordering as well as states with orbital antiferromagnetism or spin nematic order. The latter two states correspond to particle-hole binding with ${\mathrm{d}}_{{\mathrm{x}}^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{y}}^{2}}$ symmetry in the charge and spin channels, respectively. For ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$=0, only the charge-density-wave and spin-density-wave states are energetically stable. For nonzero ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$, we find that orbital antiferromagnetism (or spin nematic) order is stable over a finite portion of the phase diagram at weak coupling. This region of stability is seen to grow with increasing values of ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$.

Phase diagram and Fermi liquid properties of the extended Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice

Wéi Wú, A.–M. S. Tremblay

The Hubbard and extended Hubbard models on the honeycomb lattice can be seen as prototype models of a single-layer graphene placed in a high dielectric constant environment that screens the Coulomb interaction. Taking advantage of the absence of a sign problem at half-filling, we study this problem with clusters up to 96 sites with the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method as an impurity solver for the dynamical cluster approximation at finite temperatures. After determining the stability of the semimetallic phase to interaction-induced spin-density wave (SDW), charge-density wave (CDW), and Mott insulating phases, we study the single-particle dynamics of the Dirac fermions. We show that when spontaneous symmetry breaking is avoided, the semimetallic phase is a stable Fermi liquid in the presence of repulsive interactions and that Kondo screening dominates the low temperature regime, even though there is a $\ensuremath{\rho}(\ensuremath{\omega})=|\ensuremath{\omega}|$ type local density of states. We also investigate the impact of the correlation effects on the renormalization of the Fermi velocity ${v}_{F}$. We find that ${v}_{F}$ is not renormalized when only on-site repulsion $U$ is present, but that near-neighbor repulsion $V$ does renormalize ${v}_{F}$. This may explain the variations between different measurements of ${v}_{F}$ in graphene.
