Abstract

We present an analytical solution for classical correlation, defined in terms of linear entropy, in an arbitrary system when the second subsystem is measured. We show that the optimal measurements used in the maximization of the classical correlation in terms of linear entropy, when used to calculate the quantum discord in terms of von Neumann entropy, result in a tight upper bound for arbitrary d⊗2 systems. This bound agrees with all known analytical results about quantum discord in terms of von Neumann entropy and, when comparing it with the numerical results for 10(6) two-qubit random density matrices, we obtain an average deviation of order 10(-4). Furthermore, our results give a way to calculate the quantum discord for arbitrary n-qubit GHZ and W states evolving under the action of the amplitude damping noisy channel.

Analytical expression of quantum discord for rank-2 two-qubit states

Zhu, X., Fei, S., Li-Jost, X.

Quantum correlations characterized by quantum entanglement and quantum discord play important roles in many quantum information processing. We study the relations among the entanglement of formation, concurrence, tangle, linear entropy-based classical correlation and von Neumann entropy-based classical correlation . We present analytical formulae of linear entropy-based classical correlation for arbitrary $$d\otimes 2$$ quantum states and von Neumann entropy-based classical correlation for arbitrary $$2\otimes 2$$ rank-2 quantum states. From the von Neumann entropy-based classical correlation, we derive an explicit formula of quantum discord for arbitrary rank-2 two-qubit quantum states.

On the upper bound of classical correlations in a bipartite quantum system

Theresa Christ, Haye Hinrichsen

Abstract For a bipartite quantum system consisting of subsystems A and B it was shown by Zhang et al (2012 Phys. Lett . A 376 3588–92) that the amount of classical correlations, which is used to define the quantum discord, is known to be bounded from above by the minimum of the von Neumann entropies of the subsystems A and B . We provide an alternative proof that is shorter and more transparent as it works without defining correlation matrices.

Optimal measurement for quantum discord of two-qubit states

Mingjun Shi, Chunxiao Sun, Feng-Jian Jiang +2 more

We present a complete treatment for the quantum discord of two-qubit $X$ states, by developing a geometric picture of a quantum steering ellipsoid. It is shown that either a von Neumann measurement or a three-element positive-operator-valued measurement is optimal. The condition for the latter is obtained and expressed in geometric language. We show, by using analytical as well as numerical results, that there is a systematic structure in the optimal decomposition which exists in a class of states including the $X$ states. More significantly, we establish the relation to the quantum channel by identifying the steering ellipsoid with the quantum channel ellipsoid. Thus the quantum discord and classical correlation are closely related to the concept of the entanglement entropy of the quantum channel.

Quantum correlation on the correlation directions measurements

Zhengjun Xi, Hongxuan Lei, Yongming Li

We discuss the upper bound of quantum discord, and derive a necessary condition for the reachable entropy quantum correlated states. We analyze the optimal measurements to access classical correlation in arbitrary two-qubit system. Then, we define the minimum quantum discord on the correlation direction, and demonstrate that it could be a good approximation of quantum discord. Finally, we study the dynamics of quantum correlation, which exhibits a sudden change under the decayed process, then we give a reasonable interpretation for this phenomenon with respects to the minimum quantum discord on the correlation direction.

Quantum discord for qubit–qudit systems

Sai Vinjanampathy, A. R. P. Rau

Quantum discord, a kind of quantum correlation, is defined as the difference between quantum mutual information and classical correlation in a bipartite system. It has been discussed so far for small systems with only a few independent parameters. We extend here to a much broader class of states when the second party is of arbitrary dimension d, so long as the first, measured, party is a qubit. We present two formulae to calculate quantum discord, the first relating to the original entropic definition and the second to a recently proposed geometric distance measure which leads to an analytical formulation. The tracing over the qubit in the entropic calculation is reduced to a very simple prescription. And, when the d-dimensional system is a so-called X state, the density matrix having non-zero elements only along the diagonal and anti-diagonal so as to appear visually like the letter X, the entropic calculation can be carried out analytically. Such states of the full bipartite qubit-qudit system may be named "extended X states", whose density matrix is built of four block matrices, each visually appearing as an X. The optimization involved in the entropic calculation is generally over two parameters, reducing to one for many cases, and avoided altogether for an overwhelmingly large set of density matrices as our numerical investigations demonstrate. Our results also apply to states of a N-qubit system, where "extended X states" consist of (2^(N+2) - 1) states, larger in number than the (2^(N+1) - 1) of X states of N qubits. While these are still smaller than the total number (2^(2N) - 1) of states of N qubits, the number of parameters involved is nevertheless large. In the case of N = 2, they encompass the entire 15-dimensional parameter space, that is, the extended X states for N = 2 represent the full qubit-qubit system.

Necessary and sufficient condition for saturating the upper bound of quantum discord

Zhengjun Xi, Xiao-Ming Lu, Xiaoguang Wang +1 more

We revisit the upper bound of quantum discord given by the von Neumann entropy of the measured subsystem. Using the Koashi-Winter relation, we obtain a tradeoff between the amount of classical correlation and quantum discord in the tripartite pure states. The difference between the quantum discord and its upper bound is interpreted as a measure on the classical correlative capacity. Further, we give the explicit characterization of the quantum states saturating the upper bound of quantum discord, through the equality condition for the Araki-Lieb inequality. We also demonstrate that the saturating of the upper bound of quantum discord precludes any further correlation between the measured subsystem and the environment.
