Abstract

We prove a result for the spin-$1/2$ quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet on $d$-dimensional boxes $\{1,\dots,L\}^d \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$. For any $n$, if $L$ is large enough, the Hamiltonian satisfies: among all vectors whose total spin is at most $(L^d/2)-n$, the minimum energy is attained by a vector whose total spin is exactly $(L^d/2)-n$.

Ferromagnetic Ordering of Energy Levels

Wolfgang Spitzer, Shannon L. Starr, Lam Tran +1 more

Dedicated to Elliott Lieb on the occasion of his seventieth birthday Abstract We study a natural conjecture regarding ferromagnetic ordering of energy levels in the Heisenberg model which complements the Lieb-Mattis Theorem of 1962 for antiferromagnets: for ferromagnetic Heisenberg models the lowest energies in each subspace of fixed total spin are strictly ordered according to the total spin, with the lowest, i.e., the ground state, belonging to the maximal total spin subspace. Our main result is a proof of this conjecture for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXX and XXZ ferromagnets in one dimension. Our proof has two main ingredients. The first is an extension of a result of Koma and Nachtergaele which shows that monotonicity as a function of the total spin follows from the monotonicity of the ground state energy in each total spin subspace as a function of the length of the chain. For the second part of the proof we use the Temperley-Lieb algebra to calculate, in a suitable basis, the matrix elements of the Hamiltonian restricted to each subspace of the highest weight vectors with a given total spin. We then show that the positivity properties of these matrix elements imply the necessary monotonicity in the volume. Our method also shows that the first excited state of the XXX ferromagnet on any finite tree has one less than maximal total spin.

Ferromagnetic Lieb-Mattis Theorem

Bruno Nachtergaele, Shannon L. Starr

We prove ferromagnetic ordering of energy levels for XXX Heisenberg chains with spins of arbitrary magnitude, thus extending our previous result for the spin-1/2 chain. Ferromagnetic ordering means that the minimum energies in the invariant subspaces of fixed total spin are monotone decreasing as a function of the total spin. This result provides a ferromagnetic analogue of the well-known theorem by Lieb and Mattis about ordering of energy levels in antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic systems on bipartite graphs.

Free-Energy Asymptotics of the Two-Dimensional Quantum Heisenberg Ferromagnet

Andreas Klippel

We prove the leading low-temperature free-energy asymptotics of the nearest-neighbour quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet on $\mathbb Z^2$. For every fixed $S\in\{\frac12,1,\frac32,\ldots\}$, the free energy per site satisfies \[ \lim_{β\to\infty}β^2S f_2(β,S)=-\fracπ{24}. \] This formula was predicted by Takahashi's modified spin-wave theory [15]. Napiórkowski and Seiringer proved the corresponding upper bound but left the matching lower bound in two dimensions open [13], a gap later highlighted again by Seiringer [14]. We prove this missing bound through a new comparison between the magnon exclusion dynamics and free bosons, based on extending wave functions to collision configurations with controlled kinetic cost.

Free energy asymptotics of the quantum Heisenberg spin chain

Marcin Napiórkowski, Robert Seiringer

Abstract We consider the ferromagnetic quantum Heisenberg model in one dimension, for any spin $$S\ge 1/2$$ S ≥ 1 / 2 . We give upper and lower bounds on the free energy, proving that at low temperature it is asymptotically equal to the one of an ideal Bose gas of magnons, as predicted by the spin-wave approximation. The trial state used in the upper bound yields an analogous estimate also in the case of two spatial dimensions, which is believed to be sharp at low temperature.

Counterexamples to ferromagnetic ordering of energy levels

Wolfgang Spitzer, Shannon Starr, Lam Tran

The Heisenberg ferromagnet has symmetry group SU(2). The property known as ferromagnetic ordering of energy levels (FOEL) states that the minimum energy eigenvalue among eigenvectors with total spin s is monotone decreasing as a function of s. While this property holds for certain graphs such as open chains, in this note we demonstrate some counterexamples. We consider the spin 1/2 model on rings of length 2n for n = 2, 3, …, 8, and show that the minimum energy among all spin singlets is less than or equal to the minimum energy among all spin triplets, which violates FOEL. This also shows some counterexamples to the “Aldous ordering” for the symmetric exclusion process. We also review some of the literature related to these examples.

General method for obtaining the energy minimum of spin Hamiltonians for separable states

Géza Tóth, József Pitrik

We present a general method to determine the energy minimum of spin Hamiltonians over separable states when the single-particle reduced density matrices are fixed. For ferromagnetic Ising and Ising-like models with nearest-neighbor interactions on lattices of any dimension and on a fully connected graph in an external field, this minimum is given by a compact analytic formula involving the quantum Fisher information. For the ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain of spin-1/2 particles, the minimum is expressed via the Uhlmann-Jozsa fidelity. These relations enable the direct extraction of both the quantum Fisher information and the fidelity from correlation measurements on the ground states of suitably engineered spin models.
