Spectral analysis of a selected non self-adjoint Hamiltonian in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space

Abstract

The so-called equation of motion method is useful to obtain the explicit form of the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of certain non self-adjoint bosonic Hamiltonians with real eigenvalues. These operators can be diagonalized when they are expressed in terms of pseudo-bosons, which do not behave as ordinary bosons under the adjoint transformation, but obey the Weil-Heisenberg commutation relations.

Numerical signatures of non-self-adjointness in quantum Hamiltonians

M Ruf, Carsten Müller, R. Grobe

Non-self-adjoint quantum mechanical operators do not necessarily possess eigenvalues. Finite N ? N matrix representations of these operators, however, can be hermitian and therefore have a finite set of N real eigenvalues. Using the momentum operator, the kinetic energy operator, and the relativistic Hamiltonian of the Coulomb problem for the Klein?Gordon equation as examples, we examine analytically and also numerically the properties of the spectrum and eigenvectors in finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. We study the limit of N ? ? for which some eigenvalues cease to exist as the corresponding operators are not self-adjoint.

A quantum system with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

Natália Bebiano, João da Providência, S. Nishiyama +1 more

The relevance in physics of non-Hermitian operators with real eigenvalues is being widely recognized not only in quantum mechanics but also in other areas, such as quantum optics, quantum fluid dynamics, and quantum field theory. In this note, a quantum system described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, which is constituted by two types of interacting bosons, is investigated. The real eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian are explicitly determined, as well as complete biorthogonal sets of eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian and its adjoint. The diagonal representation of H is obtained using pseudo-bosonic operators.

Non-Hermitian quantum mechanics of bosonic operators

Natália Bebiano João da Providência, João Pinheiro da Providência

The spectral analysis of a non-Hermitian unbounded operator appearing in quantum physics is our main concern. The properties of such an operator are essentially different from those of Hermitian Hamiltonians, namely due to spectral instabilities. We demonstrate that the considered operator and its adjoint can be diagonalized when expressed in terms of certain conveniently constructed operators. We show that their eigenfunctions constitute complete systems, but do not form Riesz bases. Attempts to overcome this difficulty in the quantum mechanical set up are pointed out.

Generalized Heisenberg algebra and (non linear) pseudo-bosons

F Bagarello, Evaldo M. F. Curado, J P Gazeau

Abstract We propose a deformed version of the generalized Heisenberg algebra by using techniques borrowed from the theory of pseudo-bosons. In particular, this analysis is relevant when non self-adjoint Hamiltonians are needed to describe a given physical system. We also discuss relations with nonlinear pseudo-bosons. Several examples are discussed.

Introduction

Jan Nesemann

In the theory of quantum mechanics the Hamiltonian H is typically selfadjoint, i.e., H = H *. The self-adjointness ensures that the spectrum of the Hamiltonian, representing the energy spectrum of H , is real but it is not a necessary condition. In the literature on so-called PT -symmetric quantum mechanics (see, e.g., [BB98], [BBM99], [BBJ03], [Ben04b] and [Ben07]), it is believed that self-adjointness is rather a mathematical requirement than a physically established fact. Therefore, it was considered a surprise that operators exist which are not self-adjoint in the given quantum mechanical Hilbert space, but have real spectrum and that – if e.g. complex eigenvalues were present – they occurred only in complex conjugate pairs.
