Abstract

We investigate the finite-temperature properties of the one-dimensional two-component Bose gas (2CBG) with repulsive contact interaction in a harmonic trap. Making use of a lattice embedding for the 2CBG and the quantum transfer matrix, we derive a system of two nonlinear integral equations characterizing the thermodynamics of the uniform system for all values of the relevant parameters: temperature, strength of the interaction, chemical potential, and magnetic field. This system allows for an easy numerical implementation in stark contrast with the infinite number of equations obtained by employing the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. We use this exact solution coupled with the local density approximation to compute the density profiles and local density correlation function of the inhomogeneous gas for a wide range of coupling strengths and temperatures. Our results show that the polarization in the center of the trap influences heavily the local correlator especially in the experimentally accessible Tonks-Girardeau regime.

Finite temperature correlations and density profiles of an inhomogeneous interacting 1D Bose gas

Karen V. Kheruntsyan, Dimitri M. Gangardt, P. D. Drummond +1 more

We calculate the density profiles and density correlation functions of the one-dimensional Bose gas in a harmonic trap, using the exact finite-temperature solutions for the uniform case, and applying a local density approximation. The results are valid for a trapping potential which is slowly varying relative to a correlation length. They allow a direct experimental test of the transition from the weak coupling Gross-Pitaevskii regime to the strong coupling, \'fermionic\' Tonks-Girardeau regime. We also calculate the average two-particle correlation which characterizes the bulk properties of the sample, and find that it can be well approximated by the value of the local pair correlation in the trap center.

Thermodynamics, contact, and density profiles of the repulsive Gaudin-Yang model

Ovidiu I. Pâţu, Andreas Klümper

We address the problem of computing the thermodynamic properties of the repulsive one-dimensional two-component Fermi gas with contact interaction, also known as the Gaudin-Yang model. Using a specific lattice embedding and the quantum transfer matrix we derive an exact system of only two nonlinear integral equations for the thermodynamics of the homogeneous model which is valid for all temperatures and values of the chemical potential, magnetic field, and coupling strength. This system allows for an easy and extremely accurate calculation of thermodynamic properties circumventing the difficulties associated with the truncation of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz system of equations. We present extensive results for the densities, polarization, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, interaction energy, Tan contact, and local correlation function of opposite spins. Our results show that at low and intermediate temperatures the experimentally accessible contact is a nonmonotonic function of the coupling strength. As a function of the temperature the contact presents a pronounced local minimum in the Tonks-Girardeau regime which signals an abrupt change of the momentum distribution in a small interval of temperature. The density profiles of the system in the presence of a harmonic trapping potential are computed using the exact solution of the homogeneous model coupled with the local density approximation. We find that at finite temperature the density profile presents a double shell structure (partially polarized center and fully polarized wings) only when the polarization in the center of the trap is above a critical value which is monotonically increasing with temperature.

Polarization suppression and nonmonotonic local two-body correlations in the two-component Bose gas in one dimension

Jean-Sébastien Caux, Antoine Klauser, Jeroen van den Brink

We study the interplay of quantum statistics, strong interactions, and finite temperatures in the two-component (spinor) Bose gas with repulsive delta-function interactions in one dimension. Using the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain the equation of state, population densities, and local density correlation numerically as a function of all physical parameters (interaction, temperature, and chemical potentials), quantifying the full crossover between low-temperature ferromagnetic and high-temperature unpolarized regimes. In contrast to the single component, Lieb-Liniger gas, nonmonotonic behavior of the local density correlation as a function of temperature is observed.

Density-functional theory of two-component Bose gases in one-dimensional harmonic traps

Yajiang Hao, Shu Chen

We investigate the ground-state properties of two-component Bose gases confined in one-dimensional harmonic traps in the scheme of density-functional theory. The density-functional calculations employ a Bethe-ansatz-based local-density approximation for the correlation energy, which accounts for the correlation effect properly from the weakly interacting regime to the strongly interacting regime. For the binary Bose mixture with spin-independent interaction, the homogeneous reference system is exactly solvable by the Bethe-ansatz method. Within the local-density approximation, we determine the density distribution of each component and study its evolution from Bose distributions to Fermi-like distribution with the increase in interaction. For the binary mixture of Tonks-Girardeau gases with a tunable interspecies repulsion, with a generalized Bose-Fermi transformation we show that the Bose mixture can be mapped into a two-component Fermi gas, which corresponds to exact soluble Yang-Gaudin model for the homogeneous system. Based on the ground-state energy function of the Yang-Gaudin model, the ground-state density distributions are calculated for various interspecies interactions. It is shown that with the increase in interspecies interaction, the system exhibits composite-fermionization crossover.

Exact numerical simulations of a one-dimensional trapped Bose gas

Bernd G Schmidt, Michael Fleischhauer

We analyze the ground-state and low-temperature properties of a one-dimensional Bose gas in a harmonic trapping potential using the numerical density-matrix renormalization group. Calculations cover the whole range from the Bogoliubov limit of weak interactions to the Tonks-Girardeau limit. Local quantities such as density and local three-body correlations are calculated and shown to agree very well with analytic predictions within a local-density approximation. The transition between temperature-dominated to quantum-dominated correlation is determined. It is shown that despite the presence of the harmonic trapping potential, first-order correlations display, over a large range, the algebraic decay of a harmonic fluid with a Luttinger parameter determined by the density at the trap center.
