Universal scaling of density and momentum distributions in Lieb-Liniger gases

Abstract

We present an exact numerical study of the scaling of density and momentum distribution functions of harmonically trapped one-dimensional bosons with repulsive contact interactions at zero and finite temperatures. We use path integral quantum Monte Carlo with worm updates in our calculations at finite interaction strengths, and the Bose-Fermi mapping in the Tonks-Girardeau regime. We discuss the homogeneous case and, within the local density approximation, use it to motivate the scaling in the presence of a harmonic trap. For the momentum distribution function, we pay special attention to the high momentum tails and their ${k}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ asymptotic behavior.

Correlation functions and momentum distribution of one-dimensional Bose systems

G. E. Astrakharchik, S. Giorgini

The ground-state correlation properties of a one-dimensional Bose system described by the Lieb-Liniger Hamiltonian are investigated by using exact quantum Monte Carlo techniques. The pair distribution function, static structure factor, one-body density matrix, and momentum distribution of a homogeneous system are calculated for different values of the gas parameter ranging from the Tonks-Girardeau to the mean-field regime. Results for the momentum distribution of a harmonically trapped gas in configurations relevant to experiments are also presented.

Tan’s Contact for Trapped Lieb-Liniger Bosons at Finite Temperature

Hepeng Yao, David Clément, Anna Minguzzi +2 more

The universal Tan relations connect a variety of microscopic features of many-body quantum systems with two-body contact interactions to a single quantity, called the contact. The latter has become pivotal in the description of quantum gases. We provide a complete characterization of the Tan contact of the harmonically trapped Lieb-Liniger gas for arbitrary interactions and temperature. Combining thermal Bethe ansatz, local-density approximation, and exact quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we show that the contact is a universal function of only two scaling parameters, and determine the scaling function. We find that the temperature dependence of the contact, or equivalently the interaction dependence of the entropy, displays a maximum. The presence of this maximum provides an unequivocal signature of the crossover to the fermionized regime and it is accessible in current experiments.

Short-Distance Correlation Properties of the Lieb-Liniger System and Momentum Distributions of Trapped One-Dimensional Atomic Gases

Maxim Olshanii, Vanja Dunjko

We derive exact closed-form expressions for the first few terms of the short-distance Taylor expansion of the one-body correlation function of the Lieb-Liniger gas. As an intermediate result, we obtain the high-p asymptotics of the momentum distribution of both free and harmonically trapped atoms and show that it obeys a universal 1/p(4) law for all values of the interaction strength. We discuss the ways to observe the predicted momentum distributions experimentally, regarding them as a sensitive identifier for the Tonks-Girardeau regime of strong correlations.

Equilibrium and off-equilibrium trap-size scaling in one-dimensional ultracold bosonic gases

Massimo Campostrini B, Ettore Vicari

We study some aspects of equilibrium and off-equilibrium quantum dynamics of dilute bosonic gases in the presence of a trapping potential. We consider systems with a fixed number of particles and study their scaling behavior with increasing the trap size. We focus on one-dimensional bosonic systems, such as gases described by the Lieb-Liniger model and its Tonks-Girardeau limit of impenetrable bosons, and gases constrained in optical lattices as described by the Bose-Hubbard model. We study their quantum (zero-temperature) behavior at equilibrium and off equilibrium during the unitary time evolution arising from changes of the trapping potential, which may be instantaneous or described by a power-law time dependence, starting from the equilibrium ground state for an initial trap size. Renormalization-group scaling arguments and analytical and numerical calculations show that the trap-size dependence of the equilibrium and off-equilibrium dynamics can be cast in the form of a trap-size scaling in the low-density regime, characterized by universal power laws of the trap size, in dilute gases with repulsive contact interactions and lattice systems described by the Bose-Hubbard model. The scaling functions corresponding to several physically interesting observables are computed. Our results are of experimental relevance for systems of cold atomic gases trapped by tunable confining potentials.

Universal Contact for a Tonks-Girardeau Gas at Finite Temperature

Patrizia Vignolo, Anna Minguzzi

We determine the finite-temperature momentum distribution of a strongly interacting 1D Bose gas in the Tonks-Girardeau (impenetrable-boson) limit under harmonic confinement and explore its universal properties associated to the scale invariance of the model. We show that, at difference from the unitary Fermi gas in three dimensions, the weight of its large-momentum tails--given by Tan's contact--increases with temperature and calculate the high-temperature universal second contact coefficient using a virial expansion.

Density-functional theory of two-component Bose gases in one-dimensional harmonic traps

Yajiang Hao, Shu Chen

We investigate the ground-state properties of two-component Bose gases confined in one-dimensional harmonic traps in the scheme of density-functional theory. The density-functional calculations employ a Bethe-ansatz-based local-density approximation for the correlation energy, which accounts for the correlation effect properly from the weakly interacting regime to the strongly interacting regime. For the binary Bose mixture with spin-independent interaction, the homogeneous reference system is exactly solvable by the Bethe-ansatz method. Within the local-density approximation, we determine the density distribution of each component and study its evolution from Bose distributions to Fermi-like distribution with the increase in interaction. For the binary mixture of Tonks-Girardeau gases with a tunable interspecies repulsion, with a generalized Bose-Fermi transformation we show that the Bose mixture can be mapped into a two-component Fermi gas, which corresponds to exact soluble Yang-Gaudin model for the homogeneous system. Based on the ground-state energy function of the Yang-Gaudin model, the ground-state density distributions are calculated for various interspecies interactions. It is shown that with the increase in interspecies interaction, the system exhibits composite-fermionization crossover.
