Abstract

A set of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) is said to be unextendible if there does not exist another basis that is unbiased with respect to the given set. Here, we prove the existence of smaller sets of MUBs in prime-squared dimensions ($d=p^{2}$) that cannot be extended to a complete set using the generalized Pauli operators. We further observe an interesting connection between the existence of unextendible sets and the tightness of entropic uncertainty relations (EURs) in these dimensions. In particular, we show that our construction of unextendible sets of MUBs naturally leads to sets of $p+1$ MUBs that saturate both a Shannon ($H_{1}$) and a collision ($H_{2}$) entropic lower bound. Such an identification of smaller sets of MUBs satisfying tight EURs is crucial for cryptographic applications as well as constructing optimal entanglement witnesses for higher dimensional systems.

Unextendible mutually unbiased bases from Pauli C\classes

Prabha Mandayam, Somshubhro Bandyopadhyay, Markus Grassl +1 more

We provide a construction of sets of $d/2+1$ mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in dimensions $d=4,8$ using maximal commuting classes of Pauli operators. We show that these incomplete sets cannot be extended further using the operators of the Pauli group. Moreover, specific examples of sets of MUBs obtained using our construction are shown to be {\it strongly unextendible}; that is, there does not exist another vector that is unbiased with respect to the elements in the set. We conjecture the existence of such unextendible sets in higher dimensions $d=2^{n} (n>3) $ as well.} {Furthermore, we note an interesting connection between these unextendible sets and state-independent proofs of the Kochen-Specker Theorem for two-qubit systems. Our construction also leads to a proof of the tightness of a $H_{2}$ entropic uncertainty relation for any set of three MUBs constructed from Pauli classes in $d=4$.

Measures to characterise Approximate Mutually Unbiased Bases

Ajeet Kumar, Uditanshu Sadual

Mutually Unbiased bases has various application in quantum information procession and coding theory. There can be maximum d + 1 MUBs in C^d and d/2 +1 MUBs in R^d. But , over R^d MUBs are known to be non existent when d is odd and for most of the other even d there are mostly 3 Real MUBs. In case of C^d the construction for complete set of MUBs are known for only Prime Power dimension. Thus in general large set of MUBs are not known, particularly for composite dimensions which are not of the form of prime powers. Because of this, there are many constructions of Approximate version of MUBs. In this paper we make an attempt to define certain measures to characterise the AMUBs. Our construction of measures derives its inspiration from the applications of MUBs, and based on them, we define certain quantifiable measures, which are can be computed and gives estimates of how close the Approximate MUBs are to the MUBs. We use geometric interpretation, projective design features of MUBs and applications like Optimal State determination and Entropic Uncertainty of MUBs. We show generic relationship between these measures and show that it can be evaluated for APMUBs without known the exact construction details, thereby showing that definition of APMUB is sufficient completely characterise it. We also evaluate these measure for an interesting class of AMUBs called Weak MUBs and certain AMUBs constructed using RBDs.

Mutually Unbiased Bases and Orthogonal Latin Squares -- version 3

Stefan Joka

In this paper, we prove that the existence of a complete set of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in N-dimensional Hilbert space implies the existence of a complete set of mutually orthogonal Latin squares (MOLSs) of order N. In particular, we prove that a complete set of MUBs does not exist in dimension six (the first dimension which is not a power of prime).

Entanglement in mutually unbiased bases

Marcin Wieśniak, Tomasz Paterek, Anton Zeilinger

One of the essential features of quantum mechanics is that most pairs of observables cannot be measured simultaneously. This phenomenon manifests itself most strongly when observables are related to mutually unbiased bases. In this paper, we shed some light on the connection between mutually unbiased bases and another essential feature of quantum mechanics, quantum entanglement. It is shown that a complete set of mutually unbiased bases of a bipartite system contains a fixed amount of entanglement, independent of the choice of the set. This has implications for entanglement distribution among the states of a complete set. In prime-squared dimensions we present an explicit experiment-friendly construction of a complete set with a particularly simple entanglement distribution. Finally, we describe the basic properties of mutually unbiased bases composed of product states only. The constructions are illustrated with explicit examples in low dimensions. We believe that the properties of entanglement in mutually unbiased bases may be one of the ingredients to be taken into account to settle the question of the existence of complete sets. We also expect that they will be relevant to applications of bases in the experimental realization of quantum protocols in higher-dimensional Hilbert spaces.

More mutually unbiased bases

Mateo Cárdenes Wuttig, Joseph Tindall

Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) describe quantum measurements for which certainty in one basis gives uniform outcomes in the others. Their maximum number remains unknown in dimensions that are not powers of a prime. We introduce an ansatz that, in many dimensions, allows us to construct more MUBs than have previously been found. Each basis in the ansatz consists of a diagonal phase matrix applied to a fixed unitary, which is a tensor product of Fourier matrices and, optionally, any real Hadamard matrix. This construction yields five MUBs in dimension 12, six in dimensions 48, 96, and 192, seven in dimensions 36 and 108, and ten in dimension 648. These bases can then be extended to exceed the tensor product bound, asymptotically, in every eighteenth dimension. Moreover, we show that Paley's real Hadamard matrix can be used to construct $q+1$ bases in dimension $d = q(q+1)$ for every prime power $q\equiv3\pmod4$. This count grows as $\sqrt d$ and cannot be exceeded by tensor products of smaller sets.
