Abstract

It is well known that area pulses make Rabi oscillation and chirped pulses in the adiabatic interaction regime induce complete population inversion of a two-state system. Here we show that chirped zero-area pulses could engineer an interplay between the adiabatic evolution and Rabi-like rotations. In a proof-of-principle experiment utilizing spectral chirping of femtosecond laser pulses with a resonant spectral hole, we demonstrate that the chirped zero-area pulses could induce, for example, complete population inversion and return of the cold rubidium atom two-state system. Experimental result agrees well with the theoretically considered overall dynamics, which could be approximately modeled to a Ramsey-like three-pulse interaction, where the $x$ and $z$ rotations are driven by the hole and the main pulse, respectively.

Single-laser-pulse implementation of arbitrary ZYZ rotations of an atomic qubit

Han-gyeol Lee, Yunheung Song, Jaewook Ahn

Arbitrary rotation of a qubit can be performed with a three-pulse sequence, for example, $ZYZ$ rotations. However, this requires precise control of the relative phase and timing between the pulses, making it technically challenging in optical implementation in a short time scale. Here we show any $ZYZ$ rotations can be implemented with a single laser pulse, that is, a chirped pulse with a temporal hole. The hole of this shaped pulse induces a nonadiabatic interaction in the middle of the adiabatic evolution of the chirped pulse, converting the central part of an otherwise simple $Z$ rotation to a $Y$ rotation, constructing $ZYZ$ rotations. The result of our experiment performed with shaped femtosecond laser pulses and cold rubidium atoms shows strong agreement with the theory.

Selective excitation in a three-state system using a hybrid adiabatic-nonadiabatic interaction

Yunheung Song, Han-gyeol Lee, Hanlae Jo +1 more

The chirped-pulse interaction in the adiabatic coupling regime induces cyclic permutations of the energy states of a three-level system in the $V$-type configuration, which process is known as the three-level chirped rapid adiabatic passage (RAP). Here we show that a spectral hole in a chirped pulse can turn on or off the level mixing at adiabatic crossing points of this process, reducing the system to an effective two-level system. The given hybrid adiabatic-nonadiabatic transition enables selective excitation of the three-level system, controlled by the laser intensity and spectral position of the hole, as well as the sign of the chirp parameter. Experiments performed with shaped femtosecond laser pulses and the three lowest energy levels ($5{S}_{1/2}$, $5{P}_{1/2}$, and $5{P}_{3/2}$) of atomic rubidium $(\mathrm{Rb})$ show good agreement with the theoretically analyzed dynamics. The result indicates that our method, when being combined with the ordinary chirped RAP, implements an adiabatic transition between the Raman-coupled excited states. Furthermore, our laser intensity-dependent control may have applications including selective excitations of atoms or ions arranged in space when being used in conjunction with laser beam profile programming.

Open Quantum Systems Driven by Chirped Pulses: Quantized versus Semiclassical Fields and the Validity of the Rotating-Wave Approximation

Justin Zhengjie Tan, Frank Großmann, Yiying Yan +2 more

Population transfer via chirped rapid adiabatic passage is studied using open quantum and semiclassical models, with and without the rotating-wave approximation. A time-dependent variational approach based on the multiple-Davydov D$_2$ trial state is employed to simulate the quantum models with an arbitrary finite mean photon number. We examine the accuracy of both the semiclassical field description and the rotating-wave approximation. Robust population transfer is identified over a wide parameter regime controlled by the laser spectral chirp and is found to be insensitive to the spin--phonon coupling strength, Gaussian pulse area, and energy gap of the two-level system.

Femtosecond Stark-Chirped Rapid Adiabatic Passage by Single Spectrally Shaped Pulse

Han-gyeol Lee, Hyosub Kim, Hanlae Jo +1 more

Complete population inversion of two-level atoms in a magneto-optical trap is demonstrated by off-resonant two laser pulses shaped from a single ultrafast laser pulse. The observed phenomenon is explained in the context of femto-second laser version of Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage.

Complete population inversion by a phase jump: an exactly soluble model

Nikolay V. Vitanov

An exact analytic solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation is presented for a two-state quantum system coherently driven by a nonresonant pulsed external field. The pulse has a hyperbolic-secant shape, with a sign jump (i.e. a phase step of π) at its maximum, which nullifies the overall pulse area. It is shown that off resonance, for detunings larger than the pulse bandwidth, the transition probability approaches unity as the field intensity increases. The population inversion is robust against small-to-moderate variations in the detuning and the intensity, a feature reminiscent of adiabatic passage. The population inversion, however, is not of adiabatic nature; it is induced by δ-function-shaped nonadiabatic coupling with an area of nearly π. An estimate of the required experimental resources shows that implementation with shaped femtosecond pulses is feasible.

Quantum Control by Few-Cycles Pulses: The Two-Level Problem

François Peyraut, Frédéric Holweck, S. Guérin

We investigate the problem of population transfer in a two-states system driven by an external electromagnetic field featuring a few cycles, until the extreme limit of two or one cycle. Taking the physical constraint of zero-area total field into account, we determine strategies leading to ultrahigh-fidelity population transfer despite the failure of the rotating wave approximation. We specifically implement adiabatic passage based on adiabatic Floquet theory for a number of cycles as low as 2.5 cycles, finding and making the dynamics follow an adiabatic trajectory connecting the initial and targeted states. Nonadiabatic strategies with shaped or chirped pulses, extending the π-pulse regime to two- or single-cycle pulses, are also derived.
