Abstract

We study the effects of Coulomb interaction between 2D Weyl fermions with anisotropic dispersion which displays relativistic dynamics along one direction and nonrelativistic dynamics along the other. Such a dispersion can be realized in phosphorene under electric field or strain, in TiO_{2}/VO_{2} superlattices, and, more generally, at the quantum critical point between a nodal semimetal and an insulator in systems with a chiral symmetry. Using the one-loop renormalization group approach in combination with the large-N expansion, we find that the system displays interaction-driven non-Fermi liquid behavior in a wide range of intermediate frequencies and marginal Fermi liquid behavior at the smallest frequencies. In the non-Fermi liquid regime, the quasiparticle residue Z at energy E scales as Z∝E^{a} with a>0, and the parameters of the fermionic dispersion acquire anomalous dimensions. In the marginal Fermi-liquid regime, Z∝(|logE|)^{-b} with universal b=3/2.

Emergent Anisotropic Non-Fermi Liquid at a Topological Phase Transition in Three Dimensions

SangEun Han, Changhee Lee, Eun-Gook Moon +1 more

Understanding correlation effects in topological phases and their transitions is a cutting-edge area of research in recent condensed matter physics. We study topological quantum phase transitions (TQPTs) between double-Weyl semimetals (DWSMs) and insulators, and argue that a novel class of quantum criticality appears at the TQPT characterized by emergent anisotropic non-Fermi-liquid behaviors, in which the interplay between the Coulomb interaction and electronic critical modes induces not only anisotropic renormalization of the Coulomb interaction but also strongly correlated electronic excitation in three spatial dimensions. Using the standard renormalization group methods, large N_{f} theory, and the ε=4-d method with a fermion flavor number N_{f} and spatial dimension d, we obtain the anomalous dimensions of electrons (η_{f}=0.366/N_{f}) in large N_{f} theory and the associated anisotropic scaling relations of various physical observables. Our results may be observed in candidate materials for DWSMs such as HgCr_{2}Se_{4} or SrSi_{2} when the system undergoes a TQPT.

From Birefringent Electrons to a Marginal or Non-Fermi Liquid of Relativistic Spin- 1/2 Fermions: An Emergent Superuniversality

Bitan Roy, Malcolm P. Kennett, Kun Yang +1 more

We present the quantum critical theory of an interacting nodal Fermi liquid of quasirelativistic pseudospin-3/2 fermions that have a noninteracting birefringent spectrum with two distinct Fermi velocities. When such quasiparticles interact with gapless bosonic degrees of freedom that mediate either the long-range Coulomb interaction or its short range component (responsible for spontaneous symmetry breaking), in the deep infrared or quantum critical regime in two dimensions, the system is, respectively, described by a marginal- or a non-Fermi liquid of relativistic spin-1/2 fermions (possessing a unique velocity), and is always a marginal Fermi liquid in three dimensions. We consider a possible generalization of these scenarios to fermions with an arbitrary half-odd-integer spin, and conjecture that critical spin-1/2 excitations represent a superuniversal description of the entire family of interacting quasirelativistic fermions.

Anisotropic non-Fermi liquids

Shouvik Sur, Sung-Sik Lee

We study non-Fermi-liquid states that arise at the quantum critical points associated with the spin density wave (SDW) and charge density wave (CDW) transitions in metals with twofold rotational symmetry. We use the dimensional regularization scheme, where a one-dimensional Fermi surface is embedded in $(3\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\epsilon})$-dimensional momentum space. In three dimensions, quasilocal marginal Fermi liquids arise both at the SDW and CDW critical points: the speed of the collective mode along the ordering wave vector is logarithmically renormalized to zero compared to that of Fermi velocity. Below three dimensions, however, the SDW and CDW critical points exhibit drastically different behaviors. At the SDW critical point, a stable anisotropic non-Fermi-liquid state is realized for small $\ensuremath{\epsilon}$, where not only time but also different spatial coordinates develop distinct anomalous dimensions. The non-Fermi liquid exhibits an emergent algebraic nesting as the patches of Fermi surface are deformed into a universal power-law shape near the hot spots. Due to the anisotropic scaling, the energy of incoherent spin fluctuations disperse with different power laws in different momentum directions. At the CDW critical point, on the other hand, the perturbative expansion breaks down immediately below three dimensions as the interaction renormalizes the speed of charge fluctuations to zero within a finite renormalization group scale through a two-loop effect. The difference originates from the fact that the vertex correction antiscreens the coupling at the SDW critical point whereas it screens at the CDW critical point.

Interacting birefringent electrons: Marginal- or non-Fermi liquid of spin-1/2 fermions

We present the quantum critical theory of an interacting nodal Fermi-liquid of quasi-relativisitc (pseudo)-spin-3/2 fermions that have a non-interacting \emph{birefringent} spectrum with \emph{two} distinct Fermi velocities. When such quasiparticles interact with gapless bosonic degrees of freedom that mediate either the long-range Coulomb interaction or its short range component (responsible for spontaneous symmetry breaking), in the deep infrared or quantum critical regime in two dimensions the system is respectively described by a \emph{marginal-} or a \emph{non-Fermi liquid} of relativistic spin-1/2 fermions (possessing a \emph{unique} velocity), and is always a \emph{marginal Fermi liquid} in three dimensions. We consider a possible generalization of these scenarios to fermions with an arbitrary half-odd-integer spin, and conjecture that critical spin-1/2 excitations represent a \emph{superuniversal} description of the entire family of interacting quasi-relativistic fermions.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior at flat hot spots from quantum critical fluctuations at the onset of charge- or spin-density wave order

Lukas Debbeler, Walter Metzner

We analyze quantum fluctuation effects at the onset of charge- or spin-density wave order with a $2{k}_{F}$ wave vector $\mathbf{Q}$ in two-dimensional metals, for the special case where $\mathbf{Q}$ connects a pair of hot spots situated at high symmetry points of the Fermi surface with a vanishing Fermi surface curvature. We compute the order parameter susceptibility and the fermion self-energy in one-loop approximation. The susceptibility has a pronounced peak at $\mathbf{Q}$, and the self-energy displays non-Fermi liquid behavior at the hot spots, with a linear frequency dependence of its imaginary part. The real part of the one-loop self-energy exhibits logarithmic divergencies with universal prefactors as a function of both frequency and momentum, which may be interpreted as perturbative signatures of power laws with universal anomalous dimensions. As a result, one obtains a non-Fermi liquid metal with a vanishing quasiparticle weight at the hot spots, and a renormalized dispersion relation with anomalous algebraic momentum dependencies near the hot spots.

Topological anisotropic non-Fermi liquid from a Berry-dipole semimetal

Konstantinos Ladovrechis

The interplay among topology and interactions has been a promising path towards identifying novel phases of condensed matter beyond these predicted by the established classification paradigms. In the present work, we propose such a novel phase of matter by studying the fate of a three-dimensional Berry-dipole semimetal, lying at the topological quantum critical point separating a Hopf insulator from a trivial insulator, in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions. Utilizing large-$N_f$ analysis and an $ε$-expansion within the renormalization-group scheme, we predict the emergence of a spatially anisotropic non-Fermi liquid with enhanced Berry-dipole moment. The corresponding scaling relations of certain physical observables are derived as functions of the probed energy and temperature scale, and we conclude by providing an observational test for probing the enhanced topological features of the anisotropic non-Fermi liquid.
