Abstract

We study phase transitions and the nature of order in a class of classical generalized O(N) nonlinear σ models (NLS) constructed by minimally coupling pure NLS with additional degrees of freedom in the form of (i) Ising ferromagnetic spins, (ii) an advective Stokesian velocity, and (iii) multiplicative noises. In examples (i) and (ii), and also (iii) with the associated multiplicative noise being not sufficiently long-ranged, we show that the models may display a class of unusual phase transitions between stiff and soft phases, where the effective spin stiffness respectively diverges and vanishes in the long wavelength limit at two dimensions (2D), unlike in pure NLS. In the stiff phase, in the thermodynamic limit the variance of the transverse spin (or, the Goldstone mode) fluctuations are found to scale with the system size L in 2D as lnlnL with a model-dependent amplitude, which is markedly weaker than the well-known lnL dependence of the variance of the broken symmetry modes in models that display quasi-long-range order in 2D. Equivalently, for N=2 at 2D the equal-time spin-spin correlations decay in powers of inverse logarithm of the spatial separation with model-dependent exponents. These transitions are controlled by the model parameters those couple the O(N) spins with the additional variables. In the presence of long-range noises in example (iii), true long-range order may set in 2D, depending upon the specific details of the underlying dynamics. Our results should be useful in understanding phase transitions in equilibrium and nonequilibrium low-dimensional systems with continuous symmetries in general.

Nonclassical regime of the two-dimensional long-range XY model: A comprehensive Monte Carlo study

Dingyun Yao, Tianning Xiao, Chao Zhang +2 more

The two-dimensional (2D) XY model plays a crucial role in statistical and condensed-matter physics. With the introduction of long-range interactions, the system exhibits a richer set of physical phenomena and a crossover between nonclassical and short-range universality classes. In this work, we investigate the 2D XY model with algebraically decaying interactions $\ensuremath{\sim}1/{r}^{2+\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ and provide a comprehensive numerical analysis of its thermodynamic properties. We demonstrate that for $\ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{\le}2$, the system undergoes a second-order phase transition into a ferromagnetic phase characterized by the emergence of long-range order. In the low-temperature phase, due to the presence of the Goldstone mode, the correlation function saturates to a nonzero constant in the form of a power law for $\ensuremath{\sigma}<2$, with decaying exponent $2\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\sigma}$, and in the form of the inverse logarithm of distance for $\ensuremath{\sigma}=2$. Moreover, the critical points and exponents are also determined for various $\ensuremath{\sigma}$. We provide compelling evidence that the crossover between nonclassical and short-range regimes occurs at $\ensuremath{\sigma}=2$. This work presents a detailed account of the simulation methodology, extensive numerical data, and new insights into the physics of long-range interacting systems.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Two-dimensional Long-range Heisenberg Model

Tianning Xiao, Dingyun Yao, Polle, Lode +2 more

Algebraically decaying interactions $\sim 1/r^{d+σ}$ can lead to nontrivial universality beyond short-range (SR) theories and spontaneous symmetry breaking in low-dimensional systems. We perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations for the classical long-range (LR) Heisenberg model in two dimensions (2D) up to linear size $L=8192$. We show that the system enters a long-range-ordered phase through a single continuous phase transition for all $σ\leq 2$, including the marginal case $σ=2$. In contrast, for $σ> 2$ it recovers the SR asymptotically free behavior with no finite-temperature transition. This places the LR--SR crossover threshold at $σ_* = 2$. To characterize the ordered phase, we introduce an LR simple random walk with a fixed total length $\mathcal{L} \sim\mathcal{O}(L^d)$. This fixed-$\mathcal L$ walk reproduces the finite-size scaling of the Goldstone-mode fluctuations in the LR Heisenberg model in both two and three dimensions, including the logarithmic scaling at $σ= 2$. These results further motivate a general criterion for the existence of finite-temperature long-range order in LR systems with continuous symmetry in any spatial dimension.

Two-Dimensional XY Ferromagnet Induced by Long-Range Interaction

Tianning Xiao, Dingyun Yao, Chao Zhang +2 more

Abstract The crossover between short-range and long-range (LR) universal behaviors remains a central theme in the physics of LR interacting systems. The competition between LR coupling and the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless mechanism makes the problem more subtle and less understood in the two-dimensional (2D) XY model, a cornerstone for investigating low-dimensional phenomena and their implications in quantum computation. We study the 2D XY model with algebraically decaying interaction ∼1/r 2+σ . Utilizing an advanced update strategy, we conduct LR Monte Carlo simulations of the model up to a linear size of L = 8192. Our results demonstrate continuous phase transitions into a ferromagnetic phase for σ < 2, which exhibit the simultaneous emergence of a long-ranged order and a power-law decaying correlation function due to the Goldstone mode. Furthermore, we find logarithmic scaling behaviors in the low-temperature phase at σ = 2. The observed scaling behaviors in the low-temperature phase for σ ≤ 2 agree with our theoretical analysis. Our findings request further theoretical understanding and can be of practical application in cutting-edge experiments like Rydberg atom arrays.

Novel phase transition in two-dimensional xy-models with long-range interaction

The purpose of this article is to give an overview of results concerning ordering and critical properties of two-dimensional ferromagnets including the dipolar interaction. We investigate a two-dimensional xy-model extended by the dipolar interaction.Describing our system by a nonlinear σ-model and using renormalization group methods we predict a phase transition to an ordered state. This transition is due to the long-range dipolar interaction. The ferromagnetic phase is governed by a low temperature fixed-point with infinite dipolar coupling. In the critical regime we find exponential behavior for the correlation length and the order parameter in contrast to the usual power laws. The nature of the transition shows a striking similarity to the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We show that there is a whole class of longrange xy-models leading to such non-standard behavior.Parameterizing the divergencies in terms of the correlation length we are able to calculate the critical exponents. These exponents are correct in any loop order.

Long-Range Order in a Strictly Short-Range Quasi-2D XY Model: When Critical Fluctuations Matter

Minghui Hu, Chao Zhang, Da‐jun Zhang +3 more

The phase of spins in the quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) XY model has emerged as a topic of significant interest across multiple subfields of physics. Conventional wisdom, rooted in the Mermin-Wagner theorem and supported by existing paradigms, asserts that true long-range (LR) order is prohibited in q2D systems with continuous symmetries and short-range (SR) interactions. In this Letter, we propose a strictly SR q2D XY model defined on a plane perpendicularly intersected by a group of parallel planes, where each plane consists of XY spins coupled via nearest-neighbor interactions. Through large-scale Monte Carlo simulations complemented by finite-size scaling analysis, we establish the complete phase diagram of the setup. A LR ordered phase emerges in the q2D model when the spins on the parallel planes develop a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless critical phase. The LR ordered phase is anisotropic: true LR correlations develop exclusively along the direction of the intersection lines, while the perpendicular direction exhibits quasi-long-range order. Furthermore, the LR order exhibits Goldstone-mode physics. Our findings reveal a mechanism for stabilizing LR order in low-dimensional systems with continuous symmetries, thereby establishing a new platform for studying exotic superfluidity.

Crossover in the ordered phase in the non-Mermin-Wagner-Hohenberg regime of spin models with long-range coupling

Jiewei Ding, Jiahao Su, Ho-Kin Tang +1 more

Continuous spin models with long-range interactions of the form r^{-σ}, where r is the distance between two spins and σ controls the decay of the interaction, exhibit enhanced order that competes with thermal fluctuations, leading to a wide variety of phases and types of phase transitions. Here, we identify that the true long-range ordered phase encompasses distinct scaling regimes, which we term enhanced long-range ordered (EnLRO) and reduced long-range ordered (ReLRO) regimes. In the former regime, the spin-spin correlation function decays exponentially to a finite value, whereas in the latter regime it decays algebraically to a finite value. In the one-dimensional XY model, the crossover from EnLRO to ReLRO regimes occurs around σ≈1.575, while in two dimensions, the crossover happens near σ≈3.2. Applying finite-size scaling analysis, we extract the critical exponents that characterize the order-to-disorder phase transitions in the EnLRO and ReLRO regimes, constructing comprehensive phase diagrams. The analysis is further extended to the one- and two-dimensional long-range Heisenberg models, where we find the EnLRO-ReLRO crossover at σ≈1.575 and σ≈3.22, respectively. The similar crossover points suggest that the distinction between EnLRO and ReLRO regimes is a generic feature in continuous spin models with long-range interactions. The persistence of EnLRO regime can be attributed to the interplay between the short-range spin wave and the long-range order.
