Exact work statistics of quantum quenches in the anisotropic XY model

Abstract

We derive exact analytic expressions for the average work done and work fluctuations in instantaneous quenches of the ground and thermal states of a one-dimensional anisotropic XY model. The average work and a quantum fluctuation relation is used to determine the amount of irreversible entropy produced during the quench, eventually revealing how the closing of the excitation gap leads to increased dissipated work. The work fluctuation is calculated and shown to exhibit nonanalytic behavior as the prequench anisotropy parameter and transverse field are tuned across quantum critical points. Exact compact formulas for the average work and work fluctuation in ground state quenches of the transverse field Ising model allow us to calculate the first singular field derivative at the critical field values.

Exact calculation of the average work done in a quenched quantum Ising model

Salvador T. Laurente, Francis N. C. Paraan

The main aim of this paper is to calculate the average work done in a ground state quench of the XY Heisenberg model in the transverse field quantum Ising limit. We obtain an exact closed form expression for the average work done in terms of complete elliptic integrals. This result reveals an inflection point at a pre-quench field that satisfies |h0| = 1, which signals quantum criticality.

Detailed Calculation of the Average Work Done in a Ground State Quench of the Quantum Ising Model

Francis N.C. Paraan

A detailed derivation of the exact expression for the average work done in a transverse field quench of the quantum Ising model ground state is presented. In the thermodynamic limit, it is proved that the average work done generally has inflection points at the critical field for the pre-quench quantum phase transition. The first divergent field derivative is calculated and is shown to diverge logarithmically. We also demonstrate that the average work done is equal to the product of the transverse magnetization of the pre-quench ground state and the change in the magnetic field.

Quenching dynamics of a quantum XY spin- 12 chain in a transverse field

Victor Mukherjee, Uma Divakaran, Amit Dutta +1 more

We study the quantum dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ anisotropic $XY$ model in a transverse field when the transverse field or the anisotropic interaction is quenched at a slow but uniform rate. The two quenching schemes are called transverse and anisotropic quenching, respectively. Our emphasis in this paper is on the anisotropic quenching scheme, and we compare the results with those of the other scheme. In the process of anisotropic quenching, the system crosses all the quantum critical lines of the phase diagram where the relaxation time diverges. The evolution is nonadiabatic in the time interval when the parameters are close to their critical values, and is adiabatic otherwise. The density of defects produced due to nonadiabatic transitions is calculated by mapping the many-particle system to an equivalent Landau-Zener problem and is generally found to vary as $1∕\sqrt{\ensuremath{\tau}}$, where $\ensuremath{\tau}$ is the characteristic time scale of quenching, a scenario that supports the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. Interestingly, in the case of anisotropic quenching, there exists an additional nonadiabatic transition, in comparison to the transverse quenching case, with the corresponding probability peaking at an incommensurate value of the wave vector. In the special case in which the system passes through a multicritical point, the defect density is found to vary as $1∕{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{1∕6}$. The von Neumann entropy of the final state is shown to maximize at a quenching rate around which the ordering of the final state changes from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic.

Asymptotic work statistics of periodically driven Ising chains

Angelo Russomanno, Shraddha Sharma, Amit Dutta +1 more

We study the work statistics of a periodically-driven integrable closed quantum system, addressing in particular the role played by the presence of a quantum critical point. Taking the example of a one-dimensional transverse Ising model in the presence of a spatially homogeneous but periodically time-varying transverse field of frequency , we arrive at the characteristic cumulant generating function G ( u ), which is then used to calculate the work distribution function P ( W ). By applying the Floquet theory we show that, in the infinite time limit, P ( W ) converges, starting from the initial ground state, towards an asymptotic steady state value whose small- W behaviour depends only on the properties of the small-wave-vector modes and on a few important ingredients: the time-averaged value of the transverse field, h 0 , the initial transverse field, , and the equilibrium quantum critical point , which we find to generate a sequence of non-equilibrium critical points , with l integer. When , we find a ‘universal’ edge singularity in P ( W ) at a threshold value of which is entirely determined by . The form of that singularity—Dirac delta derivative or square root—depends on h 0 being or not at a non-equilibrium critical point h * l . On the contrary, when , G ( u ) decays as a power-law for large u , leading to different types of edge singularity at . Generalizing our calculations to the case in which we initialize the system in a finite temperature density matrix, the irreversible entropy generated by the periodic driving is also shown to reach a steady state value in the infinite time limit.

Work statistics and thermal phase transitions

Ze-Zhou Zhang, Wei Wu

Many previous studies have demonstrated that work statistics can exhibit certain singular behaviors in the quantum critical regimes of many-body systems at zero or very low temperatures. However, as the temperature increases, it is commonly believed that such singularities will vanish. Contrary to this common recognition, we report a nonanalytic behavior of the averaged work done, which occurs at finite temperature, in the Dicke model as well as the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model subjected to the sudden quenches of their work parameters. It is revealed that work statistics can be viewed as a signature of the thermal phase transition when the quenched parameters are tuned across the critical line that separates two different thermal phases.

Effects of multisite interaction on nonequilibrium thermodynamics of XY spin chain in a transverse filed

Zhi He, Min Yu, Qiong Wang

In recent years, the property of nonequilibrium thermodynamics in closed system, especially in spin chain system undergoing a quenching process, has become one of the hot topics in the quantum thermodynamics. The nonequilibrium thermodynamic properties of XY spin chain with XZX + YZY type of three-site interaction under a transverse field are studied by considering an exactly solvable model. First we review some basic concepts, i.e., the work distribution, the averaged work, the fluctuation of work, and the irreversible entropy in the nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and give the theoretical model and its solutions. Then, we concretely discuss the effects of the three-site interaction of XZX + YZY type on the average work, the fluctuation of work and the irreversible entropy in the extended XY chain undergoing a quench process. The theoretical calculation and numerical simulation show that the three-site interaction of XZX + YZY type may play a positive and negative role in the increase of the averaged work, which depends on the strength of initial external magnetic field. Moreover, we also find that work fluctuation can be effectively suppressed by adjusting the intensity of XZX + YZY three-site interaction. Finally, it is found that the irreversible entropy production presents a sharp peak characteristic near the critical magnetic field, and the value of the peak sharp decreases with the increase of XZX + YZY three-site interaction. Simultaneously, the corresponding physical explanations are also given. In a word, the results given in present paper may increasingly arouse one’s interest in the nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics.
