Entanglement renormalization and integral geometry

Abstract

We revisit the applications of integral geometry in AdS3 and argue that the metric of the kinematic space can be realized as the entanglement contour, which is defined as the additive entanglement density. From the renormalization of the entanglement contour, we can holographically understand the operations of disentangler and isometry in multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz. Furthermore, a renormalization group equation of the long-distance entanglement contour is then derived. We then generalize this integral geometric construction to higher dimensions and in particular demonstrate how it works in bulk space of homogeneity and isotropy.

Holographic Geometry of Entanglement Renormalization in Quantum Field Theories

Masahiro Nozaki A, Shinsei Ryu, Tadashi Takayanagi +1 more

We study a conjectured connection between AdS/CFT and a real-space quantum renormalization group scheme, the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). By making a close contact with the holographic formula of the entanglement entropy, we propose a general definition of the metric in the MERA in the extra holographic direction. The metric is formulated purely in terms of quantum field theoretical data. Using the continuum version of the MERA (cMERA), we calculate this emergent holographic metric explicitly for free scalar boson and free fermions theories, and check that the metric so computed has the properties expected from AdS/CFT. We also discuss the cMERA in a time-dependent background induced by quantum quench and estimate its corresponding metric.

Holographic entanglement contour, bit threads, and the entanglement tsunami

Jonah Kudler-Flam, Ian MacCormack, Shinsei Ryu

Abstract We study the entanglement contour, a quasi-local measure of entanglement, and propose a generic formula for the contour in 1 + 1d quantum systems. We use this formalism to investigate the real space entanglement structure of various static CFTs as well as local and global quantum quenches. The global quench elucidates the spatial distribution of entanglement entropy in strongly interacting CFTs and clarifies the interpretation of the entanglement tsunami picture. The entanglement tsunami effectively characterizes the non-local growth of entanglement entropy while the contour characterizes the local propagation of entanglement. We generalize the formula for the entanglement contour to arbitrary dimensions and entangling surface geometries using bit threads, and are able to realize a holographic contour for logarithmic negativity and the entanglement of purification by restricting the bulk spacetime to the entanglement wedge. Furthermore, we explore the connections between the entanglement contour, bit threads, and entanglement density in kinematic space.

Entanglement renormalization and holography

Brian G. Swingle

We show how recent progress in real space renormalization group methods can be used to define a generalized notion of holography inspired by holographic dualities in quantum gravity. The generalization is based upon organizing information in a quantum state in terms of scale and defining a higher-dimensional geometry from this structure. While states with a finite correlation length typically give simple geometries, the state at a quantum critical point gives a discrete version of anti-de Sitter space. Some finite temperature quantum states include black hole-like objects. The gross features of equal time correlation functions are also reproduced.

Timelike entanglement entropy in dS3/CFT2

Xin Jiang, Peng Wang, Houwen Wu +1 more

Abstract In the context of dS3/CFT2, we propose a timelike entanglement entropy defined by the renormalization group flow. This timelike entanglement entropy is calculated in CFT by using the Callan-Symanzik equation. We find an exact match between this entanglement entropy and the length of a timelike geodesic connecting two different spacelike surfaces in dS3. The counterpart of this entanglement entropy in AdS3 is a spacelike one, also induced by RG flow and extends all the way into the bulk of AdS3. As a result, in both AdS3/CFT2 and dS3/CFT2, there exist exactly three entanglement entropies, providing precisely sufficient information to reconstruct the three-dimensional bulk geometry.

Proof of the Holographic Formula for Entanglement Entropy

Fursaev, D V

Entanglement entropy for a spatial partition of a quantum system is studied in theories which admit a dual description in terms of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity one dimension higher. A general proof of the holographic formula which relates the entropy to the area of a codimension 2 minimal hypersurface embedded in the bulk AdS space is given. The entanglement entropy is determined by a partition function which is defined as a path integral over Riemannian AdS geometries with non-trivial boundary conditions. The topology of the Riemannian spaces puts restrictions on the choice of the minimal hypersurface for a given boundary conditions. The entanglement entropy is also considered in Randall-Sundrum braneworld models where its asymptotic expansion is derived when the curvature radius of the brane is much larger than the AdS radius. Special attention is payed to the geometrical structure of anomalous terms in the entropy in four dimensions. Modification of the holographic formula by the higher curvature terms in the bulk is briefly discussed.

Bulk emergence and the RG flow of entanglement entropy

Thomas Faulkner

We further develop perturbative methods used to calculate entanglement entropy (EE) away from an interacting CFT fixed point. At second order we find certain universal terms in the renormalized EE which were predicted previously from holography and which we find hold universally for relevant deformations of any CFT in any dimension. We use both replica methods and direct methods to calculate the EE and in both cases find a non-local integral expression involving the CFT two point function. We show that this integral expression can be written as a local integral over a higher dimensional bulk modular hamiltonian in an emergent AdS space-time. This bulk modular hamiltonian is associated to an emergent scalar field dual to the deforming operator. We generalize to arbitrary spatially dependent couplings where a linearized metric emerges naturally as a way of efficiently encoding the field theory entanglement: by demanding that Einstein’s equations coupled to the bulk scalar field are satisfied, we show that EE can be calculated as the area of this metric. Not only does this show a direct emergence of a higher dimensional gravitational theory from any CFT, it allows for effective evaluation of the the integrals required to calculate EE perturbativly. Our results can also be interpreted as relating the non-locality of the modular hamiltonian for a spherical region in non-CFTs and the non-locality of the holographic bulk to boundary map.
