Abstract

Recently, the authors of the commented PRL presented the $ N=\infty $ solution of the $ U(1)/Z_2 $ Dicke model studied by us previously. Here we point out that (1) The authors missed an important transformation relating the two parameter regimes, so their separate discussions on the two regimes is redundant. (2) Both $ N=\infty $ classical limit and $ 1/N $ quantum fluctuations have been achieved in two of our previously published papers. It is the $ 1/N $ quantum fluctuations which lead to the non-trivial new quantum phenomena. In view of only a few $ N=2\sim 9 $ qubits inside a circuit QED microwave cavity, they can be tested in near future experiments. (3) Several possible experimental implementations of the $ U(1)/Z_2 $ Dicke model have been proposed before and recently experimentally realized.

Controlling discrete and continuous symmetries in 'superradiant' phase transitions

Alexandre Baksic, Cristiano Ciuti

We explore theoretically the physics of a collection of two-level systems coupled to a single-mode bosonic field in the non-standard configuration where each (artificial) atom is coupled to both field quadratures of the boson mode. We determine the rich phase diagram showing 'superradiant' phases with different symmetries. We demonstrate that it is possible to pass from a discrete, parity-like $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry to a continuous U(1) symmetry even in the ultrastrong coupling regime where the rotating wave approximation for the interaction between field and two-level systems is no longer applicable. By applying this general paradigm, we propose a scheme for the experimental implementation of such continuous U(1) symmetry in circuit QED systems, with the appearance of photonic Goldstone and amplitude modes above a critical point.

Universal fluctuations and squeezing in a generalized Dicke model near the superradiant phase transition

D. S. Shapiro, W. V. Pogosov, Yu. E. Lozovik

In view of recent proposals for the realization of anisotropic light-matter interaction in such platforms as (i) nonstationary or inductively and capacitively coupled superconducting qubits, (ii) atoms in crossed fields, and (iii) semiconductor heterostructures with spin-orbital interaction, the concept of a generalized Dicke model, where coupling strengths of rotating wave and counter-rotating wave terms are unequal, has attracted great interest. For this model we study photon fluctuations in the critical region of normal-to-superradiant phase transition when both the temperatures and numbers of two-level systems are finite. In this case, the superradiant quantum phase transition is changed to a fluctuational region in the phase diagram that reveals two types of critical behaviors. These are regimes of Dicke model (with discrete ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry), and that of anti-Tavis-Cummings and Tavis-Cummings $U(1)$ models. We show that squeezing parameters of photon condensate in these regimes show distinct temperature scalings. Besides, relative fluctuations of a photon number take universal values. We also find a temperature scale below which one approaches a zero-temperature quantum phase transition where quantum fluctuations dominate. Our effective theory is provided by a non-Goldstone functional for condensate mode and by Majorana representation of Pauli operators. We also discuss the Bethe ansatz solution for integrable $U(1)$ limits.

Controlling Discrete and Continuous Symmetries in “Superradiant” Phase Transitions with Circuit QED Systems

Alexandre Baksic, Cristiano Ciuti

We explore theoretically the physics of a collection of two-level systems coupled to a single-mode bosonic field in the nonstandard configuration where each (artificial) atom is coupled to both field quadratures of the boson mode. We show that such an unusual coupling scheme can be implemented in circuit QED systems, where artificial Josephson atoms are coupled both capacitively and inductively to a superconducting resonator. We demonstrate that it is possible to pass from a discrete, paritylike Z(2) symmetry to a continuous U(1) with the appearance of photonic Goldstone and amplitude modes above a critical point even in the ultrastrong coupling regime (where the rotating wave approximation for the interaction between field and two-level systems is no longer applicable). We determine the rich phase diagram showing "superradiant" phases with different symmetries and phase boundaries of both first and second order.

Superradiant quantum phase transition in a circuit QED system: a revisit from a fully microscopic point of view

Dazhi Xu, Yuan Gao, Chuan Sun

In order to examine whether or not the quantum phase transition of Dicke type exists in realistic systems, we revisit the model setup of the superconducting circuit QED from a microscopic many-body perspective based on the BCS theory with pseudo-spin presentation. By deriving the Dicke model with the correct charging terms from the minimum coupling principle, it is shown that the circuit QED system can exhibit superradiant quantum phase transition in the limit N\rightarrow\infty. The critical point could be reached at easiness by adjusting the extra parameters, the ratio of Josephson capacitance C_{J} to gate capacitance C_{g}, as well as the conventional one, the ratio of Josephson energy E_{J} to charging energy E_{C}.

Phase transitions in Dicke models

Klaus Hepp

Dicke models are important caricatures of non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics (QED). The rigorous results on superradiance in closed and open Dicke models achieved 50 years ago by Lieb and Hepp still drive modern experimental and theoretical research in cavity QED and will be reviewed in this essay, together with more recent developments.
