Abstract

The three-band $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}d$ model of strongly correlated electrons interacting with optical phonons via diagonal and off-diagonal electron-phonon interactions is considered within the cluster perturbation theory. In the beginning, the exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian of a ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ cluster results in the construction of local polaronic eigenstates $\left|p\right\ensuremath{\rangle}$ with hole numbers ${n}_{h}=0,1,2$ per unit cell. The intercluster hoppings and interactions are exactly written in terms of Hubbard operators ${X}_{f}^{pq}=\left|p\right\ensuremath{\rangle}\ensuremath{\langle}q|$ determined via the multielectron polaronic eigenstates $\left|p\right\ensuremath{\rangle}$ at site $\mathbf{f}$. The Fermi-type single-electron quasiparticle dispersion and spectral weight are calculated for the undoped antiferromagnetic parent insulator like ${\mathrm{La}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$. The quasiparticle dispersion of Hubbard polarons is determined by a hybridization of the Hubbard fermion subbands with local Franck-Condon resonances so the main polaronic effect of the quasiparticle band structure is a splitting of the Hubbard bands on the number of Hubbard polaron subbands. Increasing of the EPI constant results in an increase of splitting, decrease of the subband width, transfer of the spectral weight to high-energy multiphonon excitations, and subsequent localization of the charge carriers. Herewith, the effect of such renormalization for the conduction band and the valence one differs depending on the ratio of the diagonal and off-diagonal EPI. In the framework of the GTB method, the Franck-Condon broadening of the spectral function of polaronic excitations is also reproduced for strongly correlated systems with strong electron-phonon interaction.

Cooperative effect of doping and temperature on the polaronic band structure in strongly correlated electron systems with strong electron-phonon interaction

I. A. Makarov, Sergei G. Ovchinnikov

In this work we investigate doping and temperature dependences of electronic structure of system with strong electronic correlations and strong electron-phonon interaction modeling cuprates in the frameworks of the three-band p-d-Holstein model by a polaronic version of the generalized tight binding (GTB) method. Within this approach the electronic structure is formed by polaronic quasiparticles constructed as excitations between initial and final polaronic multielectron states. Doping and temperature effects are taken into account by occupation numbers of local excited polaronic states and variations in the magnitude of spin-spin correlation functions. Both effects are manifested in the reconstruction of band structure, Fermi contours, density of states and redistribution of the spectral weight over the Hubbard polaron subbands. Doping leads to transformation of Fermi contour from small hole pockets around k=(pi/2,pi/2) with inhomogeneous spectral weight distribution at small hole concentration to large contour around k=(pi,pi) in the overdoped compound as a result of two quantum phase transitions. In the system with phonon subsystem and EPI doping results in the top of the valence band splitting off and new polaron subbands appearance. Temperature increasing in the system with doped holes and moderate EPI leads to formation of the flatband around k=(pi,pi) and transfer of the spectral weight to the splitted off top of the valence band.

Temperature dependence of the polaronic band structure in strongly correlated electron systems with strong electron-phonon interaction

Temperature increasing leads to broadening of the spectral function peak at the top of the valence band, shift of the peak, the decreasing of the peak intensity, the growth of bandwidth and reduction of the insulator energy gap. These effects are in a qualitative agreement to the temperature dependence of the ARPES spectra observed in the undoped HTSC cuprates.

Polaronic Quasiparticles in a Strongly Correlated Electron Band

Winfried Koller, Alex C. Hewson, David M. Edwards

We show that a strongly renormalized band of polaronic quasiparticle excitations is induced at the Fermi level of an interacting many-electron system on increasing the coupling of the electrons to local phonons. We give results for the local density of states at zero temperature both for the electrons and phonons. The polaronic quasiparticles satisfy Luttinger's theorem for all regimes considered, and their dispersion shows a kink similar to that observed experimentally in copper oxides. Our calculations are based on the dynamical mean field theory and the numerical renormalization group for the hole-doped Holstein-Hubbard model and large on-site repulsion.

Effects of Polaronic States in the Multiband Hubbard Model

A. Dobry, A. Greco, J. Lorenzana +2 more

The effects of electron-lattice coupling in a multiband Hubbard model are investigated by exact diagonalization. For a system with one doped hole, and with parameters relevant to cuprate superconductors, we find a continuous transition from a delocalized to a small polaron state at a critical value of the electron-phonon interaction. We characterize this state as a Zhang-Rice singlet with distortions in the CuO4 cluster. We find, in addition, a polaronic shift of the band near the Fermi level in the spectral function of the system. An enhancement of the transfer of the low-energy spectral weight is also observed. These results are in qualitative agreement with different spectroscopic measurements for high-T(c) superconductors.

Polarons and bipolarons in strongly interacting electron-phonon systems

Gerhard Wellein, Heinrich Röder, Holger Fehske

The Holstein Hubbard and Holstein t-J models are studied for a wide range of phonon frequencies, electron-electron, and electron-phonon interaction strengths on finite lattices with up to ten sites by means of direct Lanczos diagonalization. Previously the necessary truncation of the phononic Hilbert space caused serious limitations to either very small systems (four or even two sites) or to weak electron-phonon coupling, in particular in the adiabatic regime. Using parallel computers we were able to investigate the transition from ``large'' to ``small'' polarons in detail. By resolving the low-lying eigenstates of the Hamiltonian and by calculating the spectral function, we can identify a polaron band in the strong-coupling case, whose dispersion deviates from the free-particle dispersion at low and intermediate phonon frequencies. For two electrons (holes) we establish the existence of bipolaronic states and discuss the formation of a bipolaron band. For the two-dimensional Holstein t-J model, we demonstrate that the formation of hole polarons is favored by strong Coulomb correlations. Analyzing hole-hole correlation functions, we find that hole binding is enhanced as a dynamical effect of the electron-phonon interaction. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
