Generation of entangled photon strings using NV centers in diamond

Abstract

We present a scheme to generate entangled photons using nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. We show how the long-lived nuclear spin in diamond can mediate entanglement between multiple photons, thereby increasing the length of the entangled photon string. With the proposed scheme one could generate both $n$-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and cluster states. We present an experimental scheme realizing the same and estimate the rate of entanglement generation both in the presence and absence of a cavity.

Heralded quantum-entanglement transfer based on photon absorption of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

Yong Zhang, Zhong Ding

As a kind of hybrid spin system, nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have shown great advantages in implementing quantum registers for quantum information processing (QIP). When scaling up quantum registers to quantum networks for long-distance quantum communication and distributed quantum computation, determining how to entangle two registers in distant nodes is a basic challenge in the absence of direct interactions. In this paper, we present a scheme for entangling two distant NV centers based on the special optical absorption and emission of NV centers. In this demonstration, we transfer the entanglement information of a pair of photons to nuclear spins in NV centers and create remote NV–NV entanglement mediated by entangled photons. We then explain how to extract the entangled information from NV centers to prepare on-demand entangled photons for optical quantum information processing. The strategy of entanglement transfer between spins and photons demonstrated herein may pave the way for an NV-center-based quantum network.

Long-range photon-mediated gate scheme between nuclear spin qubits in diamond

Adrian Auer, Guido Burkard

Defect centers in diamond are exceptional solid-state quantum systems that can have exceedingly long electron and nuclear spin coherence times. So far, single-qubit gates for the nitrogen nuclear spin, a two-qubit gate with a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center electron spin, and entanglement between nearby nitrogen nuclear spins have been demonstrated. Here, we develop a scheme to implement a universal two-qubit gate between two distant nitrogen nuclear spins. Virtual excitation of an NV center that is embedded in an optical cavity can scatter a laser photon into the cavity mode; we show that this process depends on the nuclear spin state of the nitrogen atom. If two NV centers are simultaneously coupled to a common cavity mode and individually excited, virtual cavity photon exchange can mediate an effective interaction between the nuclear spin qubits, conditioned on the spin state of both nuclei, which implements a universal controlled-$\mathit{Z}$ gate. We predict operation times below $10\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$, which is four orders of magnitude faster than the decoherence time of nuclear spin qubits in diamond.

Large-scale cluster state generation with nuclear spins in diamonds

Qiong Chen, Mang Feng, Jiangfeng Du +1 more

The cluster state is an indispensable resource for one-way quantum computing (1WQC). We propose a practical scheme for constructing cluster states among nuclear spins in nitrogen-vacancy defect centres (NV centres) in different diamonds. The entanglement of nuclear spins within an NV centre is made by hyperfine coupling via electron spin, and the entanglement between remote NV centres is accomplished using the parity projection of emitted photons. We discus the possibility to build large-scale nuclear-spin cluster states with diamonds.

Creation of quantum entanglement with two separate diamond nitrogen vacancy centers coupled to a photonic molecule

Siping Liu, Rong Yu, Jiahua Li +1 more

We explore the entanglement generation and the corresponding dynamics between two separate nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond nanocrystal coupled to a photonic molecule consisting of a pair of coupled photonic crystal (PC) cavities. By calculating the entanglement concurrence with readily available experimental parameters, it is found that the entanglement degree strongly depends on the cavity-cavity hopping strength and the NV-center-cavity detuning. High concurrence peak and long-lived entanglement plateau can be achieved by properly adjusting practical system parameters. Meanwhile, we also discuss the influence of the coupling strength between the NV centers and the cavity modes on the behavior of the concurrence. Such a PC-NV system can be employed for quantum entanglement generation and represents a building block for an integrated nanophotonic network in a solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics platform. In addition, the present theory can also be applied to other similar systems, such as two single quantum emitters positioned close to a microtoroidal resonator with the whispering-gallery-mode fields propagating inside the resonator.

Quantum-entanglement storage and extraction in quantum network node

ZhuoYu Shan, Yong Zhang

Quantum computing and quantum communication have become the most popular research topic. Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have been shown the great advantage of implementing quantum information processing. The generation of entanglement between NV centers represents a fundamental prerequisite for all quantum information technologies. In this paper, we propose a scheme to realize the high-fidelity storage and extraction of quantum entanglement information based on the NV centers at room temperature. We store the entangled information of a pair of entangled photons in the Bell state into the nuclear spins of two NV centers, which can make these two NV centers entangled. And then we illuminate how to extract the entangled information from NV centers to prepare on-demand entangled states for optical quantum information processing. The strategy of engineering entanglement demonstrated here maybe pave the way towards a NV center-based quantum network.
