Abstract

We study the contribution to the entanglement entropy of (2+1)-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) coming from a sharp corner in the entangling surface. This contribution is encoded in a function a(θ) of the corner opening angle, and was recently proposed as a measure of the degrees of freedom in the underlying CFT. We show that the ratio a(θ)/C(T), where C(T) is the central charge in the stress tensor correlator, is an almost universal quantity for a broad class of theories including various higher-curvature holographic models, free scalars, and fermions, and Wilson-Fisher fixed points of the O(N) models with N=1,2,3. Strikingly, the agreement between these different theories becomes exact in the limit θ→π, where the entangling surface approaches a smooth curve. We thus conjecture that the corresponding ratio is universal for general CFTs in three dimensions.

Universal corner entanglement from twist operators

Pablo Bueno, Robert C. Myers, William Witczak‐Krempa

The entanglement entropy in three-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) receives a logarithmic contribution characterized by a regulator-independent function a(θ) when the entangling surface contains a sharp corner with opening angle θ. In the limit of a smooth surface (θ → π), this corner contribution vanishes as a(θ) = σ(θ − π)2. In arXiv:1505.04804 , we provided evidence for the conjecture that for any d = 3 CFT, this corner coefficient σ is determined by C T , the coefficient appearing in the two-point function of the stress tensor. Here, we argue that this is an instance of a much more general relation connecting the analogous corner coefficient σ n appearing in the nth Rényi entropy and the scaling dimension h n of the corresponding twist operator. In particular, we find the simple relation h n /σ n = (n − 1)π. We show how it reduces to our previous result as n → 1, and explicitly check its validity for free scalars and fermions. With this new relation, we show that as n → 0, σ n yields the coefficient of the thermal entropy, c S . We also reveal a surprising duality relating the corner coefficients of the scalar and the fermion. Further, we use our result to predict σ n for holographic CFTs dual to four-dimensional Einstein gravity. Our findings generalize to other dimensions, and we emphasize the connection to the interval Rényi entropies of d = 2 CFTs.

Bounds on corner entanglement in quantum critical states

Pablo Bueno, William Witczak‐Krempa

The entanglement entropy in many gapless quantum systems receives a contribution from the corners in the entangling surface in 2+1d, which is characterized by a universal function $a(\ensuremath{\theta})$ depending on the opening angle $\ensuremath{\theta}$, and contains pertinent low energy information. For conformal field theories (CFTs), the leading expansion coefficient in the smooth limit $\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}$ yields the stress tensor two-point function coefficient ${C}_{T}$. Little is known about $a(\ensuremath{\theta})$ beyond that limit. Here, we show that the next term in the smooth limit expansion contains information beyond the two- and three-point correlators of the stress tensor. We conjecture that it encodes four-point data, making it much richer. Further, we establish strong constraints on this and higher-order smooth-limit coefficients. We also show that $a(\ensuremath{\theta})$ is lower-bounded by a nontrivial function multiplied by the central charge ${C}_{T}$, e.g., $a(\ensuremath{\pi}/2)\ensuremath{\ge}({\ensuremath{\pi}}^{2}ln2){C}_{T}/6$. This bound for 90-degree corners is nearly saturated by all known results, including recent numerics for the interacting Wilson-Fisher quantum critical points (QCPs). A bound is also given for the R\'enyi entropies. We illustrate our findings using $\text{O}(N)$ QCPs, free boson and Dirac fermion CFTs, strongly coupled holographic ones, and other models. Exact results are also given for Lifshitz quantum critical points, and for conical singularities in 3+1d.

A holographic proof of the universality of corner entanglement for CFTs

Rong-Xin Miao

There appears a universal logarithmic term of entanglement entropy, i.e., −a(Ω)log(H/δ), for 3d CFTs when the entangling surface has a sharp corner. a(Ω) is a function of the corner opening angle and behaves as a(Ω → π) ≃ σ(π − Ω)2 and a(Ω → 0) ≃ κ/Ω, respectively. Recently, it is conjectured that σ/C T = π 2 /24, where C T is central charge in the stress tensor correlator, is universal for general CFTs in three dimensions. In this paper, by applying the general higher curvature gravity, we give a holographic proof of this conjecture. We also clarify some interesting problems. Firstly, we find that, in contrast to σ/C T , κ/C T is not universal. Secondly, the lower bound a E (Ω)/C T associated to Einstein gravity can be violated by higher curvature gravity. Last but not least, we find that there are similar universal laws for CFTs in higher dimensions. We give some holographic tests of these new conjectures.

Universal entanglement of singular surfaces

Pablo Bueno, Robert Cobb Myers, William Witczak‐Krempa

In general three‐dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), the entanglement entropy receives a logarithmic contribution whenever the entangling surface contains a sharp corner of opening angle θ. Such contribution is controlled by a regulator‐independent function which vanishes as in the smooth‐surface limit ( ). We review our recent conjecture that for general three‐dimensional CFTs, this corner coefficient σ is determined by CT, the coefficient appearing in the two‐point function of the stress tensor through the relation . We also comment on the extension of this conjecture to general Rényi entropies and higher‐dimensional CFTs.

Universal entanglement for higher dimensional cones

Pablo Bueno, Robert Cobb Myers

The entanglement entropy of a generic d-dimensional conformal field theory receives a regulator independent contribution when the entangling surface contains a (hyper)conical singularity of opening angle Ω, codified in a function a (d)(Ω). In arXiv:1505.04804 , we proposed that for three-dimensional conformal field theories, the coefficient σ (3) characterizing the limit where the surface becomes smooth is proportional to the central charge C T appearing in the two-point function of the stress tensor. In this paper, we prove this relation for general three-dimensional holographic theories, and extend the result to general dimensions. In particular, we define a generalized coefficient σ (d) to characterize the almost smooth limit of a (hyper)conical singularity in entangling surfaces in higher dimensions. We show then that this coefficient is universally related to C T for general holographic theories and provide a general formula for the ratio σ (d) /C T in arbitrary dimensions. We conjecture that the latter ratio is universal for general CFTs. Further, based on our recent results in arXiv:1507.06997 , we propose an extension of this relation to general Rényi entropies, which we show passes several consistency checks in d = 4 and 6.

Generalizing the entanglement entropy of singular regions in conformal field theories

Pablo Bueno, Horacio Casini, William Witczak‐Krempa

A bstract We study the structure of divergences and universal terms of the entanglement and Rényi entropies for singular regions. First, we show that for (3 + 1)-dimensional free conformal field theories (CFTs), entangling regions emanating from vertices give rise to a universal contribution $$ {S}_n^{\mathrm{univ}}=-\frac{1}{8\pi }{f}_b(n){\int}_{\gamma }{k}^2{\log}^2\left(R/\delta \right) $$ S n univ = − 1 8 π f b n ∫ γ k 2 log 2 R / δ , where γ is the curve formed by the intersection of the entangling surface with a unit sphere centered at the vertex, and k the trace of its extrinsic curvature. While for circular and elliptic cones this term reproduces the general-CFT result, it vanishes for polyhedral corners. For those, we argue that the universal contribution, which is logarithmic, is not controlled by a local integral, but rather it depends on details of the CFT in a complicated way. We also study the angle dependence for the entanglement entropy of wedge singularities in 3+1 dimensions. This is done for general CFTs in the smooth limit, and using free and holographic CFTs at generic angles. In the latter case, we show that the wedge contribution is not proportional to the entanglement entropy of a corner region in the (2 + 1)-dimensional holographic CFT. Finally, we show that the mutual information of two regions that touch at a point is not necessarily divergent, as long as the contact is through a sufficiently sharp corner. Similarly, we provide examples of singular entangling regions which do not modify the structure of divergences of the entanglement entropy compared with smooth surfaces.
