Many-particle dynamics of bosons and fermions in quasi-one-dimensional flat-band lattices

M J Hyrkäs, V. Apaja, M. Manninen

The difference between boson and fermion dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional lattices is studied by calculating the persistent current in small quantum rings and by exact simulations of the time evolution of the many-particle state in two cases: expansion of a localized cloud and collisions in a Newton's cradle. We consider three different lattices which in the tight-binding model exhibit flat bands. The physical realization is considered to be an optical lattice with bosonic or fermionic atoms. The atoms are assumed to interact with a repulsive short-range interaction. The different statistics of bosons and fermions lead to different dynamics. Spinless fermions are easily trapped in the flat-band states due to the Pauli exclusion principle, which prevents them from interacting, while bosons are able to push each other out from the flat-band states.

Interaction-induced topological properties of two bosons in flat-band systems

G. Pelegrí, A. M. Marques, V. Ahufinger +2 more

This work explores the properties of two interacting bosons in a flat-band system. The authors show how collective particle motion processes mediated by interactions can lead to a variety of two-body topological states. Furthermore, they identify a set of bound states that remain localized in a small region of the lattice for arbitrarily large interactions.

Topological quantum phase transitions and topological flat bands on the star lattice

Wen-Chao Chen, Ru Liu, Yi-Fei Wang +1 more

We study a tight-binding model on the two-dimensional star lattice (also called the decorated honeycomb lattice) with short-range hoppings modulated by staggered fluxes. We observe a series of topological quantum phase transitions when tuning the hopping parameters, and find nontrivial topological bands with high Chern numbers. We also find in some parameter regions, the system exhibits the interesting topological flat bands with large flatness ratios of the band gaps over the bandwidths. We further illustrate the $1/2$ fractional quantum Hall effect of interacting hard-core bosons filled in a lowest topological flat band of the star lattice.
