Abstract

This paper is concerned with a translation invariant network of identical quantum stochastic systems subjected to external quantum noise. Each node of the network is directly coupled to a finite number of its neighbours. This network is modelled as an open quantum harmonic oscillator and is governed by a set of linear quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs). The dynamic variables of the network satisfy the canonical commutation relations (CCRs). Similar large-scale networks can be found, for example, in quantum metamaterials and optical lattices. Using spatial Fourier transform techniques, we obtain a sufficient condition for stability of the network with a finite interaction range, and consider a mean square performance index for the stable network in the thermodynamic limit. In the case when the network consists of one-mode oscillators, the Peres-Horodecki-Simon separability criterion is employed in order to obtain sufficient and necessary conditions for quantum entanglement of bipartite systems of nodes in the Gaussian invariant state. The results on stability and entanglement are extended to the infinite chain of the linear quantum systems by letting the number of nodes go to infinity. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the results.

Decentralized Coherent Quantum Control Design for Translation Invariant Linear Quantum Stochastic Networks with Direct Coupling

Arash Kh. Sichani, Igor G. Vladimirov, Ian R. Petersen

This paper is concerned with coherent quantum control design for translation invariant networks of identical quantum stochastic systems subjected to external quantum noise. The network is modelled as an open quantum harmonic oscillator and is governed by a set of linear quantum stochastic differential equations. The dynamic variables of this quantum plant satisfy the canonical commutation relations. Similar large-scale systems can be found, for example, in quantum metamaterials and optical lattices. The problem under consideration is to design a stabilizing decentralized coherent quantum controller in the form of another translation invariant quantum system, directly coupled to the plant, so as to minimize a weighted mean square functional of the dynamic variables of the interconnected networks. We consider this problem in the thermodynamic limit of infinite network size and present first-order necessary conditions for optimality of the controller.

Physical Realizability and Mean Square Performance of Translation Invariant Networks of Interacting Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems

Igor G. Vladimirov, Ian R. Petersen

This paper is concerned with translation invariant networks of linear quantum stochastic systems with nearest neighbour interaction mediated by boson fields. The systems are associated with sites of a one-dimensional chain or a multidimensional lattice and are governed by coupled linear quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs). Such interconnections of open quantum systems are relevant, for example, to the phonon theory of crystalline solids, atom trapping in optical lattices and quantum metamaterials. In order to represent a large-scale open quantum harmonic oscillator, the coefficients of the coupled QSDEs must satisfy certain physical realizability conditions. These are established in the form of matrix algebraic equations for the parameters of an individual building block of the network and its interaction with the neighbours and external fields. We also discuss the computation of mean square performance functionals with block Toeplitz weighting matrices for such systems in the thermodynamic limit per site for unboundedly increasing fragments of the lattice.

Infinite-horizon risk-sensitive performance criteria for translation invariant networks of linear quantum stochastic systems

Igor G. Vladimirov, Ian R. Petersen

This paper is concerned with networks of identical linear quantum stochastic systems which interact with each other and external bosonic fields in a translation invariant fashion. The systems are associated with sites of a multidimensional lattice and are governed by coupled linear quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs). The block Toeplitz coefficients of these QSDEs are specified by the energy and coupling matrices which quantify the Hamiltonian and coupling operators for the component systems. We discuss the invariant Gaussian quantum state of the network when it satisfies a stability condition and is driven by statistically independent vacuum fields. A quadratic-exponential functional (QEF) is considered as a risk-sensitive performance criterion for a finite fragment of the network over a bounded time interval. This functional involves a quadratic function of dynamic variables of the component systems with a block Toeplitz weighting matrix. Assuming the invariant state, we study the spatio-temporal asymptotic rate of the QEF per unit time and per lattice site in the thermodynamic limit of unboundedly growing time horizons and fragments of the lattice. A spatio-temporal frequency-domain formula is obtained for the QEF rate in terms of two spectral functions associated with the real and imaginary parts of the invariant quantum covariance kernel of the network variables. A homotopy method and asymptotic expansions for evaluating the QEF rate are also discussed.

Invariant states of linear quantum stochastic systems under Weyl perturbations of the Hamiltonian and coupling operators

Igor G. Vladimirov, Ian R. Petersen, M. R. James

This paper is concerned with the sensitivity of invariant states in linear quantum stochastic systems with respect to nonlinear perturbations. The system variables are governed by a Markovian Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic differential equation (QSDE) driven by quantum Wiener processes of external bosonic fields in the vacuum state. The quadratic system Hamiltonian and the linear system-field coupling operators, corresponding to a nominal open quantum harmonic oscillator, are subject to perturbations represented in a Weyl quantization form. Assuming that the nominal linear QSDE has a Hurwitz dynamics matrix and using the Wigner-Moyal phase-space framework, we carry out an infinitesimal perturbation analysis of the quasi-characteristic function for the invariant quantum state of the nonlinear perturbed system. The resulting correction of the invariant states in the spatial frequency domain may find applications to their approximate computation, analysis of relaxation dynamics and non-Gaussian state generation in nonlinear quantum stochastic systems.

ASYMPTOTIC ENTANGLEMENT IN OPEN QUANTUM DYNAMICS

AURELIAN ISAR

In the framework of the theory of open systems based on completely positive quantum dynamical semigroups, we solve in the asymptotic long-time regime the master equation for two independent harmonic oscillators interacting with an environment. We give a description of the continuous-variable asymptotic entanglement in terms of the covariance matrix of the considered subsystem for an arbitrary Gaussian input state. Using Peres--Simon necessary and sufficient condition for separability of two-mode Gaussian states, we show that for certain classes of environments the initial state evolves asymptotically to an entangled equilibrium bipartite state, while for other values of the coefficients describing the environment, the asymptotic state is separable. We calculate also the logarithmic negativity characterizing the degree of entanglement of the asymptotic state.

Entanglement in open quantum dynamics

Aurelian Isar

In the framework of the theory of open systems based on completely positive quantum dynamical semigroups, we give a description of the continuous-variable entanglement for a system consisting of two independent harmonic oscillators interacting with a general environment. Using Peres-Simon necessary and sufficient criterion for separability of two-mode Gaussian states, we describe the generation and evolution of entanglement in terms of the covariance matrix for an arbitrary Gaussian input state. For some values of diffusion and dissipation coefficients describing the environment, the state keeps for all times its initial type: separable or entangled. In other cases, entanglement generation or entanglement collapse (entanglement sudden death) take place or even a periodic collapse and revival of entanglement. We show that for certain classes of environments the initial state evolves asymptotically to an entangled equilibrium bipartite state, while for other values of the coefficients describing the environment, the asymptotic state is separable. We calculate also the logarithmic negativity characterizing the degree of entanglement of the asymptotic state.
