Abstract

Tuning interactions in the spin singlet and quintet channels of two colliding atoms could change the symmetry of the one-dimensional spin-3/2 fermionic systems of ultracold atoms while preserving the integrability. Here we find a novel SO(4) symmetry integrable point in the spin-3/2 Fermi gas and derive the exact solution of the model using the Bethe ansatz. In contrast to the model with SU(4) and SO(5) symmetries, the present model with SO(4) symmetry preserves spin singlet and quintet Cooper pairs in two sets of SU(2)⊗SU(2) spin subspaces. We obtain full phase diagrams, including the Fulde–Ferrel–Larkin–Ovchinnikov like pair correlations, spin excitations and quantum criticality through the generalized Yang–Yang thermodynamic equations. In particular, various correlation functions are calculated by using finite-size corrections in the frame work of conformal field theory. Moreover, within the local density approximation, we further find that spin singlet and quintet pairs form subtle multiple shell structures in density profiles of the trapped gas.

Thermodynamics and correlation functions of integrable models in one-dimension

Jen Yee Lee

In this thesis, we investigate thermodynamic properties, magnetic phase transitions and correlation functions of integrable quantum many-body systems in the field of ultracold atomic gases. The scope of our investigation encompasses three models in one-dimension that are integrable by means of the Bethe ansatz method. They are the multi-component 5-interacting Fermi gas, the spin-l Bose gas with antiferromagnetic spin interaction and the SU(2) spinor Bose gas with finite-range Gaussian interaction. We derive the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations for the general SU(k) Fermi gas. We illustrate the root patterns and give a quantitative description of the ground state properties for the strongly and weakly interacting regimes. The thermodynamics and magnetic phase transitions are described quantitatively by means of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. We find that all phase transitions in the attractive regime are of second order with a linear field dependent magnetization in the vicinities of critical points. The SU(2) Fermi gas is studied in more detail. The low temperature thermodynamics for the repulsive case is derived by means of the Wiener-Hopf technique. Finite-size corrections and correlation functions for both the repulsive and attractive cases are derived from the nested Bethe ansatz equations and conformal field theory. In the attractive case, we show that spatial oscillations of the leading terms in the pair correlation function and spin correlation function solely depend on the mismatch between Fermi surfaces of spin-up and spin-down fermions. Such spatial modulations are characteristic of a Fulde- Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. For the spin-l Bose gas with antiferromagnetic spin interaction, we find that at zero temperature, the system exhibits three quantum phases: a phase with singlet pairs of bosons, a fully-polarized Tonks-Girardeau gas phase of unpaired ms = 1 bosons, and a mixed phase of singlet pairs and unpaired ms = 1 bosons. Phase transitions in the vicinities of the critical fields are also of second order with a linear field dependent magnetization. Finally, we use the asymptotic Bethe ansatz method to derive the quasimomenta distribution and ground state energy for the SU(2) spinor Bose gas with finite-range Gaussian interaction. We show that finite range potentials are more likely to lead to quasi Bose-Einstein condensation than zero range potentials by studying the spatial density profiles as the interaction width increases.

PHASE SEPARATION AND FFLO PHASES IN ULTRACOLD GAS OF S = 5/2 ATOMS WITH ATTRACTIVE POTENTIAL IN A ONE-DIMENSIONAL TRAP

P. Schlottmann, Andrei A. Zvyagin

In the context of ultracold atoms with effective spin S = 5/2 confined to an elongated trap we study the one-dimensional Fermi gas interacting via an attractive δ-function potential using the Bethe ansatz solution. There are N = 2S + 1 = 6 fundamental states: The particles can either be unpaired or clustered in bound states of 2, 3, …, 2S and 2S + 1 fermions. The rich ground state phase diagram consists of these six states and various mixed phases in which combinations of the fundamental states coexist. Possible scenarios for phase separation due to the harmonic confinement along the tube are explored within the local density approximation. In an array of tubes with weak Josephson tunneling superfluid order may arise. The response functions determining the type of superfluid order are calculated using conformal field theory and the exact Bethe ansatz solution. They consist of a power law with distance times a sinusoidal term oscillating with distance. The wavelength of the oscillations is related to the periodicity of a generalized Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state.

Paired states in spin-imbalanced atomic Fermi gases in one dimension

Paata Kakashvili, C. J. Bolech

A growing expertise to engineer, manipulate, and probe different cold-atom analogs of electronic condensed-matter systems allows to probe properties of exotic pairing. We study paired states of spin-imbalanced ultracold atomic system of fermions with attractive short-range interactions in one-dimensional traps. Calculations are done using the Bethe ansatz technique, and the trap is incorporated into the solution via a local-density approximation. The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations are solved numerically and different local-density profiles are calculated for zero and finite temperatures. A procedure to identify the homogeneous-system phase diagram using local-density profiles in the trap is also proposed. Such scheme would be immediately useful for the experiments.

Fermi gases in one dimension: From Bethe ansatz to experiments

Xi‐Wen Guan, Murray T. Batchelor, Chaohong Lee

This article reviews theoretical and experimental developments for one-dimensional Fermi gases. Specifically, the experimentally realized two-component delta-function interacting Fermi gas---the Gaudin-Yang model---and its generalizations to multicomponent Fermi systems with larger spin symmetries is discussed. The exact results obtained for Bethe ansatz integrable models of this kind enable the study of the nature and microscopic origin of a wide range of quantum many-body phenomena driven by spin population imbalance, dynamical interactions, and magnetic fields. This physics includes Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like pairing, Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids, spin-charge separation, Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov-like pair correlations, quantum criticality and scaling, polarons, and the few-body physics of the trimer state (trions). The fascinating interplay between exactly solved models and experimental developments in one dimension promises to yield further insight into the exciting and fundamental physics of interacting Fermi systems.

Fermi gas with attractive potential and spin S=32 in a one-dimensional trap: Response functions for superfluidity and FFLO signatures

P. Schlottmann, Andrei A. Zvyagin

In the context of a gas of ultracold atoms with effective spin $S=3/2$ confined to an elongated trap, we study the one-dimensional Fermi gas interacting via an attractive $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function potential within the grand-canonical ensemble. The particles can be either unbound or clustered in bound states of two, three, and four fermions. The rich $\ensuremath{\mu}$ versus $H$ ground-state phase diagram ($\ensuremath{\mu}$ is the chemical potential and $H$ the external magnetic field) consists of the four basic states and the various possible mixed phases in which some these states coexist. Extending the analysis of K. Yang [Phys. Rev. B 63, 140511(R) (2001)] for $S=1/2$, we study the correlation functions of the generalized Cooper clusters of bound states of two, three, and four particles using conformal field theory and the exact Bethe Ansatz solution. The correlation functions consist of a power law with distance times a sinusoidal term oscillating with distance. In an array of tubes with weak Josephson tunneling, the type of superfluid order is determined by these correlation functions. The wavelength of the oscillations is related to the periodicity of a generalized Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state for higher spin particles. All the relevant states are analyzed for $S=3/2$.

Attractive Fermi Gases with Unequal Spin Populations in Highly Elongated Traps

Giuliano Orso

We investigate two-component attractive Fermi gases with imbalanced spin populations in trapped one-dimensional configurations. The ground state properties are determined with the local density approximation, starting from the exact Bethe-ansatz equations for the homogeneous case. We predict that the atoms are distributed according to a two-shell structure: a partially polarized phase in the center of the trap and either a fully paired or a fully polarized phase in the wings. The partially polarized core is expected to be a superfluid of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov type. The size of the cloud as well as the critical spin polarization needed to suppress the fully paired shell are calculated as a function of the coupling strength.
