Abstract

In this work we study various notions of uncertainty for angular momentum in the spin- s representation of SU(2). We characterize the ‘uncertainty regions’ given by all vectors, whose components are specified by the variances of the three angular momentum components. A basic feature of this set is a lower bound for the sum of the three variances. We give a method for obtaining optimal lower bounds for uncertainty regions for general operator triples, and evaluate these for small s . Further lower bounds are derived by generalizing the technique by which Robertson obtained his state-dependent lower bound. These are optimal for large s , since they are saturated by states taken from the Holstein–Primakoff approximation. We show that, for all s , all variances are consistent with the so-called vector model, i.e., they can also be realized by a classical probability measure on a sphere of radius s ( s + 1 ) . Entropic uncertainty relations can be discussed similarly, but are minimized by different states than those minimizing the variances for small s . For large s the Maassen–Uffink bound becomes sharp and we explicitly describe the extremalizing states. Measurement uncertainty, as recently discussed by Busch, Lahti and Werner for position and momentum, is introduced and a generalized observable (POVM) which minimizes the worst case measurement uncertainty of all angular momentum components is explicitly determined, along with the minimal uncertainty. The output vectors for the optimal measurement all have the same length r ( s ) , where r ( s ) / s → 1 as s → ∞ .

Uncertainty relations for quantum particles

Σπυρίδων Κεχριμπάρης

The focus of the present investigation is uncertainty relations for quantum particles, which quantify the fundamental limitations on some of their properties due to their incompatibility. In the first, longer part, we are concerned with preparational uncertainty \nrelations, while in the second we touch upon measurement inequalities through a generalisation of a model of joint measurement of position and momentum. \nSpecifically, starting from a triple of canonical operators, we prove product and sum inequalities for their variances with bounds larger than those following from combining the pairwise ones. We extend these results to N observables for a quantum particle and prove uncertainty relations for the sums and products of their variances \nin terms of the commutators. \nFurthermore, we present a general theory of preparational uncertainty relations for a quantum particle in one dimension and derive conditions for a smooth function of the second moments to assume a lower bound. The Robertson-Schroedinger inequality \nis found to be of special significance and we geometrically study the space of second moments. We prove new uncertainty relations for various functions of the variances and covariance of position and momentum of a quantum particle. Some of our findings are shown to extend to more than one spatial degree of freedom and we derive \nvarious types of inequalities. \nFinally, we propose a generalisation of the Arthurs-Kelly model of joint measurement of position and momentum to incorporate the case of more than two observables and derive joint-measurement inequalities for the statistics of the probes. For the case of \nthree canonical observables and suitable definitions of error and disturbance we obtain a number of error-error-error and error-error-disturbance inequalities and show that the lower bound is identical to the preparational one.

Entropic uncertainty minimum for angle and angular momentum

Alison M. Yao, Thomas Brougham, Electra Eleftheriadou +2 more

Uncertainty relations are key components in the understanding of the nature of quantum mechanics. In particular, entropic relations are preferred in the study of angular position and angular momentum states. We propose a new form of angle–angular momentum state that provides, for all practical purposes, a lower bound on the entropic uncertainty relation, , for any given angular uncertainty, thus improving upon previous bounds. We establish this by comparing this sum with the absolute minimum value determined by a global numerical search. These states are convenient to work with both analytically and experimentally, which suggests that they may be of use for quantum information purposes.

Tight State-Independent Uncertainty Relations for Qubits

Alastair A. Abbott, Pierre-Louis Alzieu, Michael J. W. Hall +1 more

The well-known Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty relations have state-dependent lower bounds, which are trivial for certain states. We present a general approach to deriving tight state-independent uncertainty relations for qubit measurements that completely characterise the obtainable uncertainty values. This approach can give such relations for any number of observables, and we do so explicitly for arbitrary pairs and triples of qubit measurements. We show how these relations can be transformed into equivalent tight entropic uncertainty relations. More generally, they can be expressed in terms of any measure of uncertainty that can be written as a function of the expectation value of the observable for a given state.

SU(2) uncertainty limits

Saroosh Shabbir, Gunnar G. Bjork

Although progress has been made recently in defining nontrivial uncertainty limits for the SU(2) group, a description of the intermediate states bound by these limits remains lacking. In this paper we enumerate possible uncertainty relations for the SU(2) group that involve all three observables and that are, moreover, invariant under SU(2) transformations. We demonstrate that these relations however, even taken as a group, do not provide sharp, saturable bounds. To find sharp bounds, we systematically calculate the variance of the SU(2) operators for all pure states belonging to the $N=2$ and $N=3$ polarization excitation manifold (corresponding to spin 1 and spin 3/2). Lastly, and perhaps counter to expectation, we note that even pure states can reach the maximum uncertainty limit.
