Abstract

We study the time-dependent Bogoliubov–de-Gennes equations for generic translation-invariant fermionic many-body systems. For initial states that are close to thermal equilibrium states at temperatures near the critical temperature, we show that the magnitude of the order parameter stays approximately constant in time and, in particular, does not follow a time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau equation, which is often employed as a phenomenological description and predicts a decay of the order parameter in time. The full non-linear structure of the equations is necessary to understand this behavior.

Time-dependent Bogolubov--de-Gennes equations and non-validity of Ginzburg--Landau theory

We study the time-dependent Bogolubov--de-Gennes equations for generic translation-invariant fermionic many-body systems, and show that even slightly above the critical temperature the order parameter does not decay in time, in contrast to what was predicted previously in the literature on the basis of Ginzburg--Landau theory. The full non-linear structure of the equations is necessary to understand this behavior.

Equation for the superfluid gap obtained by coarse graining the Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations throughout the BCS-BEC crossover

Stefano Simonucci, Giancarlo Calvanese Strinati

We derive a nonlinear differential equation for the gap parameter of a superfluid Fermi system by performing a suitable coarse graining of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) equations throughout the BCS-BEC crossover, with the aim of replacing the time-consuming solution of the original BdG equations by the simpler solution of this novel equation. We perform a favorable numerical test on the validity of this new equation over most of the temperature-coupling phase diagram, by an explicit comparison with the full solution of the original BdG equations for an isolated vortex. We also show that the new equation reduces both to the Ginzburg-Landau equation for Cooper pairs in weak coupling close to the critical temperature and to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for composite bosons in strong coupling at low temperature.

Comparing the full time-dependent BCS equation to its linear approximation: A numerical investigation

Christian Hainzl, Jonathan Seyrich

In this paper we report on the results of a numerical study of the nonlinear time-dependent Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) equation, often also denoted as Bogoliubov--de--Gennes (BdG) equation, for a one-dimensional system of fermions with contact interaction. We show that the full equation and its linear approximation give rise to completely different evolutions. This strongly contradicts the existence of a diffusive nonlinear time-dependent Ginzburg--Landau equation, in accordance with a recent theoretical result by Frank, Hainzl, Schlein, and Seiringer. We include a full description on the numerical implementation of the partial differential equations.

Time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory for a weak-coupling superconductor

Henk T. C. Stoof

Using a functional approach to the Keldysh formalism we develop a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation for the long-wavelength and low-frequency dynamics of a weak-coupling superconductor, which is also valid in situations that deviate significantly from thermal equilibrium. The theory takes the interactions between quasiparticles and Cooper pairs into account exactly and is explicitly Galilean-invariant at zero temperature. However, the temporal and spatial dependence of the order parameter is assumed to be such that the effects of Landau damping can be neglected. We also consider the screening properties of the superconductor and show that the inclusion of the polarizability of the electron gas is necessary for a complete description.

Derivation of the Time-Dependent Ginzburg–Landau Equation for Cooper Pairs in the BCS Limit of the BCS–BEC Crossover

Giancarlo Calvanese Strinati

This chapter derives the time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau equation from first principles, by relying on the same formal approach that has led to the time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation of Chapter 28. Specifically, the time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau equation holds close to the critical temperature of the initial equilibrium preparation and in the (extreme) BCS limit of the BCS–BEC crossover, when the Cooper pairs are largely overlapping with each other. Care has to be exerted when dealing with the analytic properties in the wave-vector and frequency space of the normal and anomalous particle–particle bubbles.

Derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation for Condensed Bosons from the Bogoliubov–de Gennes Equations for Superfluid Fermions

P. Pieri, Giancarlo Calvanese Strinati

We derive the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equation at zero temperature for condensed bosons, which form as bound-fermion pairs when the mutual fermionic attractive interaction is sufficiently strong, from the strong-coupling limit of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations that describe superfluid fermions in the presence of an external potential. Three-body corrections to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation are also obtained by our approach. Our results are relevant to the recent advances with ultracold fermionic atoms in a trap.
