Abstract

Stochastic matrices and positive maps in matrix algebras have proved to be very important tools for analysing classical and quantum systems. In particular they represent a natural set of transformations for classical and quantum states, respectively. Here we introduce the notion of pseudo-stochastic matrices and consider their semigroup property. Unlike stochastic matrices, pseudo-stochastic matrices are permitted to have matrix elements which are negative while respecting the requirement that the sum of the elements of each column is one. They also allow for convex combinations, and carry a Lie group structure which permits the introduction of Lie algebra generators. The quantum analog of a pseudo-stochastic matrix exists and is called a pseudo-positive map. They have the property of transforming a subset of quantum states (characterized by maximal purity or minimal von Neumann entropy requirements) into quantum states. Examples of qubit dynamics connected with ‘diamond’ sets of stochastic matrices and pseudo-positive maps are dealt with.

Maps on Quantum States in -algebras Preserving von Neumann Entropy or Schatten -norm of Convex Combinations

Marcell Gaál

Abstract Very recently, Karder and Petek completely described maps on density matrices (positive semidefinite matrices with unit trace) preserving certain entropy-like convex functionals of any convex combination. As a result, maps could be characterized that preserve von Neumann entropy or Schatten $p$ -norm of any convex combination of quantum states (whose mathematical representatives are the density matrices). In this note we consider these latter two problems on the set of invertible density operators, in a much more general setting, on the set of positive invertible elements with unit trace in a $C^{\ast }$ -algebra.

Spectral properties of circulant positive maps: classical versus quantum

Dariusz Chruściński

A class of circulant stochastic matrices and positive maps in matrix algebras displaying circulant structure is analyzed. It is shown how the spectral properties of matrices and linear maps are related to positivity conditions. An interesting interplay between the classical and quantum case is revealed.

Quantum entropies, Schur concavity and dynamical semigroups

Paolo Aniello

Entropy plays a fundamental role in several branches of physics. In the quantum setting, one usually considers the von Neumann entropy, but other useful quantities have been proposed in the literature; e.g., the Rényi and the Tsallis entropies. The evolution of an open quantum system, described by a semigroup of dynamical maps (in short, a dynamical semigroup), may decrease a quantum entropy, for some initial condition. We will discuss various characterizations of those dynamical semigroups that, for every initial condition, do not decrease a general class of quantum entropies, which is defined using the notion of Schur concavity of a function. We will not assume that such a dynamical semigroup be completely positive, the physical justification of this condition being controversial. Therefore, we will consider semigroups of trace-preserving, positive — but not necessarily completely positive — linear maps. We will next focus on a special class of (completely positive) dynamical semigroups, the twirling semigroups , having applications in quantum information science. We will argue that the whole class of dynamical semigroups that do not decrease a quantum entropy can be obtained as a suitable generalization of the twirling semigroups.

Classical-quantum semigroups

Paolo Aniello

An intriguing and deep analogy between classical and quantum states is revealed using the notion of positive definite function. By Bochner's theorem, (classical) positive definite functions on phase space can be obtained by taking the Fourier transform of probability measures; similarly, quantum positive definite functions are the image via the Fourier-Plancherel operator of Wigner quasi-probability distributions. Considering the basic properties of positive definite functions — classical and quantum — one is led to define a class of semigroups of operators, the so-called classical-quantum semigroups. It is then natural to wonder whether they have any physical meaning. It turns out that the classical-quantum semigroups can also be obtained by dequantizing a certain class of quantum dynamical semigroups, namely, the classical noise semigroups. This correspondence fits in a more general group-theoretical framework in which a larger class of quantum dynamical semigroups, the twirling semigroups, can be suitably dequantized. Connections with quantum information science will be briefly discussed.

Analogs of quantum matrix groups from finite measurement resolution?

Matti Pitkänen

The notion of quantum group replaces ordinary matrices with matrices with non-commutative elements. In TGD framework I have proposed that the notion should relate to the inclusions of von Neumann algebras allowing one to describe mathematically the notion of finite measurement resolution. In this article I will consider the notion of quantum matrix inspired by the recent view about quantum TGD relying on the notion of finite measurement resolution. Complex matrix elements are replaced with operators expressible as products of non-negative Hermitian operators and unitary operators analogous to the products of modulus and phase as a representation for complex numbers. The condition that determinant and sub-determinants exist is crucial for the well-defined eigenvalue problem in the generalized sense.  Strong/weak permutation symmetry of determinant requires its invariance under permutations of rows and/or columns. Weak permutation symmetry means development of determinant with respect to a fixed row or column and does not pose additional conditions. For weak permutation symmetry the permutation of rows/columns would however has a natural interpretation as braiding for the Hermitian operators defined by the moduli of operator valued matrix elements and here quantum group structure emerges. The commutativity of all sub-determinants is essential for the replacement of eigenvalues with eigenvalue spectra of Hermitian operators and sub-determinants define mutually commuting set of operators. Quantum matrices define a more general structure than quantum group but provide a concrete representation and interpretation for quantum group  in terms of finite measurement resolution, in particular when q is a root of unity. One can also understand the fractal structure of inclusion sequences of hyper-finite factors resulting by replacing operators appearing as matrix elements with quantum matrices.

On The Generators of Quantum Dynamical Semigroups

Alexander Wiedemann

In recent years, digraph induced generators of quantum dynamical semigroups have been introduced and studied, particularly in the context of unique relaxation and invariance. We define the class of pair block diagonal generators, which allows for additional interaction coefficients but preserves the main structural properties. Namely, when the basis of the underlying Hilbert space is given by the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian (for example the generic semigroups), then the action of the semigroup leaves invariant the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix spaces. In this case, we explicitly compute all invariant states of the semigroup. In order to define this class we provide a characterization of when the Gorini- Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) equation defines a proper generator when arbitrary Lindblad operators are allowed (in particular, they do not need to be trace- less as demanded by the GKSL Theorem). Moreover, we consider the converse con- struction to show that every generator naturally gives rise to a digraph, and that under certain assumptions the properties of this digraph can be exploited to gain knowledge of both the number and the structure of the invariant states of the corre- sponding semigroup. We also consider more general constructions on the von Neumann algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space, perhaps infinite dimensional. In partic- ular, we prove that for every semigroup of Schwarz maps on such an algebra which has a subinvariant faithful normal state there exists an associated semigroup of con- tractions on the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators of the Hilbert space. Moreover, we show that if the original semigroup is weak∗ continuous then the associated semigroup is strongly continuous. We introduce the notion of the extended generator of a semigroup on the bounded operators of a Hilbert space with respect to an or- thonormal basis of the Hilbert space. We describe this form of the generator of a quantum Markov semigroup on the von Neumann algebra of all bounded linear op- erators on a Hilbert space which has an invariant faithful normal state under the assumption that the generator of the associated semigroup has compact resolvent, or under the assumption that the minimal unitary dilation of the associated semigroup of contractions is compact.
