Abstract

We study $3d$ (or $(3+1)d$) Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) realized on the boundary of $4d$ (or $(4+1)d$) bosonic symmetry protected topological (BSPT) states, using a systematic nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) field theory description of BSPT states. We demonstrate that many of these QED states have an exact electric-magnetic duality due to the symmetry of the BSPT states in the $4d$ bulk. The gauge charge and Dirac monopole both carry projective representations of the bulk symmetry, and the emergent gapless photons of the QED phase also transform nontrivially under the bulk symmetry. Some of these QED boundary states can be further driven into a $3d$ $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order, and the statistics and symmetry transformation of its point particle and vison loop excitations guarantee that this topological order cannot be driven into a trivial confined or Higgs phase. With a finite fourth dimension, the entire system becomes a $3d$ lattice, the self-dual QED and the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order can coexist on two opposite boundaries respectively, which together constitute an exotic $3d$ self-dual "topological photon phase".

Physics of symmetry protected topological phases involving higher symmetries and its applications

Chao‐Ming Jian, Xiao-Chuan Wu, Yichen Xu +1 more

We discuss physical constructions and the boundary properties of various symmetry-protected topological phases that involve 1-form symmetries from one spatial dimension to four spatial dimensions ($4d$). For example, the prototype three-dimensional ($3d$) boundary state of $4d$ SPT states involving 1-form symmetries can be either a gapless photon phase (quantum electrodynamics) or gapped topological order enriched by 1-form symmetries; that is, the loop excitations of these topological orders carry nontrivial 1-form symmetry charges. This study also serves the purpose of diagnosing anomalies of $3d$ states of matter. Connection between SPT states with 1-form symmetries and condensed-matter systems such as quantum dimer models at one lower dimension will also be discussed. Whether a quantum dimer model can have a trivial gapped phase depends on the nature of its corresponding bulk state in one higher dimension.

Quantum phase transitions between bosonic symmetry-protected topological states without sign problem: Nonlinear sigma model with a topological term

Yi‐Zhuang You, Zhen Bi, Dan Mao +1 more

We propose a series of simple two-dimensional (2D) lattice interacting fermion models that we demonstrate at low energy describe bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states and quantum phase transitions between them. This is because due to interaction, the fermions are gapped both at the boundary of the SPT states and at the bulk quantum phase transition, thus these models at low energy can be described completely by bosonic degrees of freedom. We show that the bulk of these models is described by a $\mathrm{Sp}(N$) principal chiral model with a topological $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Theta}}$ term, whose boundary is described by a $\mathrm{Sp}(N$) principal chiral model with a Wess-Zumino-Witten term at level 1. The quantum phase transition between SPT states in the bulk is tuned by a particular interaction term, which corresponds to tuning $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Theta}}$ in the field theory, and the phase transition occurs at $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Theta}}=\ensuremath{\pi}$. The simplest version of these models with $N=1$ is equivalent to the familiar O(4) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with a topological term, whose boundary is a $(1+1)\text{D}$ conformal field theory with central charge $c=1$. After breaking the O(4) symmetry to its subgroups, this model can be viewed as bosonic SPT states with U(1), or ${Z}_{2}$ symmetries, etc. All of these fermion models, including the bulk quantum phase transitions, can be simulated with the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method without the sign problem. Recent numerical results strongly suggest that the quantum disordered phase of the O(4) NLSM with precisely $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Theta}}=\ensuremath{\pi}$ is a stable $(2+1)\text{D}$ conformal field theory with gapless bosonic modes.

Self-dual $S_3$ gauge theory in 2+1d: lattice model and topological phase transitions

Da-Chuan Lu, Chong Wang, Ashvin Vishwanath

Electric-magnetic self-duality of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory, realized microscopically as a half-lattice-translation exchanging electric charge and magnetic flux, has been an influential example of a duality symmetry with an exact lattice realization. We construct the first non-Abelian generalization of this construction: a lattice model of the $S_3$ quantum double $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$ on a tensor product Hilbert space in which the $\mathbb{Z}^{\mathrm{em}}_2$ anyon-permutation symmetry, exchanging the non-Abelian chargeon $C$ and fluxon $F$, is realized via lattice translation. Consequently we find that the zigzag boundary termination of the model realizes, without fine-tuning, a gapless critical edge state described by the tetracritical Ising CFT. The bulk admits three independent $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\mathrm{em}}$-preserving bosonic perturbations, driving $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$ into distinct gapped phases. We analyze these transitions by three independent methods: category-theoretic anyon condensation, microscopic lattice Hamiltonians, and Chern-Simons-Higgs theory, which all agree, yielding a unified picture. These examples motivate a minimal-condensation principle: proliferating a bosonic anyon generically drives condensation of a minimal condensable algebra containing it, with symmetry-related condensates appearing as degenerate vacua that spontaneously break the anyon-permutation symmetry. Our model construction extends to an infinite family of self-dual dihedral quantum doubles $\mathcal{D}(D_{2n})$. Notably, each model is sign-problem-free, opening the door to large-scale numerical exploration of the phases of non-Abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs theories.

Classification and description of bosonic symmetry protected topological phases with semiclassical nonlinear sigma models

Zhen Bi, Alex Rasmussen, Kevin Slagle +1 more

In this paper we systematically classify and describe bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in all physical spatial dimensions using semiclassical nonlinear Sigma model (NLSM) field theories. All the SPT phases on a $d-$dimensional lattice discussed in this paper can be described by the same NLSM, which is an O(d+2) NLSM in $(d+1)-$dimensional space-time, with a topological $Θ-$term. The field in the NLSM is a semiclassical Landau order parameter with a unit length constraint. The classification of SPT phases discussed in this paper based on their NLSMs is consistent with the more mathematical classification based on group cohomology. Besides the classification, the formalism used in this paper also allows us to explicitly discuss the physics at the boundary of the SPT phases, and it reveals the relation between SPT phases with different symmetries. For example, it gives many of these SPT states a natural "decorated defect" construction.

Topological electromagnetic responses of bosonic quantum Hall, topological insulator, and chiral semimetal phases in all dimensions

Matthew F. Lapa, Chao‐Ming Jian, Peng Ye +1 more

We calculate the topological part of the electromagnetic response of bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) phases in odd (space-time) dimensions, and bosonic topological insulator (BTI) and bosonic chiral semimetal (BCSM) phases in even dimensions. To do this, we use the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) description of bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases, and the method of gauged Wess-Zumino (WZ) actions. We find the surprising result that for BIQH states in dimension $2m\ensuremath{-}1$ $(m=1,2,\ensuremath{\cdots})$, the bulk response to an electromagnetic field ${A}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ is characterized by a Chern-Simons term for ${A}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ with a level quantized in integer multiples of $m!$ (factorial). We also show that BTI states (which have an extra ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry) can exhibit a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$-breaking quantum Hall effect on their boundaries, with this boundary quantum Hall effect described by a Chern-Simons term at level $\frac{m!}{2}$. We show that the factor of $m!$ can be understood by requiring gauge invariance of the exponential of the Chern-Simons term on a general Euclidean manifold, and we also use this argument to characterize the electromagnetic and gravitational responses of fermionic SPT phases with $\text{U}(1)$ symmetry in all odd dimensions. We then use our gauged boundary actions for the BIQH and BTI states to (i) construct a bosonic analog of a chiral semimetal (BCSM) in even dimensions, (ii) show that the boundary of the BTI state exhibits a bosonic analog of the parity anomaly of Dirac fermions in odd dimensions, and (iii) study anomaly inflow at domain walls on the boundary of BTI states. In a series of Appendixes we derive important formulas and additional results. In particular, in Appendix A we use the connection between equivariant cohomology and gauged WZ actions to give a mathematical interpretation of the actions for the BIQH and BTI boundaries constructed in this paper.

Quantized topological terms in weakly coupled gauge theories and their connection to symmetry protected topological phases

Ling-Yan Hung, Xiao-Gang Wen

We consider a weakly coupled gauge theory where charged particles all have large gaps (ie no Higgs condensation to break the gauge "symmetry") and the field strength fluctuates only weakly. We ask what kind of topological terms can be added to the Lagrangian of such a weakly coupled gauge theory. In this paper, we systematically construct quantized topological terms which are generalization of the Chern-Simons terms and $F\wedge F$ terms, in space-time dimensions $d$ and for any gauge groups (continuous or discrete), using each element of the topological cohomology classes $H^{d+1}(BG,\Z)$ on the classifying space $BG$ of the gauge group $G$. In 3$d$ or for finite gauge groups above 3$d$, the weakly coupled gauge theories are gapped. So our results on topological terms can be viewed as a systematic construction of gapped topologically ordered phases of weakly coupled gauge theories. In other cases, the weakly coupled gauge theories are gapless. So our results can be viewed as an attempt to systematically construct different gapless phases of weakly coupled gauge theories. Amazingly, the bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases with a finite on-site symmetry group $G$ are also classified by the same $H^{d+1}(BG,\Z)$. (SPT phases are gapped quantum phases with a symmetry and trivial topological order.) In this paper, we show an explicit duality relation between topological gauge theories with the quantized topological terms and the bosonic SPT phases, for any finite group $G$ and in any dimensions; a result first obtained by Levin and Gu. We also study the relation between topological lattice gauge theory and the string-net states with non-trivial topological order and no symmetry.
