Abstract

Phonon processes in doped crystals might be suppressed by nanotailoring phononic structures. The proposed scheme increases the lifetime of spin states, having important implications for quantum memories in rare-earth-ion crystals.

Long-lived photon echo in doped nanocrystals

А. А. Калачев, Daria D. Vlasova

The possibility of increase of the information storage time in optical memory devices based on the long-lived photon echo in rare-earth ion doped crystals provided that the latter are nanometer ones is analyzed. Taking into account that in such materials the information storage time is determined by the population lifetimes of hyperfine sublevels of a ground electron state it is possible to increase it due to the modification of phonon density of states in nanocrystals as compared to bulk crystals.

Modification of relaxation dynamics in Tb3+:Y3Al5O12 nanopowders

Thomas Lutz, Lucile Veissier, Philip J. T. Woodburn +4 more

Nanostructured rare-earth-ion-doped materials are increasingly being investigated for on-chip implementations of quantum information processing protocols as well as commercial applications such as fluorescent lighting. However, achieving high-quality and optimized materials at the nanoscale is still challenging. Here we present a detailed study into the restriction of phonon processes in the transition from bulk crystals to small ($\ensuremath{\le}40$-nm) nanocrystals by observing the relaxation dynamics between crystal-field levels of ${\mathrm{Tb}}^{3+}:{\mathrm{Y}}_{3}{\mathrm{Al}}_{5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$. We find that the population relaxation dynamics are modified as the particle size is reduced, consistent with our simulations of inhibited relaxation through a modified vibrational density of states and hence modified phonon emission. However, our experiments also indicate that nonradiative processes not driven by phonons are also present in the smaller particles, causing transitions and rapid thermalization between the levels on a time scale of $<100\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ns}$.

Quantum Nano-Photonic Devices Based on Rare-Earth Doped Crystals

Andrei Faraon

Rare-earth ions in crystalline hosts are coupled to nano-resonators, thus enabling large Purcell factors and high optical depths in micron-long structures. These devices will enable dense on-chip optical quantum memories and new quantum bits.
