Abstract

We identify and discuss the ground state of a quantum magnet on a triangular lattice with bond-dependent Ising-type spin couplings, that is, a triangular analog of the Kitaev honeycomb model. The classical ground-state manifold of the model is spanned by decoupled Ising-type chains, and its accidental degeneracy is due to the frustrated nature of the anisotropic spin couplings. We show how this subextensive degeneracy is lifted by a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism and study the quantum selection of the ground state by treating short-wavelength fluctuations within the linked cluster expansion and by using the complementary spin-wave theory. We find that quantum fluctuations couple next-nearest-neighbor chains through an emergent four-spin interaction, while nearest-neighbor chains remain decoupled. The remaining discrete degeneracy of the ground state is shown to be protected by a hidden symmetry of the model.

Phase diagrams of two-dimensional frustrated spin systems

Ansgar Kalz

In this work the ordering processes in classical frustrated Ising models and the ground-state behavior of frustrated quantum spin models are investigated. In the first part the phase transition from a high-temperature paramagnetic phase to a antiferromagnetic ground state is analyzed for the square-lattice Ising model with competing antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor spins. In the case of spatially isotropic interactions the phase transition to a collinear state is of special interest. Using Monte-Carlo simulations on finite lattices as well as field-theoretical methods for the continuous model it is shown that depending on the frustration three different sectors can be distinguished that show (i) Ising-universal behavior (ii) Ashkin-Teller-like non-universal behavior (varying critical exponents) and (iii) non-critical first-order behavior. For spatially anisotropic interactions the emergence of an intermediate incommensurate phase is verified by means of Monte-Carlo simulations which has been predicted by earlier mean-field calculations. The nature of this phase is studied analyzing spin-spin correlation functions and its ordering wave-vector reveals a strong temperature and size dependence. In the second part the influence of quantum fluctuations on classical antiferromagnetic ground states are investigated in anisotropic quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg models with competing interactions. Using quantum Monte-Carlo simulations, exact diagonalization and perturbation theory the ground-state phase diagrams are calculated for a square lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions and a honeycomb lattice with up to third-nearest-neighbor interactions whereby the fluctuations are chosen to be non-frustrating. For both cases the stability regions of classical magnetic states are identified and an intermediate phase is detected that shows no sign of long-range magnetic order. Further calculations also rule out valence-bond-crystal or topological order for this state, thus a quantum disordered ground state is stabilized in these models.

Theory of partial quantum disorder in the stuffed honeycomb Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Urban F. P. Seifert, Matthias Vojta C

Recent numerical results [Gonzalez et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 017201 (2019); Shimada et al., J. Phys. Conf. Ser. 969, 012126 (2018)] point to the existence of a partial-disorder ground state for a spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the stuffed honeycomb lattice, with 2/3 of the local moments ordering in an antiferromagnetic N\'eel pattern, while the remaining 1/3 of the sites display short-range correlations only, akin to a quantum spin liquid. We derive an effective model for this disordered subsystem, by integrating out fluctuations of the ordered local moments, which yield couplings in a formal $1/S$ expansion, with $S$ being the spin amplitude. The result is an effective triangular-lattice XXZ model, with planar ferromagnetic order for large $S$ and a stripe-ordered Ising ground state for small $S$, the latter being the result of frustrated Ising interactions. Within the semiclassical analysis, the transition point between the two orders is located at ${S}_{c}=0.646$, being very close to the relevant case $S=1/2$. Near $S={S}_{c}$ quantum fluctuations tend to destabilize magnetic order. We conjecture that this applies to $S=1/2$, thus explaining the observed partial-disorder state.

Quantum phase transitions in the Heisenberg J1−J2 triangular antiferromagnet in a magnetic field

Mengxing Ye, Andrey V. Chubukov

We present the zero-temperature phase diagram of a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a frustrated triangular lattice with nearest-neighbor $({J}_{1})$ and next-nearest-neighbor $({J}_{2})$ interactions, in a magnetic field. We show that the classical model has an accidental degeneracy for all ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}$ and all fields, but the degeneracy is lifted by quantum fluctuations. We show that at large spin $S$, for ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}<1/8$, quantum fluctuations select the same sequence of three sublattice co-planar states in a field as for ${J}_{2}=0$, and for $1/8<{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}<1$, they select the canted stripe state for all nonzero fields. The transition between the two states is first order in all fields, with the hysteresis width set by quantum fluctuations. We study the model with arbitrary $S$, including $S=1/2$, near the saturation field by exploring the fact that near saturation the density of bosons is small for all $S$. We show that for $S>1$, the transition remains first order, with a finite hysteresis width, but for $S=1/2$ and, possibly, $S=1$, there appears a new intermediate phase without a quasiclassical long-range order.

Exchange-frustrated quadrupoles on the honeycomb lattice: Flavor-wave spectra, classical degeneracies and parton constructions

Partha Sarker, Han Ma, Urban F. P. Seifert

We study the quadrupolar Kitaev model, an $S=1$ honeycomb-lattice model with frustrated bond-dependent quadrupolar interactions. Using complementary methods and expanding around controlled limits, we uncover several intertwined structures. First, a semiclassical variational analysis based on $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ flavor theory reveals an extensively degenerate manifold of classical mean-field ground states, suggesting that quantum fluctuations may stabilize a quantum-disordered phase. Second, in the bond-anisotropic limit, perturbation theory is used to derive effective low-energy Hamiltonians, which crucially depend on the presence (or absence) of a residual symmetry $\mathcal{M}$ of combined lattice reflection and discrete spin rotation. A Majorana parton construction uncovers an exact $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge structure and motivates possible confined and deconfined phases driven by gauge-charge condensation, consistent with the effective theories obtained in anisotropic limit. Further, within the same parton formalism, different Majorana mean-field ansätze produce both gapless and gapped candidate quantum-disordered states, distinguished by linear versus projective implementations of $\mathcal M$. Our results highlight frustrated quadrupolar interactions as a route to quantum-disordered phases, relevant to $S \geq 1$ Kitaev materials and Rydberg-array quantum simulators.

Dimensional reduction in quantum spin- 12 system on a 17 -depleted triangular lattice

Ryo Makuta, Chisa Hotta

We study the magnetism of a quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnet on a maple-leaf lattice which is obtained by regularly depleting $\frac{1}{7}$ of the sites of a triangular lattice. Although the interactions are set to be spatially isotropic, the ground state shows a stripe N\'eel order and the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility follows that of the one-dimensional XXZ model with a finite spin gap. We examine the nature of frustration by mapping the low-energy degenerate manifold of states to the fully packed loop-string model on a dual cluster-depleted honeycomb lattice, finding that the order-by-disorder due to quantum fluctuation characteristic of highly frustrated magnets is responsible for the emergent stripes. The excited magnons split into two spinons and propagate in the one-dimensional direction along the stripe, which is reminiscent of the XXZ or Ising model in one dimension. Unlike most of the previously studied dimensional-reduction effects, our case is purely spontaneous as the interactions of the Hamiltonian retain a two-dimensional structure.

Quantum spin liquid ground states of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the triangular lattice

Pavel Kos, Matthias Punk

We study quantum disordered ground states of the two-dimensional Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the triangular lattice using a Schwinger boson approach. Our aim is to identify and characterize potential gapped quantum spin liquid phases that are stabilized by anisotropic Kitaev interactions. For antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and Kitaev couplings and sufficiently small spin $S$, we find three different symmetric ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquid phases, separated by two continuous quantum phase transitions. Interestingly, the gap of elementary excitations remains finite throughout the transitions. The first spin liquid phase corresponds to the well-known zero-flux state in the Heisenberg limit, which is stable with respect to small Kitaev couplings and develops ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ order in the semiclassical limit at large $S$. In the opposite Kitaev limit, we find a different spin liquid ground state, which is a quantum disordered version of a magnetically ordered state with antiferromagnetic chains, in accordance with results in the classical limit. Finally, at intermediate couplings, we find a spin liquid state with unusual spin correlations. Upon spinon condensation, this state develops Bragg peaks at incommensurate momenta in close analogy to the magnetically ordered Z2 vortex crystal phase, which has been analyzed in recent theoretical works.
