Abstract

We calculate the s-wave scattering length and effective range and the p-wave scattering volume for 7 Li atoms interacting with 133 Cs atoms via the X 1 Σ + molecular potential. The length and volume are found by fitting the log-derivative of the zero energy wave function evaluated at short range to a long range expression that accounts for the leading van der Waals dispersion potential and then incorporating the remaining long range dispersion contributions to first order. The effective range is evaluated from a quadrature formula. The calculated parameters are checked from the zero energy limits of the scattering phase shifts. We comment on ill-conditioning in the calculated s-wave scattering length.

Cold collisions of alkali-metal atoms and chromium atoms

G. H. Jeung, Denis Hagebaum‐Reignier, Michael J. Jamieson

We present ab initio potentials for ground state lithium, sodium, potassium and rubidium atoms interacting with ground state chromium atoms via the 6 Σ + and 8 Σ + states of the corresponding dimers. Each potential is matched to the leading van der Waals dispersion energy − C 6 / R 6 − C 8 / R 8 and an exchange energy; we list the values of C 6 , C 8 and the exchange fitting parameters. We present calculated values from quantal and semi-classical approximations for the s-wave scattering length and effective range and the p-wave scattering volume for collisions of each of the alkali-metal atoms lithium, sodium, potassium and rubidium with 52 chromium atoms and comment on s-wave scattering by 53 chromium atoms.

Elastic scattering of cold caesium and rubidium atoms

M. J. Jamieson, Hamid Sarbazi‐Azad, Henni Ouerdane +3 more

For elastic scattering of 133 Cs atoms by 85 Rb and 87 Rb atoms, interacting via the X 1 Σ + and a 3 Σ + molecular states of RbCs, calculations are presented of the scattering length and the effective range and also of two volume parameters, one for low energy p-wave scattering and one for the energy of an ensemble of fermions. The calculations are performed by various methods, with several representations of the interatomic potentials, including new ab initio potentials presented here. It is shown how the calculated data may be corrected to include the influence of the long range interactions, thus removing the need for numerical solutions of the radial Schrödinger equation at very large interatomic separations. The sensitivity of the results to the choice of potentials, to the van der Waals dispersion coefficient C 6 and to the reduced mass of the colliding atoms is explored, and is found to be great.

S-wave scattering lengths and effective ranges for collisions of ground state Be atoms

Michael J. Jamieson, A. S.‐C. Cheung, Henni Ouerdane +2 more

The scattering lengths and effective ranges for collisions of ground state Be atoms interacting via the X 1Σ + g molecular state of the Be 2 dimer are calculated for two published X 1Σ + g potentials. A new ab initio X 1Σ + g potential is presented with its vibrational energies and rotational constants. The scattering parameters calculated with it and with the existing potentials are compared. Simple formulae showing how the scattering parameters are influenced by adiabatic coupling to electronic motion are derived within the semi-classical formulation and evaluated for the potentials considered. The formulae imply that a semi-classical account of adiabatic coupling can be made by increasing each atomic mass by one electron mass. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Scattering lengths for Li–Cs, Na–Cs, K–Cs, and Rb–Cs ultracold collisions

A.L.M. Zanelatto, Evandro Marcos Saidel Ribeiro, Reginaldo de Jesus Napolitano

We present triplet and singlet scattering lengths for X--133Cs collisions (X=6,7Li, 23Na, 39,40,41K, and 85,87Rb). We consider the short-range potential-energy curves based on high-quality ab initio calculations and the long-range potential described by accurate dispersion coefficients available in the literature. Using a Fermi function to smoothly connect the short- and long-range terms we construct the potential for all R and evaluate the scattering length for each mixed species X--Cs. In particular, we predict that the cross section for inelastic processes between 23Na and 133Cs and between 40K and 133Cs will be small as compared with the respective elastic cross sections.

How a change in the interaction potential affects the p-wave scattering volume

M. J. Jamieson, A. Dalgarno

We derive a simple expression for the change in the s-wave scattering length in terms of zero-energy wavefunctions, we generalize it to obtain an expression for the change in the p-wave scattering volume and we use both expressions to derive the first order differential equations of variable phase theory that are satisfied by the closely related accumulated scattering length and volume. We provide numerical demonstrations for the example of a pair of hydrogen atoms interacting via the X1Σ+g molecular state.

Analytical calculations of scattering lengths in atomic physics

Radosław Szmytkowski

We describe a method for evaluating analytical long-range contributions to scattering lengths for some potentials used in atomic physics. We assume that an interaction potential between colliding particles consists of two parts. The form of a short-range component, vanishing beyond some distance from the origin (a core radius), need not be given. Instead, we assume that a set of short-range scattering lengths due to that part of the interaction is known. A long-range tail of the potential is chosen to be an inverse power potential, a superposition of two inverse power potentials with suitably chosen exponents or the Lent potential. For these three classes of long-range interactions a radial Schrodinger equation at zero energy may be solved analytically with solutions expressed in terms of the Bessel, Whittaker and Legendre functions, respectively. We utilize this fact and derive exact analytical formulae for the scattering lengths. The expressions depend on the short-range scattering lengths, the core radius and parameters characterizing the long-range part of the interaction. Cases when the long-range potential (or its part) may be treated as a perturbation are also discussed and formulae for scattering lengths linear in strengths of the perturbing potentials are given. It is shown that for some combination of the orbital angular momentum quantum number and an exponent of the leading term of the potential the derived formulae, exact or approximate, take very simple forms and contain only polynomial and trigonometric functions. The expressions obtained in this paper are applicable to scattering of charged particles by neutral targets and to collisions between neutrals. The results are illustrated by accelerating convergence of scattering lengths computed for e - -Xe and Cs-Cs systems.
