Abstract

We consider analytically the dynamics of an arbitrary number and configuration of vortices in an annular Bose-Einstein condensate obtaining expressions for the free energy and vortex precession rates to logarithmic accuracy. We also obtain lower bounds for the lifetime of a single vortex in the annulus. Our results enable a closed-form analytic treatment of vortex-vortex interactions in the annulus that is exact in the incompressible limit. The incompressible hydrodynamics that is developed here paves the way for more general analytical treatments of vortex dynamics in non-simply-connected geometries.

Vortex dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensates: Numerical calculations

Dora M. Jezek, Horacio M. Cataldo

We numerically study properties of the dynamics of vortices in nonrotating Bose-Einstein condensates in the Thomas-Fermi regime. On the one hand, we compute the vortex energy as a function of its position and we predict, using the expression of the Magnus force, the vortex precession velocity. On the other hand, we calculate the temporal evolution of the vortex-state and test the accuracy of the previous prediction. We also investigate the validity of analytical formulae of this velocity involving the healing length. In addition, we analyze the velocity field and the angular momentum and we compare them to available analytical expressions.

Vortex dynamics in an annular Bose-Einstein condensate

Sungjong Woo, Young‐Woo Son

We theoretically show that the topology of a nonsimply connected annular atomic Bose-Einstein condensate enforces the inner surface waves to be always excited with outer surface excitations and that the inner surface modes are associated with induced vortex dipoles unlike the surface waves of a simply connected one with vortex monopoles. Consequently, under stirring to drive an inner surface wave, a peculiar population oscillation between the inner and outer surface is generated regardless of annulus thickness. Moreover, a vortex nucleation process by stirring is observed that can merge the inner vortex dipoles and outer vortex into a single vortex inside the annulus. The energy spectrum for a rotating annular condensate with a vortex at the center also reveals the distinct connection of the Tkachenko modes of a vortex lattice to its inner surface excitations.

Numerical Study of Vortex Interactions in Bose-Einstein Condensation

Yanzhi Zhang

The dynamics and interaction of quantized vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are investigated by using the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with/without an angular momentum rotation term. If all vortices have the same winding number, they would rotate around the trap center but never collide. In contrast, if the winding numbers are different, their interaction highly depends on the initial distance between vortex centers. The analytical results are presented to describe the dynamics of the vortex centers when β=0. While if β≠0, there is no analytical result but some conclusive numerical findings are provided for the further understanding of vortex interaction in BECs. Finally, the dynamic laws describing the relation of vortex interaction in nonrotating and rotating BECs are presented.

Vortex stability in interacting Bose-Einstein condensates

Ajay Srinivasan, Aaron Wirthwein, Stephan Haas

We study the stability of vortices in a binary system of Bose-Einstein condensat es, with their wave functions modeled by a set of coupled, time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Beginning with an effective two-dimensional system, we identify miscible and immiscible regimes characterized by the inter- and intra-atomic interactions and the initial configuration of the system. We then consider a binary system of Bose-Einstein condensates placed in a rotating harmonic trap and study the single united vortex state in this system. We derive an approximate form for the energy of a single united vortex in the binary system and the critical angular velocity for the global stability of a vortex at the center of the trap. We also compute the metastability onset angular velocity for the local stability of a vortex at the center of the trap. Numerical solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equations support these expressions. These rotational results inform us of a novel bimodal formation within the miscible regime of the binary condensate system. We thus demonstrate the nontrivial aspects of vortex stability in interacting binary Bose-Einstein condensates as a result of their nonlinear interactions.

Dynamics of vortices in weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates

Alexander Klein, Dieter Jaksch, Yanzhi Zhang +1 more

We study the dynamics of vortices in ideal and weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates using a Ritz minimization method to solve the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. For different initial vortex configurations we calculate the trajectories of the vortices. We find conditions under which a vortex-antivortex pair annihilates and is created again. For the case of three vortices we show that at certain times two additional vortices may be created, which move through the condensate and annihilate each other again. For a noninteracting condensate this process is periodic, whereas for small interactions the essential features persist, but the periodicity is lost. The results are compared to exact numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation confirming our analytical findings.

Velocity of vortices in inhomogeneous Bose–Einstein condensates

Halvor Møll Nilsen, Gordon Baym, C. J. Pethick

We derive, from the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, an exact expression for the velocity of any vortex in a Bose-Einstein condensate, in equilibrium or not, in terms of the condensate wave function at the center of the vortex. In general, the vortex velocity is a sum of the local superfluid velocity, plus a correction related to the density gradient near the vortex. A consequence is that in rapidly rotating, harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates, unlike in the usual situation in slowly rotating condensates and in hydrodynamics, vortices do not move with the local fluid velocity. We indicate how Kelvin's conservation of circulation theorem is compatible with the velocity of the vortex center being different from the local fluid velocity. Finally, we derive an exact wave function for a single vortex near the rotation axis in a weakly interacting system, from which we derive the vortex precession rate.
