Abstract

We discuss the information entropy for a general open pointer-based simultaneous measurement and show how it is bound from below. This entropic uncertainty bound is a direct consequence of the structure of the entropy and can be obtained from the formal solution of the measurement dynamics. Furthermore, the structural properties of the entropy allow us to give an intuitive interpretation of the noisy influence of the pointers and the environmental heat bath on the measurement results.

Entropic uncertainty relation for pointer-based simultaneous measurements of conjugate observables

Raoul Heese, Matthias Freyberger

We present a family of entropic uncertainty relations for pointer-based simultaneous measurements of conjugate observables. The lower bounds of these relations explicitly incorporate the influence of the measurement apparatus. We achieve this by using a mathematical theorem which states that the information entropy of convoluted probability distributions is bound from below. As a consequence of these results we can straightforwardly show that appropriately squeezed states are minimal entropy states for simultaneous measurements.

Pointer-based simultaneous measurements of conjugate observables in a thermal environment

Raoul Heese, Matthias Freyberger

We combine traditional pointer-based simultaneous measurements of conjugate observables with the concept of quantum Brownian motion of multipartite systems to phenomenologically model simultaneous measurements of conjugate observables in a thermal environment. This approach provides us with a formal solution of the complete measurement dynamics for quadratic Hamiltonians and we can therefore discuss the measurement uncertainty and optimal measurement times. As a main result, we obtain a lower bound for the uncertainty of a noisy measurement, which is an extension of a previously known uncertainty relation and in which the squeezing of the system state to be measured plays an important role. This also allows us to classify minimal uncertainty states in more detail.

Characterization of the measurement uncertainty dynamics in an open system

Xi-Hao Fang, Fei Ming, Dong Wang

Uncertainty principle plays a crucial role in quantum mechanics, because it captures the essence of the inevitable randomness associated with the outcomes of two incompatible quantum measurements. Information entropy can perfectly describe this type of randomness in information theory, because entropy can measure the degree of chaos in a given quantum system. However, the quantum-assisted uncertainty of entropy eventually inflate inevitably as the quantum correlations of the system are progressively corrupted by noise from the surrounding environment. In this paper, we investigate the dynamical features of the von Neumann entropic uncertainty in the presence of quantum memory, exploring the time evolution of entropic uncertainty suffer noise from the surrounding. Noteworthily, how the environmental noises affect the uncertainty of entropy is revealed, and specifically we verify how two types of noise environments, AD channel and BPF channel, influence the uncertainty. Meanwhile, we put forward some effective operation strategies to reduce the magnitude of the measurement uncertainty under the open systems. Furthermore, we explore the applications of the uncertainty relation investigated on entanglement witness and quantum channel capacity. Therefore , in open quantum correlation systems, our investigations could provide an insight into quantum measurement estimation

Improved bounds on entropic uncertainty relations

Julio I. de Vicente, Jorge Sánchez-Ruiz

Entropic uncertainty relations place nontrivial lower bounds to the sum of Shannon information entropies for noncommuting observables. Here we obtain a lower bound on the entropy sum for general pairs of observables in finite-dimensional Hilbert space, which improves on the best bound known to date [H. Maassen and J. B. M. Uffink, Phys. Rev. Lett. 60, 1103 (1988)] for a wide class of observables. This result follows from another formulation of the uncertainty principle, the Landau-Pollak inequality, whose relationship to the Maassen-Uffink entropic uncertainty relation is discussed.

Entropic uncertainty relations for successive measurements of canonically conjugate observables

Alexey E. Rastegin

Uncertainties in successive measurements of general canonically conjugate variables are examined. Such operators are approached within a limiting procedure of the Pegg–Barnett type. Dealing with unbounded observables, we should take into account a finiteness of detector resolution. An appropriate reformulation of two scenarios of successive measurements is proposed and motivated. Uncertainties are characterized by means of generalized entropies of both the Rényi and Tsallis types. The Rényi and Tsallis formulations of uncertainty relations are obtained for both the scenarios of successive measurements of canonically conjugate operators. Entropic uncertainty relations for the cases of position and momentum are separately discussed. image

Controlling entropic uncertainty bound through memory effects

Göktuğ Karpat, Jyrki Piilo, Sabrina Maniscalco

One of the defining traits of quantum mechanics is the uncertainty principle which was originally expressed in terms of the standard deviation of two observables. Alternatively, it can be formulated using entropic measures, and can also be generalized by including a memory particle that is entangled with the particle to be measured. Here we consider a realistic scenario where the memory particle is an open system interacting with an external environment. Through the relation of conditional entropy to mutual information, we provide a link between memory effects and the rate of change of conditional entropy controlling the lower bound of the entropic uncertainty relation. Our treatment reveals that the memory effects stemming from the non-Markovian nature of quantum dynamical maps directly control the lower bound of the entropic uncertainty relation in a general way, independently of the specific type of interaction between the memory particle and its environment.
