Doping asymmetry and striping in a three-orbital CuO2 Hubbard model

Abstract

While both the hole and electron doped cuprates can exhibit ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$-wave superconductivity, the local distribution of the doped carriers is known to be significantly different with the doped holes going primarily on the O sites while the doped electrons go on the Cu sites. Here we report the results of density-matrix-renormalization-group calculations for a three-orbital model of a ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ lattice. In addition to the asymmetric dependence of the intra-unit-cell occupation of the Cu and O for hole and electron doping, we find important differences in the longer range spin and charge correlations. As expected, the pair-field response has a ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$-like structure for both the hole and electron doped systems.

Antiferromagnetic, charge-transfer, and pairing correlations in the three-band Hubbard model

Richard T. Scalettar, Douglas J. Scalapino, Robert L. Sugar +1 more

The ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ sheets common to the superconducting cuprates are believed to be characterized by a charge-transfer gap in their insulating antiferromagnetic state. The three-band Hubbard model with an on-site Cu Coulomb interaction ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{d}}$, which is large compared to the difference in energy \ensuremath{\varepsilon} between the O and Cu sites, provides a basic model for such a system. We have carried out Lanczos and Monte Carlo studies of a ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ lattice described by a three-band Hubbard model. For ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{d}}$ large compared with \ensuremath{\varepsilon}, and \ensuremath{\varepsilon} comparable to or larger than the bandwidth of the lower hole band, we find strong antiferromagnetic correlations and evidence for a charge-transfer gap at a filling of one hole per Cu. The antiferromagnetic correlations decrease with either hole or electron doping, and we see that the additional holes go primarily on the O sites, while additional electrons go onto the Cu sites. For large values of the intersite Cu-O Coulomb interaction V, the hole-doped system exhibits a charge-transfer instability. As V is reduced, this is reflected as a peak in the charge-transfer susceptibility near \ensuremath{\varepsilon}+2V\ensuremath{\approxeq}${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{d}}$, which we find is washed out by the strong Cu-O hybridization at realistic values of V. Attractive pairing interactions are found in both the d-wave and extended ${\mathit{s}}^{\mathrm{*}}$-wave channels near the antiferromagnetic boundary.

Doping asymmetry in the three-band Hamiltonian for cuprate ladders: Failure of the standard model of superconductivity in cuprates

Jeong-Pil Song, S. Mazumdar, Rudolf Torsten Clay

The relevance of the single-band two-dimensional Hubbard model to superconductivity in the doped cuprates has recently been questioned, based on density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations that found superconductivity over an unrealistically broad doping region upon electron-doping, yet a complete absence of superconductivity for hole-doping. We report very similar results from DMRG calculations on a ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ two-leg ladder within the parent three-band correlated-electron Hamiltonian. The strong asymmetry found in our calculations are in contradiction to the deep and profound symmetry in the experimental phase diagrams of electron- and hole-doped cuprate superconductors, as seen from the occurrence of quantum critical points within the superconducting domes in both cases that are characterized by Fermi surface reconstruction, large jumps in carrier density, and strange metal behavior.

Pairing correlations in electron-doped cuprates

Armando A. Aligia, Liliana Arrachea

We calculate on-site s, extended s and ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ pairing correlation functions in a generalized Hubbard model for the cuprates, for parameters appropriate for electron-doped systems, using numerical diagonalization of a $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4$ cluster. We find indications of d-wave superconductivity for small doping $(\ensuremath{\sim}0.1$ electrons per unit cell) and s-wave superconductivity for overdoped systems $(\ensuremath{\sim}0.5$ electrons per unit cell) or small U. The magnitude of the pairing correlation functions and the vertex contributions to them are in general much smaller than in the hole-doped case. We also present results for the spin-structure factor.

Differences between hole and electron doping of a two-leg CuO ladder

Satoshi Nishimoto, Eric Jeckelmann, Douglas J. Scalapino

Here we report results of a density-matrix-renormalization-group calculation of the charge, spin, and pairing properties of a two-leg CuO Hubbard ladder. The outer oxygen atoms as well as the rung and leg oxygen atoms are included along with near-neighbor and oxygen-hopping matrix elements. This model allows us to study the effects of hole and electron doping on a system that is a charge-transfer insulator at a filling of one hole per Cu and exhibits power law, d-wave-like pairing correlations when doped. In particular, we focus on the differences between doping with holes and with electrons.

Pairing, charge, and spin correlations in the three-band Hubbard model

Zhongbing Huang, Hua Lin, James E. Gubernatis

Using the constrained path Monte Carlo method, we simulated the two-dimensional, three-band Hubbard model to study pairing, charge, and spin correlations as a function of electron and hole doping and the Coulomb repulsion ${V}_{\mathrm{pd}}$ between charges on neighboring Cu and O lattice sites. As a function of distance, both the ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$-wave and extended s-wave pairing correlations decayed quickly. In the charge-transfer regime, increasing ${V}_{\mathrm{pd}}$ decreased the long-range part of the correlation functions in both channels, while in the mixed-valent regime, it increased the long-range part of the s-wave behavior but decreased that of the d-wave behavior. Still the d-wave behavior dominated. At a given doping, increasing ${V}_{\mathrm{pd}}$ increased the spin-spin correlations in the charge-transfer regime but decreased them in the mixed-valent regime. Also, increasing ${V}_{\mathrm{pd}}$ suppressed the charge-charge correlations between neighboring Cu and O sites. Electron and hole doping away from half-filling was accompanied by a rapid suppression of antiferromagnetic correlations. Our results suggest that adding a repulsive ${V}_{\mathrm{pd}}$ to the model does not enhance its tendency toward superconductivity even though the behavior of the spin structure factor is consistent with the properties of some high-temperature superconducting materials.

Superconducting stripes in the hole-doped three-band Hubbard model

Boris Ponsioen, Sangwoo S. Chung, Philippe Corboz

We study the ground state properties of the hole-doped three-band Hubbard (Emery) model, describing the copper-oxygen planes of the cuprates, using large-scale two-dimensional tensor network calculations. Our simulations reveal a period 4 stripe state with spin and weak charge order over an extended doping range beyond $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\sim}0.12$ and stripes with larger periods at smaller doping. The period 4 stripe exhibits coexisting $d$-wave superconductivity in the doping range $0.15\ensuremath{\lesssim}\ensuremath{\delta}<0.25$, while at smaller doping around $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\sim}1/8$ we find a strong competition between superconducting and nonsuperconducting stripes, including also pair density-wave states with an alternating sign structure on neighboring stripes, suggesting that the fate of superconductivity around 1/8 doping may be sensitive on the model parameters.
