A limit law of the return probability for a quantum walk on a hexagonal lattice

Abstract

A return probability of random walks is one of the interesting subjects. As it is well known, the return probability strongly depends on the structure of the space where the random walker moves. On the other hand, the return probability of quantum walks, which are quantum models corresponding to random walks, has also been investigated to some extend lately. In this paper, we take care of a discrete-time three-state quantum walk on a hexagonal lattice from the view point of mathematics. The mathematical result shows a limit of the return probability when the walker starts off at the origin. The result of the limit tells us about a possibility of localization at the position and a dependence of localization on the initial state.

Limit theorems of a 3-state quantum walk and its application for discrete uniform measures

Takuya Machida

We present two long-time limit theorems of a 3-state quantum walk on the line when the walker starts from the origin. One is a limit measure which is obtained from the probability distribution of the walk at a long-time limit, and the other is a convergence in distribution for the walker’s position in a rescaled space by time. In addition, as an application of the walk, we obtain discrete uniform limit measures from the 3-state walk with a delocalized initial state.

Localization and limit laws of a three-state alternate quantum walk on a two-dimensional lattice

Takuya Machida, C. M. Chandrashekar

A two-dimensional discrete-time quantum walk (DTQW) can be realized by alternating a two-state DTQW in one spatial dimension followed by an evolution in the other dimension. This was shown to reproduce a probability distribution for a certain configuration of a four-state DTQW on a two-dimensional lattice. In this work we present a three-state alternate DTQW with a parametrized coin-flip operator and show that it can produce localization that is also observed for a certain other configuration of the four-state DTQW and nonreproducible using the two-state alternate DTQW. We will present two limit theorems for the three-state alternate DTQW. One of the limit theorems describes a long-time limit of a return probability, and the other presents a convergence in distribution for the position of the walker on a rescaled space by time. We find that the spatial entanglement generated by the three-state alternate DTQW is higher than that by the four-state DTQW. Using all our results, we outline the relevance of these walks in three-level physical systems.

Return Probability of the Open Quantum Random Walk with Time-Dependence

Clement Boateng Ampadu

We study the open quantum random walk (OQRW) with time-dependence on the one-dimensional lattice space and obtain the associated limit distribution. As an application we study the return probability of the OQRW. We also ask, "What is the average time for the return probability of the OQRW?"

Localization of quantum walks on a deterministic recursive tree

X. P. Xu

Localization of quantum walks can be characterized by the return probability, i.e., the probability for the walker returning to its original site. In this paper, we consider localization of continuous-time quantum walks in terms of return probability on a deterministic recursive tree, which is generated by adding one node and connecting it to each node of the existing tree recursively. We obtain an approximate form for the return probability using the complete eigenvalues and eigenstates of Laplace matrix of the structure. It is found that the return probability depends on the initial node of the excitation. When the walk starts at the central nodes, the return probability converges to a constant value even in the limit of infinite system, in contrast to an exponential decay of the return probability if the walk starts at the outlying nodes. We also observe a bipartite structure for the distribution of return probability, and provide theoretical interpretation for all our findings. Our results suggest that quantum walks display significant localization and well-bedded structure of return probability on heterogeneous trees.

Localization in quantum walks on a honeycomb network

Changyuan Lyu, Luyan Yu, Shengjun Wu

We systematically study the localization effect in discrete-time quantum walks on a honeycomb network and establish the mathematical framework. We focus on the Grover walk first and rigorously derive the limit form of the walker's state, showing it has a certain probability to be localized at the starting position. The relationship between localization and the initial coin state is concisely represented by a linear map. We also define and calculate the average probability of localization by generating random initial states. Further, coin operators varying with positions are considered and the sufficient condition for localization is discussed. We also similarly analyze another four-state Grover walk. Theoretical predictions are all in accord with numerical simulation results. Finally, our results are compared with previous works to demonstrate the unusual trapping effect of quantum walks on a honeycomb network, as well as the advantages of our method.

Limit distributions in a quantum walk and quantum probability theory

Takuya Machida

Since a limit distribution of a discrete-time quantum walk on the line was derived in 2002, a lot of limit theorems for quantum walks with a localized initial state have been reported. On the other hand, in quantum probability theory, there are four notions of independence (free, monotone, commuting, and boolean independence) and quantum central limit theorems associated to each independence have been investigated. The relation between quantum walks and quantum probability theory is still unknown. As random walks are fundamental models in the Kolmogorov probability theory, can the quantum walks play an important role in quantum probability theory? To discuss this problem, we focus on a discrete-time 2-state quantum walk with a non-localized initial state and present a limit theorem. By using our limit theorem, we generate probability laws in the quantum central limit theorems from the quantum walk.
