Abstract

We study a Bose–Fermi mixture within the framework of the mean-field theory, including three possible regimes for the fermionic species: fully polarized, BCS, and unitarity. Starting from the 3D description and using the variational approximation (VA), we derive one-dimensional and two-dimensional systems of equations, under the corresponding confining potentials. This method produces a pair of nonlinear Schrödinger equations coupled to algebraic equations for the transverse widths of the confined state. The equations incorporate interactions between atoms of the same species and between the species, assuming that the latter can be manipulated by means of the Feshbach resonance. As an application, we explore spatial density correlations in the ground state (GS) between the species, concluding that they strongly depend on the sign and strength of the inter-species interaction. Also studied are the dynamics of the mixture in a vicinity of the GS and the corresponding spatiotemporal inter-species correlation. The correlations are strongly affected by the fermionic component, featuring the greatest variation in the unitary regime. Results produced by the VA are verified by comparison with full numerical solutions.

Starting from the 3D description and using the variational approximation (VA), we derive 1D and 2D systems of equations, under the corresponding confining potentials. The equations incorporate interactions between atoms of the same species and between the species, assuming that the latter can be manipulated by means of the Feshbach resonance (FR). Interaction-modulated tunneling dynamics of a mixture of Bose-Fermi superfluid

Hong-Ping Xu, Zhen-Zhen He, Zi-Fa Yu +1 more

In this paper, we study the interaction-modulated tunneling dynamics of a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, where a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with weak repulsive interaction is confined in a symmetric deep double-well potential and an equally populated two-component Fermi gas in a harmonic potential symmetrically is positioned in the center of the double-well potential. The tunneling between the two wells is modulated by fermions trapped in a harmonic potential. When the temperature is adequately low and the bosonic particle number is adequately large, we can employ the mean-field theory to describe the evolution of the BEC in the double-well potential through the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. For the Fermi gas in the harmonic potential trap, we consider the case where the inter-fermion interaction is tuned on the deep Bose-Einstein condensate of the inter-fermion Feshbach resonance, where two fermions of spin-up and spin-down form a two-body bound state. Within the regime, the Fermi gas is well described by a condensate of these fermionic dimers, and hence can be simulated as well by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation of dimers. The inter-species interactions couple the dynamics of the two species, which results in interesting features in the tunneling oscillations. The dynamic equations of the BEC in the double-well potential is described by a two-mode approximation. Coupling it with time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation of the harmonically potential trapped molecular BEC, we numerically investigate the dynamical evolution of the Boson-Fermi hybrid system under different initial conditions. It is found that the interaction among fermions in a harmonic potential leads to strong non-linearity in the oscillations of the bosons in the double-well potential and enriches the tunneling dynamics of the bosons. Especially, it strengthens macroscopic quantum self-trapping. And the macroscopic quantum self-trapping can be expressed in three forms: the phase tends to be negative and monotonically decreases with time, the phase evolves with time, and the phase tends to be positive and increases monotonically with time. This means that it is possible the tunneling dynamics of the BEC in double-well potential is adjustable. Our results can be verified experimentally in a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture by varying different interaction parameters via Feshbach resonance and confinement-induced resonance.

Strongly Interacting Fermi Gases of Atoms Confined in a Harmonic Trap

Yeong E. Kim, Alexander L. Zubarev

Dynamics of strongly interacting Fermi gases, consisting of a 50-50 mixture of two different fermionic species, is investigated. For the equation of state we consider a Padé [2/2] approximations, which gives the weak-coupling perturbative formula (up to 4th order) in the low density regime, the unitary-limit Monte Carlo result in the high density regime, and reproduces the 4-fermion prediction for dimer-dimer scattering length in the BEC region. We use a time-dependent LDA to derive various properties of the Fermi gas under a harmonic confinement and compare them with the data of very recent experiments of 6Li atoms across a Feshbach resonance.

Density-functional theory for one-dimensional harmonically trapped Bose-Fermi mixture

Hongmei Wang, Yajiang Hao, Yunbo Zhang

We present a density-functional theory for the one-dimensional harmonically trapped Bose-Fermi mixture with repulsive contact interactions. The ground-state density distribution of each component is obtained by solving the Kohn-Sham equations numerically based on the local density approximation and the exact solution for the homogeneous system given by Bethe ansatz method. It is shown that for sufficiently strong interaction, a considerable amount of fermions are repelled out of the central region of the trap, exhibiting partial phase separation of Bose and Fermi components. Oscillations emerge in the Bose density curves, reflecting the strong correlation with fermions. For infinitely strong interaction, the ground-state energy of the mixture and the total density are consistent with the scenario that all atoms in the mixture are fully fermionized.

Density-functional theory of two-component Bose gases in one-dimensional harmonic traps

Yajiang Hao, Shu Chen

We investigate the ground-state properties of two-component Bose gases confined in one-dimensional harmonic traps in the scheme of density-functional theory. The density-functional calculations employ a Bethe-ansatz-based local-density approximation for the correlation energy, which accounts for the correlation effect properly from the weakly interacting regime to the strongly interacting regime. For the binary Bose mixture with spin-independent interaction, the homogeneous reference system is exactly solvable by the Bethe-ansatz method. Within the local-density approximation, we determine the density distribution of each component and study its evolution from Bose distributions to Fermi-like distribution with the increase in interaction. For the binary mixture of Tonks-Girardeau gases with a tunable interspecies repulsion, with a generalized Bose-Fermi transformation we show that the Bose mixture can be mapped into a two-component Fermi gas, which corresponds to exact soluble Yang-Gaudin model for the homogeneous system. Based on the ground-state energy function of the Yang-Gaudin model, the ground-state density distributions are calculated for various interspecies interactions. It is shown that with the increase in interspecies interaction, the system exhibits composite-fermionization crossover.

The Variational Reduction for Low-Dimensional Fermi Gases and Bose–Fermi Mixtures: A Brief Review

Pablo Díaz, D. Laroze, Boris A. Malomed

We present a summary of some recent theoretical results for matter-wave patterns in Fermi and Bose–Fermi degenerate gases, obtained in the framework of the quasi-mean-field approximation. We perform a dimensional reduction from the three-dimensional (3D) equations of motion to 2D and 1D effective equations. In both cases, comparison of the low-dimensional reductions to the full model is performed, showing very good agreement for ground-state solutions. Some complex dynamical regimes are reported too for the corresponding 1D systems.
